Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

There is a train line from Sendai along the coast to the north. Apparently there has been no contact from two of the trains that were running when the wave hit. It's been many hours now, so that sounds very grim to me. The coast line there was very beautiful, but what will remain?

Understandable.

But I can't help to think about all the horrible things that are still hidden by the darkness of the night and that will only be uncovered tomorrow.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Japan and all people affected by this disaster. We really are at the mercy of the planet when it comes down to it.

This is such a tragedy. I am sure though, that Japan will rise from this, and that their response will be second bar none. Best wishes.

Looking at how powerful the earthquake was, I'd say the damage wasn't that severe after all. A good example is the 2004 tsunami where 220 000+ lives were lost, and the tsunami was weaker than this one. Really shows the quality of Japanese engineering.

I hope the casualties are minimal and strength to everyone who has lost a relative in the earthquake.. I hope, and believe you can recover from that. Life can be quite harsh sometimes, but with faith and a strong will to live, you can overcome everything.

Yes, all things considered it's quite an accomplishment by engineers and civil planners that a disaster of such magnitude could hit so close to a highly populated area, and yet the vast majority of people will survive.

Best wishes to anybody in that area.

2131: Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan has just announced that residents living within 10km (6.2 miles) of the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear station must evacuate their homes, according to the Kyodo news agency. Engineers are trying to fix the cooling system of one of the plant's reactors, which was damaged by the earthquake. The authorities had earlier told some 3,000 residents living within 3km (1.9 miles) to leave.
