Doctor Robotnik from the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon one of the best villains i remember from back when i was still young, was suprisingly dark for a sonic storyline and one of the key points was he had already won and "Robotropolis" was the main stage for the series. I truly disspeared when in the later games and cartoons they turned him into "Dr.Eggman", and still to this day i remain hopeful they will return him to his former glory.

That and his Swatbots were badass.

The man on the left - Neil McCauley. Not just because Heat is a badass movie, but because he is so human in his wrongdoings that you're rooting for him as often as you are against him.

I always liked the ones who you could understand. Evil for the sake of being evil always pissed me off - 'I'm evil, because it's fun!!1!!111!!' Kinda Earthworm Jim/Evil Jim level of cheesiness. That was a problem I always had with that Leso Varen from the Riftwar series. Still, the most fun one like this has to be:

Mr Dalton in Hot Fuzz. Every word he said had a moustache twirl in the tone, somehow.

Irenicus was awesome, as some have menioned, but why hasen't anyone mentioned Cersei Lannister? Far more evil than Jaime ever was - in the beginning Jaime was little more than an extension of her will, now he's much more interesting since he realised he actually has something he can use between his ears.

Everything you love to hate.

Two of my favourites which might be difficult to find pictures for - Ulric, Khan of the Nadir in David Gemmell's Legend and Mance Rayder from the Song of Fire and Ice. Two characters who in their own eyes are doing everything they can to protect their people, but simply from the point of view of the protagonists they are the enemy and have to be stopped. Well rounded and you can entirely sympathise with their aims - Jardir Ahmann from the Warded Man and Desert Spear is another in this vein, but not quite as cool - not the sharpest spear in the rack.
