Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.
Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

People in Western Europe still alive as you see. I'm a living proof of this, and when the reactor core meltdown from 1986 occured, i was 2 years old. this is really the smallest problem for the region right now.
I've got a friend who's still missing ~_~ Sigh. It's 4am over there so it's super unlikely she'll actually say anything at this hour but it's not stopping me from fretting, siiiiiiiiiiigh.

The phone lines are swamped with everyone trying to make contact with everyone else. Hopefully you'll hear good news in the morning.

I've gotten contact from basically everyone via Twitter though, including a bunch whom were displaced... she's the last one left, so I'm really, really hoping she's safe but the silence is unnerving Hoping she's just sleeping somewhere
1908: A magnitude 6.6 quake has now struck in central Japan, AP news agency reports, causing Tokyo buildings to sway. It is not clear if this is connected to the earlier quake and aftershocks. More on this as we get it

wtf, seems like it's not off the coast this time.
Oh Mother Earth, please be nice. You've caused enough harm and suffering already.

That's a stupid argumentation. You have no clue how bad Chernobyl was if you really think that.

6.6 is definitely no small size quake, it's very big. Almost as big as Haiti in 2010. Hopefully the damage is minimal and everyone out in Tokyo and surrounding areas are okay!

Are you trolling? Chernobyl caused a lot of destruction.. have you the seen the photographs of the ghost town?

Look, there it goes 25 years since that event. My f***ing goverment started to do something with that after 3 f***g days of denying (as we see they were better with announcing martial law than fighting with this crisis). After that everything they did was giving a Lugol's iodine every child under 5 year. And guess what. Despite this borderline stupidity NOTHING serious have happened. My family are living near the east border of Poland and neither they or anyone suffered at all. Region itself is safe, the worst problem will be for the people who are living VERY close to that power plant.

No, Im just saying that this all talking about how this crisis may threat ALL region (east Asia) is just a lot of bullshit.

no one is saying a reactor malfunction is going to leave the entirety of japan as a hole in the ground but it's still a very serious concern when lives are at stake. please calm down.

Fortunatly the BWR reactors (most Japanese ones) are not anywhere near as unstable as the RBMK reactors, which have since had design changes to fix the flaws that lead to Chernobyl.
On another note, I do believe the media doesn't do a good enough job explaining exactly what venting radioactive steam entails, or indeed much of anything that they report on concerning nuclear power plants.

Talking that this malfunction can couse "a devastating nightmare not just for Japan, but much of that region" is just a talking that can couse panic and nothing more. This is, however, the serious problem for Japaneese.
This is damn insane, it's all I have to say. Hopefully anyone on TL who lives in Japan, knows someone in Japan or well has any sort of soul is doing well. Some of the pictures that have been posted are so devistating that they look fake.
Talked to my Japanese friend (she lives in Kyoto) about the nuclear power-plants (especially the one in Fukushima). It seems that they have them under control now. Something positive, at least...
Japan’s massive earthquake today may be over, but we’re still feeling the effects, from nuclear reactor scares in Japan to tsunami warnings along the entire west coast of North America, from Mexico to Alaska’s Aleutian Islands. Much is still unknown about this earthquake, including official destruction assessments and total death tolls, but here’s what we do know:
