Lol. Way to go, blame the consumers when your product isn't good. I don't see bulldog/PPD taking away that many viewers from main stream in other top tournaments (except when casters are bad). If the viewing platform is good, viewers will watch from there. I think the low viewing numbers even after bulldog stopped streaming speaks for itself. The issue is not about viewers not welcoming new platforms at all.

You don't get to be shocked that your viewership is terrible when you pick a platform that's actually despised. I do think Twitch needs some competition, but there's a few sites that I will not watch stuff on under any circumstances. Facebook, Azubu, and MLG just flat out aren't happening.
Now personally I very much dislike ESL as an organization, but I thought they might have someone with some common sense somewhere in the company. You've gotta know if you go off twitch viewership is going to take a hit, no matter where you go you're going to lose some viewership, surely they made peace with that. But to go to a platform people actually hate? You have to know that's going to MASSIVELY cost you in viewership. That viewership hit is going to make all your other sponsors very upset. So you've just burned other sponsors with your shitty numbers because you chose a god awful platform. Is that worth the paycheck facebook is waving in your face? I'm having a hard time believing it is.
ESL is getting torched because they made a boneheaded move for some short term profits, I'll not be shedding a single tear over that.

Is Facebook as a streaming service really that terrible for people? Despite the late start & apparently mic issues, I woke up today to catch the end of VP/VGT on the ESL website and it ran just fine for me. My only complaint would be that the stream is automuted by default for whatever reason. Seems like a lot of people are having issues with mobile too? - but to argue against that, Twitch's mobile app (on Android at least) is also pretty bad, stuttering/slow loading/ads for me in recent updates.
In terms of accessibility it's definitely on the bad side. I wouldn't have known where to see the official EN stream if not for the survival guide posted on reddit. Wonder if the in-game client viewing numbers had a significant boost compared to other tourneys.
The whole thing regarding ESL complaining about Bulldog or w/e is just bullocks; Valve specifically indicated anyone was free to broadcast within reason. Wonder how the ESL sponsors feel right now.
Anyway, hoping for PENTA to beat EG cause it'd be funny, Mineski to stay alive, and Liquid/Na'Vi to be decent games

People hate Facebook on just principle alone. But apparently people were having lag and stutter issues, audio issues, and for a long time one of the two streams just didn't exist.
I use Twitch's mobile app on Android all the time and don't get any issues personally. But I have Twitch Prime so no ads, maybe that's what's screwing you up?

on facebook itself it was pretty terrible for me but the embedded video from esl's website worked just fine. i have no problem with the exclusivity thing. they need the money. i dont think sponsors alone can afford everything. its already hard to find sponsors for dota tournaments
|
Exclusivity in and of itself I've got no problem with, you just have to be cognizant of who you're getting into bed with. Surely they could have come to some exclusivity agreement with youtube or something, is hitbox still a thing? lol. It's going to be even harder to find sponsors in the future when you have abysmal viewer numbers because the platform you decided to go exclusive with is hated. "Yeah, hey, our last tournament pulled 5k max viewers, want to sponsor us?" good luck with all that.
If they're hell bent on going exclusive with FB, A) know you're going to kill your numbers and B) maybe force FB to have the best experience possible? You've gotta put your best foot forward so you better be working together to wow people. You can't have streams plagued by issues and rookie mistakes on top of being on a platform that sucks.

So even when i click the facebook link, all i get is the same repeat videos... is the stream not live?

Pity Mineski when ice3 is not doing well. At the same time i hope LFY not getting eliminated too. Aikzz... Though Fnatic is SEA, but i hope they lose today, yeah~~~

FB bias aside, for me the only thing good/better about the streaming platform is the pure viewing experience only aka video/audio which isn't a hard task considering twitch is still relatively backward on that department
but anything else still need a lot of work. no VOD, shitty chat, questionable mobile mode, etc

Genting isn't on right now, the current ESL thing is the 2nd chance qualifier for Kaowice. I'm not sure where that's even being streamed.

Its not me, but quite obviously a lot of people like to spam shitty emotes in twitch streams so they care about the chat. lol
I always full screen anyways myself, but I still ain't gonna watch it on facebook. If I want to put it on my tv, a twitch stream is by far easiest and if im gonna go upstairs and sit at my pc ill watch in client.

Let's go Mineski!
My guesses for today:
EG 2- 0 Penta Mineski 2 - 0 LFY VGJ.Thunder 2 - 1 Complexity Team Liquid 2 - 0 Na'Vi Vici Gaming 2 - 1 Fnatic TNC 2 - 0 Newbee

I think the way forward if valve wants the scene to be sustainable is
1. Bring back compendiums
2. Non valve events to charge tickets. Maybe a 2 price tier system, 1 including cosmetics/compendium and another just basic tickets for replays or watch in client
3. Valve to be less greedy and take a much smaller cut for compendium/tickets/cosmetics, so that these are reliable sources of revenue
4. Streamers not allowed to stream the competition until after it is over. That way if a viewer wanna watch, they either watch from authorised stream which organisers get ad revenue, or they have to buy tickets. Either way, organisers get revenue.
5. Depending on how strict they want to be, organisers may want to ban highlights or clips of the tournament until after a certain date. In this case, they better have in-house or hire someone to make these reels because many people rely on them.
I'm quite certain no tournament organiser is making much or any money. This leaves them very reliant on sponsors. Overall I don't think the scene is sustainable, but a solution is available if valve chooses to implement..
