Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

CBS5 reporting a dozen or so sunken boats. County spokesman says at least $2m damage." KGO Radio tweets: "Crescent City OES: All docks are gone after first surge, 35 boats crushed, water starting to fill harbor parking lot." http://edition.cnn.com/video/flashLive/live.html?stream=1 CalTech and USGS are holding a press conference right now discussing the Tsunami's effects on Northern California, and that things won't be over for a few more hours. They're saying that most of the damage in Santa Cruz and Crescent City is due to extremely strong currents and tides rather than waves themselves. There was some flooding, but not a ton. Waves hit 6.5' and 6.0' in some cities. Also, every time you hear a bleeping noise in the background, they said it means another 5.0 aftershock has hit Japan. I've heard 4 bleeps since I started watching, and they reported tens and tens of aftershocks ranging from 4.0 - 7.1. I'm wondering if all these aftershocks will have an effect on anything else.

If the nuclear plant said they had a leak, it's probably something like one drip a minute. Generally speaking, it sounds bad, but if you think about it and get some information, it's not really a concern for regular people at all. If they start more evacuations, yeah... then you can be concerned.

The phenomenon is not unusual for a major quake. Interesting info for anyone who's not already aware that this happens. This probably cuts a few milliseconds off the time of a year. Japanese authorities are now to release radioactive vapour to ease pressure, AP news agency reports. Engineers are trying to fix the cooling system to the main reactor, damaged in the quake. Thousands of local residents have been evacuated. evacuating :S shit hits the fan Radioactive steam isn't a massive issue though. Moving people away is a precaution but we're not looking at a meltdown or anything like that. My understanding is that the reactor itself has been shut down and it's just the steam that the plant uses to run the dynamos that is causing problems. This steam is radioactive due to contact with the reactor but we're not looking at an explosion.

As long as the containment is intact, it should prevent a major release of radioactivity even during a meltdown. Afaik the radioactivity of released steam should be lessened by filters. Let's hope for the best.

Earlier this morning I found out that he had severe bruising and some internal bleeding after being slammed into a tree by the tsunami. Don't know his exact condition, but I pray he lives. I'm sorry to hear that. Thought and prayers are with you and your friend.
