Crisis in Japan - Page 55

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Once again, my thoughts go out to the Japanese people, and my condolences to anyone who has lost someone there. According to what I have been able to find, at least 1,000 have died now ![]()

The Jiji Press news agency says the levels are eight times above normal. Its report also cites a ministry official as saying there is a "possibility of a radioactive leak".

My understanding is that the problem isn't with the reactor itself but with pressurised steam that has come in contact with the reactor. A radiation leak is going to be this steam being released into the environment rather than a meltdown. I'm more worried about whether this will damage the reputation of nuclear power than the potential health risks.

On the german news they said that there is a danger of a meltdown because the cooling is not working properly atm and is only running on batteries. So if they can not get the cooling back up the reactor could overheat and meltdown. Lets hope it wont get that far. I feel with the people of Japan today :-/

The chances of this turning into a meltdown are slim to none, and the environmental effects probably aren't going to be too bad, either. But people freak out of everything these days, and it would be really sad to see nuclear technology get set back because of the fear of uninformed people. I suppose the government has to evacuate just to be safe, but all that's doing right now is increasing the fear amongst people. Hopefully this doesn't spark too much anti-nuclear hate because in this day and age it's really a safe and reliable technology, and I feel most people think of it as Chernobyl. The pressure is rising and radiation levels are increasing, but the US has already delivered coolant and everything I've read seems to indicate they have that under control right now.

"The Kyodo news agency is now citing a safety panel as saying that the radiation level inside one of the reactors at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant is 1,000 times higher than normal." this is horrible

Only in Hillary's head. #2140: Meanwhile, officials in Washington have said the US military did not provide any coolant to a nuclear plant in Japan. Earlier, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said US Air Force "assets" had been used to do so.

That measurement was taken inside the containment area after they started releasing steam into it. There is a lot of miscommunication and general panic in the media regarding the state of the nuclear power plant right now. The power plant is not going to explode or meltdown any time soon. It is a serious situation, but mainly because there is a real risk that the plant itself could become damaged beyond repair. Unless there are more failures and the people that are working on the problems do incredibly stupid things, the environment should not be affected.
