Hallo,
So I can only presume some of you still actually play and don't just argue about bAlanCe :D I haven't played since remastered and the damned game keeps crashing on me. I have tried commonly available fixes (disabling onedrive, removing documents from onedrive sync, running in 32 bit mode, deleting the starcraft folder from documents), and it still crashes regularly. Have you experienced this and what did you do about it?
It's not that my PC isn't good enough. My drivers are up to date.
My tiny rant on the end of this is to say: you know which game never crashed? Starcraft Broodwar before being remastered. The game I have played most of my life. Thanks Blizz. I went on a panel show ages ago when SC remastered was announced and my essential message was "don't trust Blizzard, don't have them anywhere near your shit and don't celebrate their presence". I feel endlessly vindicated in this point of view. Why am I fixing a crashing Broodwar in 2026. Honestly...

how is it crashing? if its from trying to play ladder games, try launching SC through asia region, since launching through 'americas' has been buggy for about a week (maybe blizz is updating something)
if its from trying to join public games, try clearing your maps folder (or moving them somewhere on your desktop if you want to keep them). a gigantic map/replay folder can crash your SC if you try to join public games, since blizzard stupidly added a feature where SC scans your maps/replays for duplicates everytime you join a public game

Depending on what you want to play (we don't have a big 1v1 population yet), you may try ShieldBattery: https://shieldbattery.net/
If nothing else, if it crashes there, we will be able to figure out why it's crashing and most likely fix it for you.

The screen freezes but audio keeps playing for a bit before the PC auto restarts. I'm currently playing custom maps offline just to get the hang of modern builds and some offracing before jumping into the ladder.
I'm not expecting detailed 1-1 tech support here naturally, that would be too big of an ask, the above is to answer your question and not in expectation that you'll go all step-by-step problem solving for me!
2Pacalypse, thank you, I'll make my way over to Shieldbattery to abuse your kind nature :p

if your entire pc reboots that doesnt rly sound like starcraft is the true culprit

It only does it when I play SC:R and can play other modern games on it fine. I rely on it for performing live music where it doesn't crash (of course) and for audio production most of the time, where it also very rarely crashes. There's definitely something going on with SC:R that causes the crash.
It's interesting to me that it doesn't sound like anyone else so far has actually had this problem. So it could be something specific to my PC + SC:R.

how long after you boot up SC does your PC restart?

Sounds like a drivers related error.. probably outside of SC:R. I'd say your best bet is to fully wipe and then reinstall GPU drivers. If that doesn’t help, try checking the Windows event log to get a better indication f what exactly is failing.... and then go down a rabbit hole of things you don't want to waste your time on

Yeah but also just try and put a fps cap in the settings and not let it flow. For older gpus back then it was a bug that could cause gpu issues. It was patched but idk

Crashing PC would mean it's something else, not SC specific related issues.
Maybe overheating GPU, bad GPU drivers(reinstall them maybe to an older version they are generally more stable than latest version)
It really does sound like a GPU issue if your audio is still working when the crashing happens. Game specific crashing usually is a GPU problem, sometimes, rarely it's a RAM problem, most of the time it's GPU issue.

If you have access to any decent LLM they're pretty good about diagnosing this stuff from a description of the symptoms + being able to examine your system + logs, for what it's worth
If the game actually crashes (versus your system hanging/restarting), it should output a Minidump.dmp file (I believe it goes to %TEMP%\BlizzardError\ ). If you can get that to me (ideally zipped up, since they're somewhat big but compress well), I can probably tell you where it's crashing and maybe an actual reason.

I really don't want it to be graphics drivers. I run Nvidia's studio driver for better audio performance when I'm producing. I will try switching to the standard driver to test...

Update: I switched to the latest notebook driver as opposed to the studio driver. No change, BW crashed again on first outing. I am now wondering if it is some kind of overheating power-cycle, so I've limited my CPU speed by disabling speed boost, and will see where that gets me. The graphics card wasn't getting hot particularly but the CPU was.

Weird but that may have fixed it. Why SC:R is pushing my PC to boost the CPU all the way to max and get so hot that it power cycles is a bit of a mystery. But that seems to be what is happening. Using ThrottleStop to switch off boosting and keep the CPU down to base frequency.

They do get hot eh... makes me question the wisdom of having it in a laptop at all tbh. What's the point in all that power if anything above base frequency causes stability issues...

if you dont have the fps cap turned on, it'll just run as fast as your cpu will let it, which means it doesnt matter how old starcraft is it'll use all available cpu time no matter what. meaning potentially causing overheating on a system like a laptop
also the ui for the menus and stuff in remastered is using a web browser situation so it's a lot more demanding than the actual game itself or the menus in non-remastered

I asked about the 13th and 14th gen intel processors because they have a common hardware defect that causes things like what you're describing: https://www.reddit.com/r/intel/comments/1egthzw/megathread_for_intel_core_13th_14th_gen_cpu/
But if you're on a laptop, I dunno
