No but yeah. Different topics are good. The 76ers can afford to play well this year, since the draft class is weak. Their problem is somewhat similar to the Rockets, they have a bunch of mediocre to sweet pieces but no superstar talent. They may as well try to blow it up, not trading Iggy was probably a bad idea, his contract is only gonna look worse in the next CBA.

Let's all look at Chris Paul's stat line and solemnly acknowledge his greatness:

33 points on 13/21 shooting. 7 rebounds, 15 assists with 2 turnovers and 5(!) steals. Not to mention playing 43 minutes after a concussion. Settle down baller!

It probably isn't good for his long-term health, and if I was the Hornets' management, I wouldn't have let him play more than 20 minutes. But the fact he wanted to play is impressive and tough - so yeah, it's worthy of praise. Doesn't mean that I would agree with his decision if I was his mother.

Since we're not the mother of football players, how is that different from fans and the media praising football players or boxers for showing their toughness by continuing to play/practice after a concussion? After all, that's why they did it, to show that they were tough, wanted to win, and were committed to the team.

I'm trying to argue that such praise is unfortunately incompatible with the new wave of trying to take care of the players' heads.

After Kobe hurt his ankle and left the game, the triangle offense flowed sooo nicely. The Lakers got layup after layup, and they expanded the lead quite a bit. The Bynum/Odom/Gasol combo can be really beautiful to watch. Then Kobe came back in, started jacking up shots, and it turned into a close game.

Also, Bynum is a frickin beast.

I don't really care. I can not help my visceral reaction to praise an athlete that strives to get back on the court, even at the risk of their own long term health. Do you want to say that I'm culpable for my favorite athletes' behavior and risk taking? Fine. But don't fool yourself into thinking that owners pay athletes or fans love athletes for being healthy and avoiding risks.

Athletes are young men who are, relatively, well compensated for their performance at a physical activity. These activities carry risks, like careening into another point guard while fighting for a loose ball. Adults are allowed to engage in risky behavior, as long as they consent to that behavior and are aware of the risks: Chris Paul consented. Should he have consented? I don't know. I'm not his doctor or his family - I just watch him play basketball. So to be completely clear: I am praising Chris Paul for his tremendous play, so soon after a concussion. I didn't think that I would have to write so much for 10 words.

EDIT: Well, after rereading this, I kinda hate my tone...anyways, I don't mean anything rude, it just comes off that way.
