Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Once again, modern engineering and government codes will keep people safe. They came out later and said the cooling systems were back on at the most troublesome one. They have backup diesel generators to run the cooling systems, and the systems are designed to be fine without power for awhile. NYTimes made it sound like they were under control.

But it's the truth I think everyone appreciates how incredible it is that a nation as urban as Japan can be hit by a quake this strong and take so little damage. It's a triumph of humanity over nature that we had the foresight to plan against an earthquake, a society that ensured that all buildings would be covered and the ingenuity to achieve it. I have heard about it before and what exactly makes it this strong to be able to sustain the quake? If you let buildings sway with the earthquake instead of trying to stand still, they are less likely to be damaged.

Certainly they have good warning systems in place especially after the Indonesia tsunami? I think even before that Japan had the best tsunami warning system, afterwards it probably got even better... But you can't do much more than warn the people, no way to stop this shit when it's coming. But anyway, I'd say Japan is the first country you'd want to be in if you're hit by an earthquake and a tsunami of this scale :/

Japan has always been traditionally more prepared than its neighbors for these disasters due to its history of earthquakes and better economic situation.

1751: All Japanese ports have reportedly been closed. "It's a big mess. All discharge operations are suspended in the area," a Japanese ship broker told the Reuters news agency. Another broker said: "Most or all coal stocks will be washed out at many of the coal-fired power plants. Ports will be closed at least for a short time until damage assessments can take place."

At least where I grew up (near a fault line), our building codes are pretty solid and we did a bunch of earthquake drills in the schools when I was a kid. And if the earthquake's bad enough, there's only so much you can do. Had that earthquake been closer to Tokyo instead of up north, those buildings probably would not have fared as well.

I have heard about it before and what exactly makes it this strong to be able to sustain the quake? This. Edit: While I know this is a tragedy for those involved watching that video just makes me think "humanity, fuck yeah". Truly incredible. I'm not sure what is preventing it from collapsing but i assume it was wheels on the building that i heard when a senior was telling me about it? The entire building is designed to bend so it can move with the quakes, absorbing the shock throughout the length of it where a more rigid building would break. But the fact that we can intentionally design a skyscraper to be flexible is staggering. I learned about this in... physics? But to actually see it in action is wow... Never thought I'd see skyscrapers swaying like that.
