So guys I wanted to start a thread on people's favorite villains
The basic rules would be why that particular villain is your favorite and other reasons why that villain(s) is(are) your particular favorite My particular favorites are
#1 Deathstroke
One of my all time favorite villains because even as a villain he has the similar traits to batman where he carefully plans his every moves before making them. Making him a tactical genius when it comes to fighting any heroes
#2 Combine Soldiers
Yes, strange but my second favorite are the combine soldiers from the half life series.. not only because they look cool with their masks, but with the very fact that they have control of every aspect of human life sounds good
After my recent readings. I'am starting to realy like Matthew Sobol. Book called Daemon, its nothing spectacular sofar but the plotline and technobabble keeps my brain happy =) Insane genius, likes to consider alot of possibilites and the various outcome and plan for them. With a devilish cough from beyond the grave.
On April 12 2011 01:31 phyren wrote: Magneto.
He has awesome magnetic powers (which E&M shows means awesome electrical powers), can fly, can shield himself, and is a total badass.
Oh yes. That one is a realy nice, in particular once they figured out magnetic powers meant more then metal and more like atomic bindings and like ^^
Guy's a fucking Nazi werewolf. Never says a word. Totally silent, Grade A, Badass, Killing Machine.
Morrowind Daedroth:
If you didn't have poison protection or retarded amounts of health, these guys wrecked your shit like no one's business. On top of that, Morrowind was just a better game than that sack of shit Oblivion.
who other then apocalypse everybody loves megatron (should be a tv show) and bowser ofc. (having the most elaborate plans all the time and failing hard)
16 is not a villain. I mean he is for a bit, but I think most people would think of him as a hero.
When I first saw him in the cell saga he was a villain, and I thought he was awesome, reminded me of The Terminator, so yeah he's still my favourite villain even if his death (really could have been anyone) lead to the world being saved :/
To be honest im one of those guys that has fell for the story that the good guy should always win so I always side with the good guy. But if i were to pick a villain it would have to be darth maul.
Talk about bad ass and his double sided red lightsaber makes him even cooler.
No special powers, no reasons, no long term plans, just pure desire to see the world burn. He is, IMO, the purest of villains. Because Blade Runner is awesome. And he has some of the best lines.
I dont think any character in a movie has stirred up as many hateful emotions as Nurse Ratched did for me. She may not be the most charismatic or dynamic villain but she is pure evil.
I'd say Light is to be considered a villain. While Lelouch did some questionable things, he always had the same goal in mind - Make a better world. Light did everything for his own benefit.
Holy crap so many good ones in this thread. My favorites: The joker; (as someone already pointed out, he just wants to see the world burn -- crazy evil) Johan Liebert (from the monster series. If you haven't seen it check it out, especially if you like shows like Dexter) Yagami Light (everything he does is just so calculated and awesome, until the end, of course, where he gets caught and goes batshit crazy haha)
On April 12 2011 01:48 Haemonculus wrote: Professor Fate from the Great Race! Classic scheming badguy, with awesome theme song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Rvtf1qlKrc
Amazing, someone else who has seen The Great Race! Awesome classic movie.
Moving on, my favorite villain is the Joker in the Dark Knight. I just love Chaotic Evil and Good. I actually feel like Heath Ledger's performance reminded me of Jack Lemon, too (played Professor fate).
It ruled Spira for a thousand years with an iron fist, It stalked you through your journey toying with you and watching you grow It challenged your power and showed you how far you had to go If it was serious it could have obliterated any hopes you had like it showed in its attacks upon Kilika and the beach where the Machina awaited
and by the same reasoning best Hero:
cos he controlled the big hulk of kickass destruction for ten years in an attempt to rid Spira of its existence.
Naraku- Inuyasha Just the way he manipulates everyone thoughout the whole series and makes everyone turn on each other shows a lot more evil than any other villain
Raistlin Majere. Anyone who was ever picked on in school can relate to this guy. In the stories, despite being a villain, you find yourself rooting for him.
"I am the Dragon. And you call me insane. You are privy to a great becoming, but you recognize nothing. To me, you are a slug in the sun. You are an ant in the afterbirth. It is your nature to do one thing correctly. Before me, you rightly tremble. But, fear is not what you owe me. You owe me awe."
"They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!"

Look at you, hacker. A pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?
He's my favorite villain for a number of reasons, but mostly because of his great hairstyle and the fact that he does everything using his mind rather than his muscles.
Garl Vinland from Demon's Souls, he's not a villian all by himself but he basically promised his loved Astraea that he'd follow her to whichever end, when she eventually became a demon and started to defile the marshlands instead of helping the inhabitants he just stuck to his promise. The moody music and the awesome dialogue makes this a really melancholic fight after you have traversed the god forsaken swamp and all in all it is a really tragic story.
Some features: - Magical and technical supremacy - Badass suit - Owns his own fucking country
* Has his own money * Plans to build a palace shaped AS A SKULL * The mouse pointers in the computers are also SKULLS * Zangief as henchman * Has a badass countdown timer OF DOOM * Is the only good thing in a seriously crappy movie * "For you, the day M. Bison graced your small village was the most important day of your life. For me, it was Tuesday." * Painted himself as a clown to show his emotional depth:
"A mad cosmic tyrant bent on slaying half of all sentiences existing then in Marvel's multiverse in order to appease the Marvel Universe's actual (and more powerful) embodied personification of Death in an attempt to win its love."

We would be remiss to forget the villain from the greatest western ever made. Lee Van Cleef, as Angeleyes in the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, is pretty much the coldest villain ever.
Well, maybe the good, the bad, and the ugly is second best western ever made. Personally, I LOVE For a Few Dollars More, and Indio is hella boss.
When I was a kid I was blown away by Brolli, not by how evil he was but by how powerful and awesome he was. An impenetrable force, who despite being a huge villain I found myself cheering for him over goku.
I think one of the more recent villains that I have really loved comes from Naruto. I loved the way they introduced Pain into the series, you knew nothing about him and it was a mystery they had to find out. And when you first see the six paths of pain, it was definitely a WTF moment. He was evil but also had good intentions. When you learned his back story you couldn't help but feel for him.
This one is my favorite villain of all time, and his awesomeness is pretty self explanatory. He is a physics genious who can can control all forms of magnetism. God among mutants <3
THIS! I did sweat blood during the scenes where you can hear him drag his sword. Also the only video game character that was not altered in the movie ... gonna watch it now.
/edit: On second thought ... let's not watch it now ... it's already dark ...
Rory Fucking Breaker from Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
"If you hold back anything, I'll kill ya. If you bend the truth or I think you're bending the truth, I'll kill ya. If you forget anything, I'll kill ya. In fact, you're gonna have to work very hard to stay alive, Nick. Now, do you understand everything I've just said? 'Cause if you don't, I'll kill ya! Now, Mr Bubble and Squeak, you may enlighten me."
I dont think any character in a movie has stirred up as many hateful emotions as Nurse Ratched did for me. She may not be the most charismatic or dynamic villain but she is pure evil.
100% agree here. No dramatic burning, killing, maiming etc. Just pure evil. Compared to all the others mentioned in this thread, she is also the most believable, just an ordinary human, but evil.
"The Big Nurse tends to get real put out if something keeps her outfit from running like a smooth, accurate, precision-made machine. The slightest thing messy or out of kilter or in the way ties her into a little white knot of tight-smiled fury. She walks around with that same doll smile crimpled between her chin and her nose and that same calm whir coming from her eyes, but down inside of her she's tense as steel. I know, I can feel it. And she don't relax a hair until she gets the nuisance attended to - what she calls 'adjusted to surroundings.'"
"What worries me, Billy," she said - I could hear the change in her voice - "is how your mother is going to take this."
"Do you see any Teletubbies in here? Do you see a slender plastic tag clipped to my shirt with my name printed on it? Do you see a little Asian child with a blank expression on his face sitting outside on a mechanical helicopter that shakes when you put quarters in it? No? Well, that's what you see at a toy store. And you must think you're in a toy store, because you're here shopping for an infant named Jeb. One of us has made a gross error, and wasted the other person's valuable time."
"Now that we know who you are... I know who I am. I'm not a mistake! It all makes sense. In a comic, you know how you can tell who the arch-villain's going to be? He's the exact opposite of the hero, and most time's they're friends, like you and me. I should've known way back when. You know why, David? Because of the kids. They called me Mr. Glass. "
"I am going to show you why we insist on such precautions. On the evening of July 8th, 1981, he complained of chest pains and was taken to the dispensary. His mouthpiece and restraints were removed for an EKG. When the nurse leaned over him, he did this to her" - pulls out photo - "The doctors managed to reset her jaw more or less. Saved one of her eyes. His pulse never got above 85, even when he ate her tongue."
"A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti."
"Well, Clarice - have the lambs stopped screaming?"
Classic Magneto (not the god-awful pansy Marvel's written him as for the past 2-3 years). His story is really compelling, he's extremely powerful, and he's kind of got that "I know you're the bad guy but I can sympathize with you" thing going on. 'Fatal Attractions' storyarc ftw.
Some people just assume that because you like a particular portrayal of a villain done by a black guy that it means you don't like black guys. I guess they are too racist to consider that there are black guys out there who can portray really good villains, which is a credit to their acting talent.
There's some good choices here; Venom, Sephiroth, Joker, Darth Vader. If I were to choose one that I don't believe that has been posted yet.. I would say either Megamind or Mojo Jojo :D
I think it's more racist to assume we're being racist by posting pictures of black dudes in this thread even though they are in fact, villains, in the best TV show of all time. And Bell is 10x better of a villain than davis or marlow IMO :D Omar is more of a... weird half villain half hero to me. Shit Levy is more of a villain than Omar I think.
most of my favs have been posted already (darth maul, vegeta, marlo, omar, venom) and more, so I'll post one I haven't seen in the thread yet, great actor and great character in the movie aswell.
is pretty amazing. Among the one already mentionned Roy from Blader runner and Kafka are probably my favorite. Even though Kafka might be too evil to be the best villain. Oh yeah Lee Van Cleef in the good the bad and the ugly and Indio were amazing !
"I hope he's tall and handsome and just a little bit fat and absolutely sure that he'll never be killed! 'Cause then there's me! I'LL TAPDANCE ALL OVER HIS FACE LIKE I'M GODDAMN BOJANGLES!"
"First of all, why kill it? It is arrogance to assume it is evil even before its birth. Is it not love to allow a life that yearns to be born into the world?"
He was trying to bring about the third impact to make himself God and he was willing to sacrifice his son for his own goals.
he didn't want shinji involved from the start...at least based off the series. they change it in the reboots. gendo actually wanted to be in shinjis place, hence his attempt to join adam with rei/lilith in terminal dogma, and be the vehicle for third impact. plus, he was against seeles plan of forming a human singularity, but was more open to a rebirth of humanity.
at least that's what i got out of it. who the fuck knows what's really going through hideaki annos mind on how the story really ends
While I enjoy many of the villains already posted, my absolute favorite has always been Iago from Othello. Amoral, manipulative, powerfully deceptive. He channels all of his creativity into absolutely destroying another man's life with whispers and rumor, and after all of the devastation is wrought in the final scene and he's arrested, he says, "Demand me nothing. What you know, you know. From this time forth I never will speak word."
Wesley Gibson from the Wanted comic book. For those of you who have only watched the movie know that the comic book is completely different.
Yes. The Killer is a great villain. Rictus is up there too IMO. When the movie was announced I was really excited, until I started hearing the changes that were made.
http://familyguy.wikia.com/wiki/Evil_Stewie ^- If you haven't seen the episode with Evil Stewie, I urge you to go watch it as soon as you can, and you will understand that there is no competition for this spot.
The Joker and many more above here mentioned are among my favorites, however I'd like to add 1 of the first villains I encountered WAY back when I was playing the first C&C
He was trying to bring about the third impact to make himself God and he was willing to sacrifice his son for his own goals.

Trying to destroy the world to become God, and having affairs with your leading scientist and her daughter later on, to manipulate them into helping you destroy the world, seems like a villain to me. Like you stated though, who really knows and he must be a very well developed character for there to be an issue of him being good or evil.
Professor Umbridge - Harry Potter I wanted to reach through the pages and fucking punch this pink bitch in the face... Sorry, but profanity is necessary.

Good film but that guy is pathetic... A child killer is you favourite villain ? really ? He is so weak.
Twelve pages and still no Sauron. Meh. Also Sarevok > Irenicus anyday, i blame all the noobs who only played BG2 and ToB with that fake Sarevok npc.
God Enel My fav DF power and after you find out + Show Spoiler +
He is Bat shit Crazy and his goal is to fly to the Moon
Lelouche Vi Britannia Some people may argue that in the end he was the good guy for making the world into a peaceful place. But 99.999% of the people will never know and to them he was the Tyrant Emporer Lelouche
Janemba Doesn't say a single word and can manipulate space and time and use dimensional Rips to attack you from any angle and appear where ever he wants
Brolly Bad ass Sadistic and one of my fav for his brutality
I know it's been mentioned in the thread before. But Kefka will always be my favorite villain. Actually in a way he resembles the Joker's character in the Dark Knight because of his desire to just "watch the world burn". And besides, not too many villains can actually say they successfully destroyed the world
As for who he is, he is a character from True Blood, and this epic dialogue of him sums it up.
"Ladies and gentlemen... My name is Russell Edgington, and I have been a vampire for nearly 3000 years. Now the American Vampire League wishes to perpetrate the notion that we are just like you, and I suppose in a few small ways we are. We're narcissists. We care only about getting what we want no matter what the cost, just like you...Global warming, perpetual war, toxic waste, child labor, torture, genocide... That's a small price to pay for your SUVs and your blood diamonds, your designer jeans, your absurd, garish McMansions! Futile symbols of permanence to quell your quivering, spineless souls. But no. In the end we are nothing like you. We are...immortal. Because we drink the true blood, blood that is living, organic and human. And that is the truth. The AVL wishes to conceal from you because let's face it, eating people is a tough sell these days. So they put on their friendly faces to pass their beloved VRA, but make no mistake, MINE is the true face of vampires! Why would we seek equal rights? You are not our equals. We will eat you after we eat your children."
he has been mentioned but i had to add him myself XD i wasn't a huge resident evil person i played maybe the first one at a friends house but when RE5 came out on pc on steam i got that and played it. I was in just awe of wesker how evil he was and down right powerful. His abilities seem limitless and most the time he is just playing with his victims go on youtube and look up his cut scenes and even fight in-game scenes how they make it dodge bullets is just amazing. Plus his ego/ bravado is so slick he is the perfect villain imho!
The Agents from the Matrix (first movie), just because they have a sertain logic that can't be denied. From a completely objective perspective that is.. It's hard to fight someone you know is actually right, and that they have a perfectly valid reason to pulverize you lol.
he didn't give a fuck about his second lieutenant, until he found out he loved her. But in turn became a demon god, let's his apostles devour his comrades, rape his second lieutenant and scar her for life, destroyed the protagonist spirit. Everyone is rooting for him in the comics(better deceiver than satan), even I myself can't see him as a villain. Also looks like a freaking boy band which I hate so much
Angelus/Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He was fantastically creepy and sadistic, and it was especially effective when coupled with his good alter-ego and his relationship with Buffy. The villainous Angelus storyline was just amazing in general, both from the villain himself to how much character development it drove, and it had probably the most spectacular ending to any story arc I've ever seen in a TV show.
This moment was pure and painful brilliance by Joss Whedon.
As for video games, Albert Wesker from Resident Evil is quite fantastic. Sephiroth is often mentioned, and rightfully so. Unfortunately, I feel that video game villains often lack the depth that they could, in spite of many other plot elements that video games can really excel at...
Professor Umbridge - Harry Potter I wanted to reach through the pages and fucking punch this pink bitch in the face... Sorry, but profanity is necessary.
Heath Ledger's Joker, from the Dark Knight. Very over-the-top but the thing that really intrigued me about him, aside from Ledger's awesome portrayal, is that he really seems truly INSANE in this iteration. Joker has always seemed to be a gimmicky theme-based villain in all the other media I've seen (never read any of the comics, only movies and the animated show), but he seems to really be off his rocker in this movie. A very refreshing villain, not motivated by money, power, or ideology, but instead by bat-shit crazy thoughts. pretty nifty.
Sephiroth, from FF7, for similar reasons (though he is much more cliche than Joker). He thinks Jenova is his mother (she isn't), he thinks he is a Cetra (he isn't), he thinks it's his right as a Cetra to inherit the planet and protect the promised land (it isn't) and he thinks the best way to accomplish this is to harm the planet itself (Wtf?) with the most powerful black magic spell in this story universe, Meteor. He f-in' nuts. And an epic BAMF. Seriously, as far as hardcore FF fans go, many prefer Kefka as the superior villain because of his mentality and success ( I agree he's even more insane than Seph by far), but he doesn't have Seph's cool factor. Down with this clown, Seph wins!
The correct answer is actually IdrA, you nerds. The perfect supervillain of the SC2 scene. An ideal blend of the New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, and Manchester United. A powerhouse that its fans love to love and its enemies love to hate.
Not only the best character the Star Wars universe has produced by far, but a VERY strong candidate for best video game character of all time. I would love to hear anybody argue otherwise. If you have not played Kotor 2, and have any interest at all in the star wars universe, I suggest doing so NOW. It will completely revolutionize the way you see the entire Star Wars mythology/philosophies.
Alucard is by far the greatest villian ever created in any media.
He is immortal, nearly invincible and despite fighting on the side of good, he is pure evil. To nearly kill him 3,424,867 people had to die so that Schrodinger could poison him and negate his existance, whereupon he killed them all again to bring himself back. And upon the end of the manga he reveals the only soul he didnt kill was Schrodinger, so he is now fully immortal and invulnerable.
Well since all my favorite villains have been mentioned: Johan Liebert, Hisoka and Hannibal, I'll go with my childhood most hated villian IG88 from Shadows of the empire. This nigga freaked me out.
The reason why I enjoyed the Iron Man movie so much. Jeff Bridges is quite intimidating, powerful, and just bad ass.
So totally awesome. One of the most suave villains ever. I would post my all time favorite, Hans Landa (Inglorious Basterds) but I think he is on page 3.
Edit: Props to Spike and Dark Willow. Alyson Hannigan is so awesome.
Oh and Deus Ex spoilers for this next one I think: + Show Spoiler +
Pretty sure there's a level where you're poking around some creepy cathedral or some shit and he's psyching you out for killing Navarre...I had to stop playing cause it was scaring the hell out of me.

Sarevok was sooooo much cooler than Irenicus.
I would vote Sephiroth, though.
You really think so? Coze in BG1 you don't have much scene with Sarevok, and he doesn't really seem to be that interesting, on top of that his story line is basic and we don't really know much about his life exept that he wants to take over the world , I guess he could have been much better, I mean comparing to Irenicus who was a character much more advanced I believe.

I just had to quote this one. I just read the manga chapers (all of them) and THAT guy is probably one of the EVIL persons I have ever seen in tv/comics/manga/games or whatever other thing there is.
Betraying your comrades, sacrificing them to demons to become a demon god, raping the woman that loves you in front of her beloved which is one of his best friends. Then deceiving almost the entire world that he's an angel. Damn this guy is PURE EVIL.

I just didn't like the whole mad scientist thing with Irenicus, and the whole story with the elves and his malediction and everything was pretty boring. You knew everything about him, and he didn't have any personality because he had precisely lost his soul.
Sarevok was a badass with a huge and duper cool armour and he was pretty mysterious. In the one hand, they were no bullshits about him: no malediction or any crap like that, he was just evil, and had super simple motivations and personality. In the other hand, everything you knew about him was vague, second hand, unprecise. He was so superior to you in every moment of the storyline. Plus you were meeting so many people who knew him: Tamoko, Tazok, Angelo, his mistress, but almost never him, he was invisible and everywhere at once. Nice and simple, but also mysterious and with lots of room for your imagination.
I have to say, I really prefered the storyline of BG1 than BG2. I almost always prefer the original stories, though. Warcraft 2 was amazing Warcraft 3 was awful, Brood War was fantastic, Starcraft 2 is horribad. BG1 was epic, BG2 is meh, etc etc etc.

Griffith is the ultimate villain,I wish I could find more chapters for berserk online...
some of his many names are: Randall Flagg, Walter O'dim, Rudin Filario, Raymond Fiegler, Richard Fannin, Walter Hodji, Walter Farden and Marten Broadcloak. But no name is more true than the one on this card.
cos he controlled the big hulk of kickass destruction for ten years in an attempt to rid Spira of its existence.
I don't think Jecht was opposing the protagonists throughout the game. + Show Spoiler +
They only fought at the end as the final boss.
It's quite difficult for me to categorizing him as a villain.
I didn't say Jecht was a villain, i said Sin was the villain and Jecht was the best hero because he restrained Sin from inside for ten years and helped with Sin's demise.
read my post entirely before you make a comment k ?
Hades from Hercules. Funny villain Hercules: You like making deals. Take me in Meg's place. Hades: Hmm. The son of my hated rival trapped forever in a river of death. Hercules: Going once... Hades: Is there a downside to this? Hercules: Going twice... Hades: Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay. You get her out. She goes, you stay. [Hercules dives in to save Megara] Hades: Oh, there's just one thing. You'll be dead before you can get to her. That's not a problem, is it?
Phoebus Abel from Saint Seiya. The scene where he is playing the harp for Athena is one of the few things I remember from my childhood. All he wanted to do was cleanse the Earth.

Kane, leader of the Brotherhood of NOD.
He is so baller.
YES! favorite video game villain because he was so charismatic.
- Kefka from FF6. Insane and his plans actually succeed, destroying the world and attaining godhood. His laugh is so memorable too. - Rubicant from FF4. Sometimes an honorable bad guy is pretty cool. - Ivan Drago from Rocky 4. Cheats, "I must break you.", etc. Nevermind the cold war overtones of the whole movie... - The Joker (but only the version from Dark Knight... He was pulled off as intelligent, crafty & insane as opposed to the cartoony treatment he gets everywhere else) - Hannibal Lecter. Anyone for some fava beans and a fine Chianti? - Emperor Palpatine. Played literally everyone for fools in more ways than one, consolidating everything under his reign through cunning political machinations and using people as puppets. Also, he kicked Yoda's ass. - Psycho Mantis. It's awesome how he interacted with you, the player, as opposed to the character you're playing. - Sovereign. Being the harbinger to the annihilation of the whole galaxy, mind controlling everyone, revered as a god by a race it views only as tools, etc. - Saren. I love logical & badass villains, particularly when they think they're doing good. Saren fits that to a tee. He also had one of the more unexpected boss fight resolutions at the end of the game. - Shodan. Probably partially the inspiration for Glados, but much more menacing and badass. - Arthas & Kerrigan were both great but were more or less ruined by their subsequent games... - Agrael / Raelag, although that's kind of the exact opposite growth that Darth Vader had.
The film day of the dead (1985) features the best protagonists ive seen in any movie. Im especially amoured with Captain Rhodes. Check out the vid at 1:19 one of the best scenes in the movie such a bastard lol

Koveras. You should be a fan of Sarevok too. That would really make sense.
Best Disney villain ever, hands down. Power, wits, ruthlessness, pure evil, and has the best evil laugh cackle ever. (Say hello to your precious! prince! aliiiii!!! AAHHHHHHHHHHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA)
he did some pretty cruel things until at some point in the books he reconsiders and becomes this valiant knight he ought have been before. pushing bran out of the window, murdering eddard's escort, slaying king aerys (even though the latter seemed justified)... to me he has always had that air of a bad boy and villain of sorts even though this changes as the story develops. still, he is one of the coolest assholes I know.

- mors is latin for death - morso is latin for orphan - Morso was the third character in an old finnish kids show about a donkey, a cat & this creature. Satan had to be involved when they created that monster.
It's a villain because it took the sanity of thousands of kids. It still hunts me in my sleep.
Madara is a cheesy villain and a poser. Orochimaru was so much better. Shame he was used as nothing more than a cheap measuring stick in the end.
So true. The manga became so much worse when he wasn't the big bad guy any more. He had style and Madara has none. Also the Sasuke parts are just stupid. Suddenly he can beat all the top guys.

Pfuahaha. Poor Salieri. He was a quite a decent composer, this movie just ruined him for eternity. He should sue Milos Forman in heaven.
I think this movie did better things for Salieri's legacy than for Mozarts! Fantastic movie, though I think you've got the hero/villain relationship upside down - but I guess that's one of the strengths of the movie .
Bishop Vergerus from Bergmans masterpiece Fanny Och Alexander
Princess Azula from The Last Airbender. Fell in love with this character, was sad to see how she ended. She was definitely one of the main reasons this series was amazing - too bad we will never see her in live-action T_T
Jim Lahey. Trailer Park Supervisor and recovering alcoholic (:D). Trailer Park Boys
Bob Page. Deus Ex. Perhaps not the best villain, but deserves enormous credit for setting the storyline of Deus Ex in motion.
One final guy - if Salieri is the patron saint of mediocrities, this man is the patron saint of depression!
Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood
PS. Not sure what this Madara character is from (Fucking anooying that people won't reveal where they got their villains from. Inside jokes are the best, but this is a place of sharing!) but here is the Madara that I (and most other scandinavians) know:
Shira from Blade of the Immortal, completely insane and gets his arms hacked off, but doesn't give a fuck and just whittles the stumps down to the bone and stabs people WITH HIS BONES.
"Such beauty they hold, these tears of sorrow. But are you worthy to shed such tears? The act of mourning the dead belongs to the realm of humans. The human race, fearful in its weakness, built this world in a futile attempt to elude the abyss they call mortality. Culture…civilization…all delusions created by a powerless race, and of little use, like a barren woman. But amidst all this, you continue to exist as an unfettered soul, free from the shackles of flesh and blood… A completely pure consciousness… An eternal spiral, undefiled by impurities… a fusion of fire, breath, and spirit… What can we call you…but angels? New, unadulterated psyches… But what you lack is reality. And that is what I shall provide you with…!" - Albedo, Xenosaga ep 1
Washizu from Akagi, makes for some of the most badass mahjong games in history.
Ancient Dragon Planeswalker that strives for omnipotence and omniscience at any cost. Commonly employs plans that take hundreds if not thousands of years to complete. He creates temporary constructs of himself that are more powerful than most other planeswalkers.
In Shards of Alara he instigated the five shards to declare violent war on one another so that he could absorb all the energy gathering in the center of the five shards. And unlike many villains, he actually succeeds.
If i had to choose from the last 23 pages who the greatest villan was, i'd choose her as well. Two people posted about Hans Landa from Inglourious bastards. He sucked.
I would say my favorite villains are: and I'm so disappointed that cartman wasn't mentioned yet.

Not only the best character the Star Wars universe has produced by far, but a VERY strong candidate for best video game character of all time. I would love to hear anybody argue otherwise. It will completely revolutionize the way you see the entire Star Wars mythology/philosophies.
I did read most of Star war's lose regarding the Old republic, but I did not find Traya that awesome. My favourite character would definitely be Revan, even though he (in the Kanon) ends up being good. Traya was just manipulating behind the scenes but Revan was way more badass

It is the first concept drawing of the Villain for Episode I. Lucas asked the artist to draw his worst nightmare. And thats the result. I was always in love with this concept art called Sith Witch.
Doctor Robotnik from the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon one of the best villains i remember from back when i was still young, was suprisingly dark for a sonic storyline and one of the key points was he had already won and "Robotropolis" was the main stage for the series. I truly disspeared when in the later games and cartoons they turned him into "Dr.Eggman", and still to this day i remain hopeful they will return him to his former glory.
The man on the left - Neil McCauley. Not just because Heat is a badass movie, but because he is so human in his wrongdoings that you're rooting for him as often as you are against him.
I always liked the ones who you could understand. Evil for the sake of being evil always pissed me off - 'I'm evil, because it's fun!!1!!111!!' Kinda Earthworm Jim/Evil Jim level of cheesiness. That was a problem I always had with that Leso Varen from the Riftwar series. Still, the most fun one like this has to be: Mr Dalton in Hot Fuzz. Every word he said had a moustache twirl in the tone, somehow.
Irenicus was awesome, as some have menioned, but why hasen't anyone mentioned Cersei Lannister? Far more evil than Jaime ever was - in the beginning Jaime was little more than an extension of her will, now he's much more interesting since he realised he actually has something he can use between his ears. Everything you love to hate.
Two of my favourites which might be difficult to find pictures for - Ulric, Khan of the Nadir in David Gemmell's Legend and Mance Rayder from the Song of Fire and Ice. Two characters who in their own eyes are doing everything they can to protect their people, but simply from the point of view of the protagonists they are the enemy and have to be stopped. Well rounded and you can entirely sympathise with their aims - Jardir Ahmann from the Warded Man and Desert Spear is another in this vein, but not quite as cool - not the sharpest spear in the rack.
for those of you who don't know this guy, he tries to kill santa claus as an assassination contract. also when asked by the headmaster he mentions 'trying to find ways to inhume death himself'

Agent Smith(Matrix Mr.Andersson welcome back ) Leo Bonhart (from polish novel "The Witcher") Norman Stansfield (Leon the Prof.) If i remember more ill edit.
Peter Stormare, one of my fav actors with absolutely awesome portrait of Satan.
His Satan in Constantine (which I hated as whole movie) was, in my opinion, the best ever in cinema even if he had to compete with Pacino, De Niro, Nicholson, Mortensen, Max von Sydow , Gabriel Byrne, Tim Curry etc etc etc.
Chamdar (I can't remember the spelling) the angarak who spys on Garionand screws with his mind, from the Belgariad (Again can't remember the spelling) by David Eddings. Zandramas is a close second from that series, and some of the Salrimissas (spelling) the queens of Nissia.

About Deus Ex's Bob Page, he doesn't just appear on the last level. "Bring me the reaction modules!" "Interfere in any way and I will kill that young woman. I mean it." Plus the intro. A ton of his lines on the last level are very enjoyable--a madman losing his grip. Walton Simons does make me feel that if he was in charge he would eventually kill Bob Page, whereas Bob Page "needs" WS more, due to his calculating nature.

This is Arthur Mitchell from Dexter. He's played by John Lithgow, from 3rd Rock From the Sun and Lord Forquaad (I dunno how to spell that) from Shrek, which in my opinion, is one of the funniest villains ever.
Livia from "I, Claudius" played by Sean Phillips. If you don't know it: I, Cladius is 12 hours long and was made on video in the 1970s, so it look god aweful to the modern eye. However the writing is sublime. Check this fun scene with Livia being Livia at poor claw-claw-claudius:

And i was always a bigger carnage fan over the other symbiotes. The red and black are just true colors of evil and something about someone being purely insane just kinda puts the icing on the cake.

My favorite villain would be The Joker from The Dark Knight.
Ralph Fiennes as Amon Goeth in Schindler's List. Apparently on the set of that movie they had some of the Jews that survived the camp Goeth ran, in real life, and supposedly Fiennes looked so much like the real Goeth he made them shiver with fear and cry.
Sam Neill as Dr. William Weir in Event Horizon. One of my favorite movies.
Billy Mitchell is no villain! Seth Gordon portrays him as such in his horrible sensationalist "documentary", but Billy Mitchell is a true gamer, a hero and Mr. PacMan.
Ralph Fiennes as Amon Goeth in Schindler's List. Apparently on the set of that movie they had some of the Jews that survived the camp Goeth ran, in real life, and supposedly Fiennes looked so much like the real Goeth he made them shiver with fear and cry.
That's really interesting.. I'm not surprised though. He fit the role perfectly.
I probably already posted in this thread years ago, but my picks are:
john doe from se7en and michael from godfather part 2
Just played through Deus Ex again and although he seemed interesting in the beginning, he turns out to be just another goon so he's not that good of a villain.
Here's one of my favourite movie villains of all time:
Irenicus, easily the best villain from any game. And I would put Baldur's Gate easily in my top 3 games ever.
I want to play through that game again. The best way to play through is to solo as a Sorceror though. It really makes you feel like a fucking Child of Bhaal.

At the Academy rewards I still remember her beating both the T-1000 played by Robert Patrick and Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham (from Terminator 2 and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, respectively) for the best villain award.
From The Hand That Rocks The Cradle,
Rebecca De Mornay in her most famous role. I remember hating that character's guts the way I had never felt toward any character, male or female. If you don't know why, watch it! I'd hate to spoil you. Special mention should go to Kathy Bates in Misery (a close second) and Alicia Silverstone in The Crush (a not as close 3rd) for other chill-inducing whacked out female villains.

correct! Just finished season 4 of Dexter, he's my favorite villain in the series
The most dangerous weapon the Empire ever produced. More powerful than the Death Stars, Darth Vader, or the Emperor himself, Thrawn's goal was to unite the galaxy into one Empire to prepare it for the coming of an unimaginably powerful race coming from beyond the Unknown Regions.
Adrian Veidt, aka "Ozymandias" (Watchmen):
A superhero that is nothing more than the peak of human ability, his determination to save the world at any cost culminates in the most epic "Villain Reveals His Plan" speech of all time.
Scorpius (Farscape):
Another anti-villain, Scorpius, unlike Thrawn and Ozymandias, is one cold-blooded son of a bitch. What he shares in common with them, however, is a willingness to do anything to achieve what he views as the salvation of the world: In this case, ending the Scarran threat once and for all. While he's motivated by a lot of personal emotions as well - notably, his incredible hatred for the Scarran's and desire for revenge - he does technically have a good goal in mind.
Magneto aka Erik Lensherr/Magnus aka MASTER OF MAGNET (X-Men):
The Malcom X to Xavier's Martin Luther King Jr., the path Magneto takes to achieve mutant freedom can easily be traced back to having been exposed first-hand to the horrors of the Holocaust. If mankind could do something like that to each other based on such superficial differences as matters of "race", how can they be trusted to act any more humanely towards mutants? He leads mutants on the best path he knows to make sure they never have to live through what he did.
You may have noticed a trend here: I absolutely LOVE intelligent villains who sincerely believe, not just that they're in the right, but that what they're doing is what's best for EVERYONE.
I actually have to go with Inspector Javert from Les Miserables.
Probity, sincerity, candor, conviction, the sense of duty, are things which may become hideous when wrongly directed; but which, even when hideous, remain grand: their majesty, the majesty peculiar to the human conscience, clings to them in the midst of horror; they are virtues which have one vice, – error. The honest, pitiless joy of a fanatic in the full flood of his atrocity preserves a certain lugubriously venerable radiance. Without himself suspecting the fact, Javert in his formidable happiness was to be pitied, as is every ignorant man who triumphs. Nothing could be so poignant and so terrible as this face, wherein was displayed all that may be designated as the evil of the good.
Kefka and Keyser Soze are good answers too, though.
Screw this guy. He's so awesome. And took so many hours of my life.
edit: It's Malpercio from Baten Kaitos. That game is so underrated, and so amazing.

I also liked the way he yelled judgement when using that attack. Just the voice tone and way it was delivered was satisfying.
Off the top of my head, I'd have to pick:
Crocodile from One Piece
It's not so much that he can wreck people straight up, which he can, but all the planning and manipulation he did on top of that. He was the first major obstacle in the manga's story where the heroes didn't just yawn-steamroll him upon their initial meeting. Main character had to engage in some major plot armor to avoid dying - on more than one occassion.
He was planning on taking over an entire country, had thousands of expendable people working for him in a criminal organization (of which less than a dozen knew who he actually was), and he had the country's people publicly calling him a hero while in the shadows he was undermining their entire government and fueling a massive revolt involving hundreds of thousands. If someone random discovered his plan and accused him, nobody would believe him as he pretty much had the entire population on his side.
Dance, puppets, dance.
Someone mentioned Sylar from Heroes. He was a pretty cool villain as well for awhile. Before the writing went to shit and all that.
To me an effective villain is despicable down into the depths of his mind and his soul, or he's an antagonist with contradictions between some good quality and some awful quality, the latter ultimately winning out.
Claude Frollo from Notre-Dame de Paris. The one from the book, not the horrible cartoon. A devout priest torn between his beliefs and his passion for a beautiful gypsy. Despite Frollo's awful deeds and twisted desires, the author makes you feel torn between pity and hatred for him.
Ellsworth Toohey from The Fountainhead. Definitely the most consistently despicable intellectual I've ever seen, in fiction or otherwise.
Stavrogin from The Demons. A better embodiment of nihilism could not be created. He's the most sinister, disturbing, disgusting creature you will ever see in a book (and that's without reading what the government censored at the time).
Mike Hammer (only in the earlier books, especially One Lonely Night). He's always intended to be the hero, but he doesn't look or act like one, and rarely does anyone in the story think he's anything but a villain. He's stubborn, mean, ugly, rough, a ruthless killer--but he does his job and protects his values all by himself, without fail.

The most dangarous individuals are the ones who thinks they are doing good. so:
Richard Grey, the Master of Supermutants from the first Fallout game.
A broken, deformed, schizophrenic mutant generated by the post Nuclear apocalypse radiation and a man-made virus (the FEV) at the head of a conquering army of mutated, malleable minded supersoldiers and a good-doing religious cult.
Completing certain task, having a very high speech skill and choosing the correct answers, you can even induce him to commit suicide, In one of the most beoutiful discourse ever conceived by the gaming industries. Here it is:
Final boss in Skies of Arcadia. He's not pure evil, but much like Darth Vader he's a tragic figure who succumbs to another villain's twisted philosophy, and buys into it so completely that he sacrifices his soul to the Silver Gigas, just so he can call down the Rains of Destruction and "purify" the world again.
he didn't give a fuck about his second lieutenant, until he found out he loved her. But in turn became a demon god, let's his apostles devour his comrades, rape his second lieutenant and scar her for life, destroyed the protagonist spirit. Everyone is rooting for him in the comics(better deceiver than satan), even I myself can't see him as a villain. Also looks like a freaking boy band which I hate so much
I just had to quote this one.

The issue is that there is no evil. There is only ignorance and all of that which conforms to evil is truly ignorance, either on perceived or perceivers end, or both.
Now this guy seems pretty fucking evil but he actually almost doesn`t kill anyone, more over, he actually exposes the blatant hipocrisy and idiocy of the soul society and the tremendous sickness of its system of justice - and as ridicilous as it sounds, he more or less ends up eradicating espada which were the biggest threat to soul society and humans; and he has some overarching motive behind his actions related to the spirit king so he isn`t doing all the shit for some silly or idiotic reason, though of course, his methods are sick.
Delita is not a villain. He is an anti-hero type. His purpose is the same as Ramza, namely saving the kingdom, he just does it through more morally ambiguous means, but he is not a villain by any definition.

Granted access to the security main-frame to a spy, which caused almost the complete annihilation of the human species.
Constantly tried to cover up this involvement to escape prosecution.
Covered up, that one pilot was actually a hostile sleeper agent, which led to the assassination of the Commander.
Caused the death of a guard on the Pegasus.
Gave away a nuclear warhead to a Cylon, lol. Caused a few hundred or thousand deaths, too.
Made the wrong decision to settle on the planet, which became detected and occupied by the Cylons because of the detonation.
Ok, he fought against signing death sentences.
Worked with the Cylons to find Earth (well, he was tortured, too).
Then, powerless, he wasn't able to cause much harm any more.
I know his character very well, but the end result looks awful.

Then, powerless, he wasn't able to cause much harm any more.
I know his character very well, but the end result looks awful.
Did not know she was a spy. That is kind of what spies are supposed to do, so not a villainous act.
The other option was knowingly endangering himself. Not taking responsibility for something you cannot fix anyway hardly counts as villainous.
This was actually confusing in the plot itself as they seemed to imply he knew she was a Cylon, but did not say anything so she would not kill him. He, however, never found anyone else that was a Cylon so it seemed like his thing just happened to work for her, and for no one else. I found it confusing.
"Caused the death of a guard on the Pegasus." ~ Don't remember this.
"Gave away a nuclear warhead to a Cylon, lol. Caused a few hundred or thousand deaths, too." ~ Yes, this was definitely stupid and villainous.
"Made the wrong decision to settle on the planet, which became detected and occupied by the Cylons because of the detonation." Technically, there is no way to know it was the wrong decision to settle until after the Cylons came. Are you suggesting that we should take President Roslin at her word when she says the scriptures think this new planet is not the one? That hardly seems ok for a secular president.
Except for the warhead act, and the dead guard I don't remember, nothing he has done has really shown "villainy" or the active pursuit of nefarious aims. Gaius Baltar for pretty much the entire run of the show is interested in preserving the human race, he just happens to be pretty terrible at it.
I Usually tend to automatically go agains the villains just cuz im such a sucker for the good guy, but Coyote Starrk from Bleach really got to me. He was one of the few villains that actually showed weaknesses, and second-guessed himself over and over in his own head.
He seemed more like a good guy then a bad guy, but was supposed to act as a villain. His history with lillinette etc make you kinda feel for him.
Spoiler'd Pic cuz it might spoil something for those who aren't at that part yet I guess:

in old fallout, you had to pretty much avoid every melee hit of a deathclaw, because almost all of their hits were critical and crippling. i remember the coolest npc in fallout 2 was a death claw in a robe, too bad there was an annoying delay whenever he started fighting when he took off his robe

I found F2 Enclave soldiers to be damn terrifying: really needed an optimized character to kill them efficiently.
Here are two gems: Sergent Dornan from Camp Navarro + Show Spoiler +
And the comunication from the Poseidon reactor 5 in Gecko to the Enclave oil rig (start at 35s, the speech at 1:25m is just too hilarious "Who the f... who is th.. wha?.. I should kick your effing ass!") + Show Spoiler +

yeah they were nasty, however if you had like a gazillion % small arms skill and a gauss rifle, and some more/better critical perks, and kept aimed shooting them in the eye, they died like flies. the end boss was pretty easy that way too, if you hit him in the head with a critical, he lost all his action points for the next round.
my favorite walkthrough of f2 was when i didn't have one normal npc- i had the robot from the abandoned factory, the robot dog, dogmeat, the deathclaw and the super mutant guy
Sense of humour. Evil intentions. A subtle charm. 'dat ass. She definitely takes the cake, which of course, is ultimately a lie.
Honorable Mentions: Charisma: Definitely has to be Sephiroth from FF7. I remember spending the first half of the game admiring him and thinking he was a bad ass, and then he killed Aerith and it was on. Still, he seemed like such an unstoppable force.
Sheer Interest: Definitely the Borg from Star Trek. They are just such an interesting villain, and every episode with them was good. Especially enjoyed the way they were portrayed in TNG and Voyageur.
Intellectual: Would be a tie between the Joker in the Dark Knight, and Hannibal in Silence of the Lambs. Both characters gave the chaotic genius vibe, and were so charismatic and interesting at the same time.

Jon Irenicus
Thanks for reminding me of that character. Definitely Albedo would be a top choice for me if only for the 1 scene, THE ONE SCENE, where he mutilates himself to scare Momo. That scene was AWESOME.
Dr. Horrible. I can relate to him in many ways. I love cerebral supervillans. If you watch unbreakable, I love the concept that Mr. Glass puts forth about what a supervillain really is. A good supervillain is not a raging psycopath or a raving lunatic, they are actually more similar to superheroes. They have extraordinary abilities and the desire to use them, they just differ in motives from the superhero. I identify so well with Dr. Horrible becuase I have always thought if you viewed a superhero-supervillain dynamic from a different angle, the roles could be completely reversed.
Galactus isnt as much a villian as he is a primal force of existance, but he does some "Evil"-ish things. My favourite, i geuss would have to be the joker, there just isnt another villian i like quite as much.

The biggest reason I like the whole Batman serise is because super powers are not very prevalent in Batman as much. Most of the characters are humans. It adds a level of plausability to the world.
Sojiro was such a good villain! He was just a bit.. loopy, that's all. I like my villians a little tragic anyway. And polite. Shishio was a little bit too inhuman for my taste.

Azula is also HOT.
That too
Sojiro was a great villain till you hear his tragedy, shishio was just so collected till he went completely inasane, I liked cho the swordhunter also cause he was hillarious.
Also a couple other ones from another one of my favorite animes
Treize is an awesome character. I almost hesitate to call him a true villain though. That series has no black and white characters. Everything is shades of grey. Part of the appeal I suppose.
I'm glad people still remember good ol' kain the vampire. I really miss those games. I wish they'd make some new ones, but really just redo the old ones and update the graphics and get as much of the story into it as you can. I wish there were a better picture of him.
Pride from Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood was pretty terrifying if I do say so myself.
Dave Bowman: Hello, HAL. Do you read me, HAL? HAL: Affirmative, Dave. I read you. Dave Bowman: Open the pod bay doors, HAL. HAL: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that. Dave Bowman: What's the problem? HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do. Dave Bowman: What are you talking about, HAL? HAL: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it. Dave Bowman: I don't know what you're talking about, HAL. HAL: I know that you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen. Dave Bowman: [feining ingorance] Where the hell did you get that idea, HAL? HAL: Dave, although you took very thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see your lips move. Dave Bowman: Alright, HAL. I'll go in through the emergency airlock. HAL: Without your space helmet, Dave? You're going to find that rather difficult. Dave Bowman: HAL, I won't argue with you anymore! Open the doors! HAL: Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.
General Grievous I would say from the Star Wars Clone Wars. I mean going up against being with more power (Jedis) and beating them, he has my vote.
Someone also posted ID from Xenogears, and I would say he is similar to Sephiroth in that in some way/shape or form, their mom complex ended up molding them to how they were as villains, crazy strong with unbending will. All because they didn't get the hugs they wanted. =) hehe! them for computer games! =)
Joker for the DC Universe, esp. how his mind worked/didn't work. Especially his character in the Red Hood movie.
Thanos for the Marvel Universe, he always has a way to find a way. hehe!
I only made it through half the thread, but I'm guessing that no one brought up Klogg yet. Even when people talk about adventure games, they always forget about the Neverhood for some reason.
Gotta get more Dio Brando in here. He's pure evil in part 1 and badass in part 3, although a bit too full of himself in part 3. How can you not love this?

Agree so hard with Soujiro, Shishio, Toguro, and Sensui. Add Enishi to that list.
