Derrick Rose has played 62 games and averages 24 points per game on 44.2% shooting. He averages 4 rebounds and 8.1 assists per game with only 3.5 turnovers.
Lebron James has played 63 games and averages 26.2 points per game on 49.6% shooting. He averages 7.6 rebounds and 7.6 assists per game with 3.6 turnovers.
They have practically identical production except Lebron scores more, shoots a better percentage, provides superior defense. These are just "box score" stats, if you want to use advanced statistics, Lebron blows away Rose based upon efficiency.
EDIT for reply to Ace: It's similar, depends which metric you use but it's close enough. Rose shouldn't be in the MVP discussion but he is certainly having an excellent year. That's not how MVP voting works. If the best player got the award every year, MJ would have won the thing 8 times. It's party performance, part popularity. People don't much care for Lebron right now, so Derrick is the favorite.
If you are just arguing that Lebron is the best player in the NBA, you're probably right. People factor in lots of nebulous stuff into their MVP vote.

Really wish people would quit nut huggin Derrick Rose.
Ok he's good, and ok he's playing out of his mind, but he is not mvp and its getting really annoying listening to people say we aren't looking hard enough at his games to suddenly realize he has reached basketball nirvana somehow because he drives to the basket.

Like I said before though, people see him carrying the bulls when their most important players were injured (boozer early, Noah later). Lebron always had Wade and bosh with him regardless of his individual performance which is evidently higher than rose at the moment.

At the end of the season Rose could well be the "best player on the best team", if we take out SA and BOS (balanced and without a clear MVP candidate). Dirk is the other strong possibility. I'd be happy to give it to whoever has the better record at that time. Either way it's close, both players and their teams have had great years.

I will definitely NOT get into a debate about "what the MVP award means." If that is what you were debating, then okay, I guess Derrick Rose can win it. But it would be similar to Steve Nash's MVP in 2006 and Charles Barkley in 1993 - mistakes.

There really isn't any debate that some years it doesn't go to the best player. MVP voters, like all people, enjoy the novelty of a new player winning the MVP, and have been looking for anyone to even make a legitimate case so they wouldn't have to give it to Lebron for a 3rd year. Especially after this summer.
Even so, you could probably still argue against Rose, but everyone's already fallen in love with him for this year.

Believe it or not, I have absolutely zero problem with this line of thinking. MVP awards are basically novelties in all major sports. I'm okay with people wanting "new and fresh" or just voting for guys that they like - fine with me. But I can not stand the ignorance or intellectual dishonesty of people who try to justify their voting with anything other than: "I like Rose more than Lebron." Because once you bring basketball into the equation, it's not even a discussion.

You forgot the biggest mistake of all: '97 Carl Malone

epic epic game GSW vs ORL. you guys should watch the replay.
|
Holy shit @ Orlando vs GSW. + Show Spoiler +That overtime was the craziest thing I've ever seen. 41 points and the 3-point shootout was madness!
|
I propose a voluntary moratorium on Heat and Derrick Rose MVP discussions.
Sixers are a bad team that is too well coached, so much for draft picks.
The thunder are playing ok, but they haven't been as hot as the Hornets have this season.
|
yeah that gsw vs orl game (judging by the box score) looks crazy. 22 and 19 pts in 5min of OT?? then you have them hit a combined 36 shots from downtown (36 of 67 overall).
gonna check out the channels later to see if the game was on

2nd
the Sixers aren't really that bad...just goes to show what defense can do (playing them at home is bananas)

What helps decide MVP awards are also regular season standings ...usually the team with the better record has a better chance to get the MVP award. If the records are too close though then they will look to see things like injuries for the team, specific impacts the player makes, and which team had the least overall help..
I 3rd the petition to simmer down the MVP talks though lol.

D-Rose already has 17 in the 1st (a new career high for a quarter). 5/6 from trey ball land (his career high in 3's for a game is 5....which he has tied). smh...gonna be a long night for the Mormon squad.
