there is a nice quote from GRRM floating around about that
He does have anxiety about the TV series passing the point where he is in the writing. The metaphor he used was feeling like he was “bound to train tracks and could see smoke wafting,” though he can’t yet see the train. Martin mentioned that the Tyrion book doesn’t take away from his other writing, because it was mostly his publishers selecting the quotes, so people had no basis for their complaints about it pulling him away from his work on TWOW

... But many fans are grumbling that Martin hasn't been spending enough time of late in his mythical kingdom of Westeros and its surroundings. On the list of things Martin is doing instead of writing the next Game of Thrones book? Reviewing the latest episodes of Breaking Bad, editing a sci-fi series and writing a novella.
This summer, even HBO's execs piped up, saying that they'd really appreciate it if Martin were to "get busy writing" ...
(In case you haven't seen it, they were performing this song about them asking GRRM to be faster in writing the books.)
Haha that's great. Yeah... I guess GRRM isn't our bitch. I still can't help but worry whether or not he will finish A Song of Ice and Fire before something happens to him, like Robert Jordan and Wheel or Time. However, if Brandon Sanderson picks up The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring like he did for the Wheel of Time, I couldn't fathom any complaints! Loved his Mistborn Trilogy.
As amazingly sad as it would be if he where to pass away or similar, he has passed on what he considers to be the ending of the series to the producers of GoT. So we will get an ending either way. I just hope its because he finished the books.
But there is a problem for HBO and the show, in that in 2 years the show will have caught up with the books. Another book will probably be finished by then, so it can run for another year after..and then theres a good possibility there will be several years waiting for the next book and season, and then 3-4 more years for the supposedly last season after that.
Remember that book 3 is split in half, and they could always split 4/5

Book 3 was also split into two books in most places where it was sold. It was simply twice as large as the others in the series. Book 4 and 5 isn't. Of course, there is still plenty enough content to split them anyways.
Man, I just finished season 3 after putting it aside for far too long and I've got to say, this show surprised me greatly. I like how it follows the stories of a lot of people so there are no main protagonist and there are virtually no plot armor for any characters, except a few. The only downsides though, that they have way too many sex scenes, hell if I want to watch boobs I'll watch porn instead. Also, Daenerys must be my least favorite character of any films or books I've seen lately. That bitch always goes out of her way to make the most stupid decision possible and things always seems to work out in the end one way or another, add to the fact that she always make empty threats because apparently she is the rightful heir to the throne blah blah (it kinda got dull after the 10th times she said it in the show).

Book 5 is also large, so they could easily split it into two seasons. Overall, they can make at least 4 more seasons from the existing content without even trying to stretch it.

In my opinion quite the opposite is true. I'd be happy if they would put book 4 and 5 in just one long Season. (Maybe about 16 or 17 Episodes?). I already thought the books were really, really long-winded.+ Show Spoiler +
And in my opinion they are very descriptive rather than plot driven. A lot of traveling going on, many new places getting explored, and it felt a little bit more like the pieces get put into place for the last 2 or 3 books.
Although all these little details and information may be relevant for a book reader, i think it may be hard to convert that into the TV-series format.

They probably don't have the budget or the time to film an 18 episode season.

GRRM said that 6th book is bigger than book 5 so he'll give himself another 2 years to do the 7th book i suppose
Really doubt they'll make two seasons with 4/5. They've already advanced a couple of storylines past what they are up to in ASOS, AFFC/ADWD are great books but not exactly action packed and if they stretch that into more than one season I think people will lose interest.
GRRM really needs to have TWOW out by the end of next year otherwise I think the show will overtake the book.
"Just when you thought HBO’s Game of Thrones had finished announcing its season 4 cast, there is one more role left: Styr, the Magnar of Thenn. He will be played by Russian actor Yuri Kolokolnikov"
I think Martin has 3 seasons to finish up his next book. Books 4 and 5 seem large in page count but are not as fast paced as the first 3. I expect when the time comes he will buckle down and finish it in time unless there are complications in writing and he gets a block similar to book 5. I do however question if he can finish the last book in time. Book 6 looks to be action packed according to what Martin has already stated and can be split into two seasons, but he will certainly have to work more diligently on book 7 if he want to get it done in time for the show.
Anyhow, looking forward to the next season. Having read all the books I'm very impressed with the show on the whole. Adaptions are tough to pull off because you have to walk a fine line of staying true to the broad strokes of the source material while recognizing that TV is a different medium in which you cannot simply transfer the text word for word onto the screen. HBO has done a great job of this while even expanding on the source material and adding their own ideas which has kept it interesting even for someone who already knows what's going to happen.
