Russell Westbrook-OKC 27.0 3. Pau Gasol-LAL 26.1 4. Paul Millsap-UTA 25.6 5. Dwight Howard-ORL 25.5 Is Paul, Westbrook, Gasol, Millsap and Howard the best 5 man lineup you can think of? Including teamwork, obviously not. Individually? Because those are the top 5 most efficient players in the league and when you're looking at PER, because teammates are irrelevant, position becomes irrelevant. Therefore, you should be able to take the 5 most efficient players in the league (in this case 3 PF/Cs and 2 PGs) and together they would make the most efficient lineup possible. There is no theoretical combination of active NBA players that would be more efficient than this 5. Does anyone believe that?

The best team in the NBA is obviously the one that can run up the score against the dregs as high as possible. Bonus points as well for shooting meaningless buckets late in losses to keep the score close. Stuff like resting starters and developing role players in garbage time during blowouts is clearly not Hollinger-approved.

Does anyone believe that? hey can someone define clearly what PER is and how it's calculated? i tried googling the definition and they just said its player efficiency ratio. is it calculated in terms of how well you score per possession? does it take into account other statistics than scoring such as assists, blocks, steals, etc?

"Millsap recorded 17 points (7-11 FG, 3-4 FT) and six rebounds Saturday at Charlotte. Recommendation: That's a decent line, sure, but if Millsap isn't scoring 11 points in 28 seconds or tripling his career total for three-pointers made in a single game, what's the point? " LOL

PER weights various categories. What is it being weighted relative to? Why not just make scoring be worth a 10x more than rebounds if it doesn't matter/is made up? You can't run regressions against numbers that don't exist.

People got way too carried away about Richard Jefferson's 1 bad year. He dropped like a whopping 8 points off of his scoring average in 1 year and some people said he was washed up. Ah well I love it when the media blows things out of proportion.

Now I'm not exaggerating, his work is truly awful and is a mockery of statistics which is a mockery of real math. He produces negative value. Do Hollinger fans understand the significance of PER? Because there is none. It's the statistical equivalent of a KFC chicken bowl. You take a bunch of empty, artificially inflated stuff and cram them all together to create an average of empty, artificial stuff that's all weighted differently. The KFC chicken bowl maker adds a cup of cheesy for every cup of mashed potatoes. Why? No one knows. Does it make the bowl taste better (more accurate)? Fuck no. Also Rondo had room to shoot all night during the Miami game. I know he's into inflating his assists and all (sometimes to the detriment of the team) these days, but they were begging him to shoot and it wasn't pretty when he did. It really will become a liability in the playoffs when Ray Allen forgets his metamucil. They destroyed the Heat anyways, for the most part, but that would've been lights out if he had a shot to back up the rest of his team. Just imagine if he had a legit 35% 3pt shot (this year's 40 doens't count when he's taking less than 1 per game.) I bet you'd wet yourself, Ace. admittedly the PER stuff is way over my head but I enjoy reading his articles (him breaking down trades/FA signings in particular) and generally agree with his evaluation of a player's worth (salary wise). My other favorite writer is charley rosen from fox sports. He used to coach with Phil Jackson in the ABA and he basically focus on player's flaws and talk about what they can improve on. it's a nice change of pace from the typical nba writer anyhow.
