mother nature is becoming more and more destructive
Forum Index > General Forum |
Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I could have figured that the trip across the pacific would lessen the waves a bit but that initial rush of "oh shit" totally like...brainwashes you for a bit there. *phew*

The headline you won't be reading: "Millions saved in Japan by good engineering and government building codes." But it's the truth

It shouldn't be bad in the US west coast but a few over curious people trying to watch might still be killed. Yeah, hate to say it but if it was going to happen to someone I'm glad that it's Japan over any other place. They are the most prepared and the losses in any other area would have been way larger... (glad probably isn't the right word, but I hope you know what I mean) Yeah...imagine if this quake hit a 3rd world region. The death toll would've been in the millions easily. The Haiti quake was only a 7.0....this was a fkn 8.9! Insane to think about =\

Nuclear physicist Dr Walt Patterson tells the BBC it sounds like there is a "serious problem" at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant. "It's the sort of thing that nuclear engineers have nightmares about," he says. "If it is not resolved in the next few hours it will get serious. If the core is uncovered, then those rods at the top may get hot enough to melt themselves." The Tokyo Electric Power Company has said the pressure inside the No. 1 reactor at its Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant has been rising, with the risk of a radiation leak, according to the Jiji Press news agency. Tepco planned to take measures to release the pressure, the report added. The reactor's cooling system began to malfunction after the earthquake. People living close to the plant were later evacuated as a precaution. According to BBC it seems like there's a bigger problem with their nuclear plant now.

This mockery went on for a while, and during that while I was ashamed of being a part of this community. It is amazing how the "professionals" who are supposed to bring esports into the mainstream can be so (insert the right word here). This is cemented in that he says "But it's the truth" at the end. If he were mocking the quote then the word 'but' wouldn't be there. That's my interpretation of the quote at least.

Use of the word good is a compliment in this sentence, I'm not sure how you read it otherwise. I suppose I could be mistaken but I'm reading that tweet as a big compliment toward Japan in the face of a huge disaster.
