Crisis in Japan - Page 47

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

this is just really unfortunate

mother nature is becoming more and more destructive

Yay for being warned for posting that you pray everyone who is involved in the earthquake is safe.

I wonder how long this will continue..Looks there could be even more damage the upcoming days.

English website, I guess.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I could have figured that the trip across the pacific would lessen the waves a bit but that initial rush of "oh shit" totally like...brainwashes you for a bit there.

I hate to do this (not read through 50 pages and check) but I think this deserves repeating even if its already been posted:

The headline you won't be reading: "Millions saved in Japan by good engineering and government building codes." But it's the truth

This is crazy. Japan is one of the most prepared nations, though.

It shouldn't be bad in the US west coast but a few over curious people trying to watch might still be killed.

Yeah, hate to say it but if it was going to happen to someone I'm glad that it's Japan over any other place. They are the most prepared and the losses in any other area would have been way larger... (glad probably isn't the right word, but I hope you know what I mean)

Yeah...imagine if this quake hit a 3rd world region. The death toll would've been in the millions easily. The Haiti quake was only a 7.0....this was a fkn 8.9! Insane to think about =\

I think everyone appreciates how incredible it is that a nation as urban as Japan can be hit by a quake this strong and take so little damage. It's a triumph of humanity over nature that we had the foresight to plan against an earthquake, a society that ensured that all buildings would be covered and the ingenuity to achieve it.

Nuclear physicist Dr Walt Patterson tells the BBC it sounds like there is a "serious problem" at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant. "It's the sort of thing that nuclear engineers have nightmares about," he says. "If it is not resolved in the next few hours it will get serious. If the core is uncovered, then those rods at the top may get hot enough to melt themselves."

The Tokyo Electric Power Company has said the pressure inside the No. 1 reactor at its Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant has been rising, with the risk of a radiation leak, according to the Jiji Press news agency. Tepco planned to take measures to release the pressure, the report added. The reactor's cooling system began to malfunction after the earthquake. People living close to the plant were later evacuated as a precaution.

According to BBC it seems like there's a bigger problem with their nuclear plant now.

I have heard about it before and what exactly makes it this strong to be able to sustain the quake?

Yeah, it's amazing and worth noting.

...? I don't understand. He's implying (by the use of the word 'good') that Japan's structural engineering is lacking when it's probably the most prepared country in the world for earthquake disasters. The damage toll would've been far worse had this hit anywhere else, I think.

I have been a lurker forever of TL, the following event pushed me to register and comment on.

I was watching the stream of a featured SC2 player (I won't give names) when the news came in about the earthquake. The streamer and a friend of his were talking on Vent/Skype about the quake along the lines of:

+ Dude, did you see what happened to Japan?
- Seriously dude, cya Naruto!
+ Yeah, there won't be Naruto episode for months I bet!

This mockery went on for a while, and during that while I was ashamed of being a part of this community. It is amazing how the "professionals" who are supposed to bring esports into the mainstream can be so (insert the right word here).

I think you should do the community a favor and give out these names. Personally, I know I wouldn't want to view any of their games ever again.

I'm not sure what is preventing it from collapsing but i assume it was wheels on the building that i heard when a senior was telling me about it?

No, he is saying that the media is so fixated on the damage and those who have died that it ignores the damage 'prevented' by the good engineering. This is cemented in that he says "But it's the truth" at the end. If he were mocking the quote then the word 'but' wouldn't be there. That's my interpretation of the quote at least.

Ah, no. He's saying that Japanese engineering and preparedness is really, really fantastic and should be getting a lot of appreciation. Use of the word good is a compliment in this sentence, I'm not sure how you read it otherwise. I suppose I could be mistaken but I'm reading that tweet as a big compliment toward Japan in the face of a huge disaster.

Best post in here. I'm just dumbstruck at how little damage the quake has done so far. The infrastructure must be incredibly strong.
