Is there are specific reason you want to shop for a laptop in Canada (in particular, in Alberta)?
Gaming laptops are typically $1000+, and plus if you buy something here won't you be taxed for it on your way home?
*edit: wings & beer all the way.
|
Yeah, there's no apparent reason actually, since I'll be there for the next month or so I think that it could be a good time to get one. Most of the stores in france don't have any(sold out >.>)and the only ones left are 1500+ euros.
|
As a french that live in Canada I usually had no problem using electronics in both countries, you must take caution though and read what kind of alimentation goes and adapt to both the different standards of plug shapes (la forme de la prise), and 220V vs 110V.
Often charger take both 220V or 110V (ask the vendor and check yourself on it) in this case you will only have to get an adapter for the shape.
As for what laptop to buy, I'm no expert but I would suggest you the one that have gaming series and are reknown for it. Avoid things like Dell, HP and such and go for better constructors like MSi, Asus etc. If you want something good enough though, 800+$ dollars might be something to think of (it isn't much for a good gaming laptop), below you might get something good enough now but that won't last for long. But all of this depends on your standard and the kind of games you want to play.

You should definitely check out Banff, if you are into skiing its even better, but a beautiful place either way.

Eat poutines and watch hockey games in Quebec!

@ rezoacken: I see, so I should check for the alimentation and everything should be ok. I mostly would like a laptop that can play SC2 with low/med/high quality, nothing crazy
@ Inkarnate: I'll check it out, since I enjoy and love skiing (though i suck :D) I'm sure i'll enjoy it.
@ Chill: I'm staying at my Aunt's house somewhere in Edmonton, not sure where exactly

I've been to just about every province. I used to live in Edmonton, it's great. I love the mall.
Since you're going to be in Alberta...
Come to BC! It's a lot warmer here than the rest of Canada. Vancouver is a really busy place, lots of shopping and a bunch of other touristy stuff to do.
Stay away from Saskatchewan, particularly Saskatoon. I used to live there too and it's like the butthole of Canada
Also I'd recommend going to Banff or Jasper, the mountains are really beautiful if you've never seen them before
|
dude you HAVE to go to banff... i'm from toronto but i still love that park it is awesome (although at this time of year it's starting to get cold). also i'm pretty sure big ticket items (like laptops) have a tax if you buy them here and bring them home. not sure though.
|
Most of BC is great; Vancouver, Victoria, the mountains, the lakes, Banff, Jasper, etc.
If you only can only spend your time in one province, make it BC.

I agree with all of this.
Edmonton and Calgary aren't particularly nice places to visit. Not the worst to live in, but not the best to visit. Banff and Jasper are must see's, West Ed mall is alright the first time, but really it's just a big mall :/. Definitely go to Vancouver, and if you can Vancouver Island. Victoria is such a nice place!
Remember to watch lots of Hockey games!

There's literally nothing unique to do in Calgary and Edmonton. WEM is a fucking mall, and the Calgary Tower is smaller than the office buildings next to it. Eat steak, go to Vinyl and any of the bars and 17th to drink. Take a girl to the zoo.
Outside of that, go to the mountains. Basically, stay in the mountains to do stuff and stay in Calgary to drink.
|
Welcome to Edmonton! It was minus 30-35Cish with the windchill last week, and plenty more of that to come lol
As for things to do, theres not much. I guess you could go check out the "Telus world of science" building, it has giant light shows and exhibits etc. Theres a street we have here during december thats called "candy cane lane". Its basically just a street with houses covered in christmas lights. If your staying for a month, it will definitely be on soon. There are these glass pyramids close to downtown, that have 4 different ecosystems in them for people to walk through and experience. They have a jungle and desert theme for 2 of the 4 with tons of trees ponds etc. Makes it seem real.
You could check out a hockey game at rexall place if you get a chance to. Tickets are not that much money, and its generally a fun time even if you dont know much about hockey. Other than that, im not too sure what else. Either way enjoy your stay.

Oi! Saskatoon ain't the asshole of Canada, that's Fort Mac. Slave Lake's the taint, and Regina is... I dunno, probably the ballsack.
Saskatoon's alright if you stay east of the river.
But the people recommending Banff and Jasper are right there, at least. Kananaskis is solid, too.

go to the mountains, ski until your faces freezes off. cause really, theres nothing here to do in calgary. our malls suck, its cold right now, our food sucks, however, our transit is cheap compared to other cities lol.
if you're passing through calgary, drop by banff and the hot springs there, or kananaskis and do a nice hike through the mountains and by upper and lower lake.

I think that's about all I can say, too.
I don't think there is anything fun to do in Canada in winter except skiiing because we got snow everywhere (well, not really, but meh).

Which is why I said "not really" in brackets
And yes Vancouver is awesome P

Maybe a quick LAN and dinner during that time perhaps? As far as your questions go ...
1. You would have to get an adapter but that's pretty much it. We have no PST here in Calgary so you'd only pay 5% tax! The benefit of living in Calgary ... lol
2. Memory Express, Future Shop, Best Buy, the usuals.

I just drove across Canada this past summer... and I gotta tell you... BC's the place to be. Northern Ontario is beautiful too but its a long way from where you are now, and the coolness is centralized in BC.
There's probably a wider selection of laptops in Vancouver
|
Everything cool is in BC, except for Montreal.
|
If you decide to come to BC there is a nice computer shop called NCIX, or if you stay in Toronto, Canada Computers is another fine choice. Other than that for $800 dollars I can't give any recommendations.
|
Staples actually tends to have some really nice deals on laptops. For reference check out my blog post a few months ago.
Other than that, yeah you'll need a transformer(I.E. adapter) for your charger. AC wall plugs here are 120V, most places in Europe are 220/240V I believe.

Nice Edmonton! West Ed. Mall is massive. Like, abnormally HUGE. You'll have fun there Come visit Vancouver if you can, its really nice.
@gaming laptop: Buy Alienware online?
|
I'm in Banff for the season working as a lifty.. Come here on a Fridag.. Heard that's when all the people from Calgary come here to drink..
Pretty quiet though, since the season haven't really startet yet.

you may find some sick deals on boxing day dec 26th but then i dont think the major stores like best buy/future shop have sick gaming laptops
|
Hey if you come to Banff send me a PM, born and raised so I know the area pretty well

Woah didn't know anyone else from TL was in town. You should hit me up too if you want the down low. But lol, usually Fridays & Calgarians isn't something the locals like too much. Bars get overcrowded as fuck and there's a 25% increase in douchebags. Usually they all stick to Auroras though so it's alright haha.

Guess what guys! I'm going to Canada in about a week! but, I'm kinda "lost". I'll stay on Calgary and Edmonton for about a month and I have no clue about what places could be interesting or amazing to visit.
I might aswell go to West Edmonton Mall since I've been told that that place is huge and pretty much great.
Man, there is almost nothing interesting to do in Edmonton or Calgary, especially if you're coming in from a place that actually has such novel things as 'culture', 'personality', and 'architecture'.
All we have to offer in this part of the world is natural beauty - and since this country is hopelessly large, endless driving in order to go and see it. Plus it's the middle of winter, making exploration a touch less enjoyable. I guess you could check out a hockey game but both the Flames and the Oilers are terrible teams that play in sold-out buildings. Yippee.
Edmonton is a particularly gross city. Dirty, slummy, boasting only the promise of franchises which haven't experienced success in decades and a goddamn mall. Calgary is gridlock traffic and white people. The road in between them is 3 hours of intense boredom that I find myself experiencing more weekends than not. If you don't ski or snowboard, you're screwed.
1) If I buy any laptop over there will I be able to use it in Europe by buying an adapter for the charger? I really don't want to get any bad surprises like having my laptop blow up once I plug it in when I come back lol
Laptop chargers will specific a voltage and current range (like 120-240V, etc.) and your local power should fall somewhere in there. You'll be fine besides requiring the adapter plug.
2) What are good stores to buy said laptop and wich one would you recommend me? I'm looking for a good gaming laptop that isn't 800+$.
The usual big-box stores sell things on the cheap. You can browse the websites to see if something suits your fancy:
http://www.futureshop.ca http://www.bestbuy.ca
So yeah that's pretty much it, I really hope that i'll enjoy my stay over there... + Show Spoiler +fighting bears and drinking maple syrup...lol j/k cheers!
I honestly hope you enjoy it too. I love this country and I love this part of the world but I've had limited success imposing that love upon other people. I guess there's always the pub.
