But most seriously, your best bet would be to get a junky desktop at a computer store, get a newer GPU, and just play it on low.

I would look into replacing hardware parts, which is normally far less expensive. The requirements for Low Graphics Setting are pretty reasonable in today's standard. If you can, list your hardware specs in the Tech Support section and ask for some suggestions in that department.

Alright. I'm going to create a build that will run it, but it will be well over your budget. By like double, I think. But still damn cheap.

Case: Scavenge or ($20) CD Drive: Scavenge (or $10) Mobo: 45 2GB RAM (20) HD 5450 (30) HDD scavenge, or 30 (160GB) PSU Scavenge, or 20 (400W) If you were a pro, and were able to scavenge the rest it would be 100-150 bucks. If you ask around you should be able to get a lot of this from friends old computers. I think this will run it fine on low, albeit we are cutting corners. If you bought everything it would be 230.

It sounds like you have more issues than having a crappy computer to play games with, which is in of a problem itself.

How does someone get these parts together? Any specific websites like Amazon, or Newegg or do people look for local computer hardware stores? I'm outta my depth here, but I'm guessing that the next trip to the nearest BestBuy isn't going to wield bargain-bin prices.

So am I, but I have a computer that does whatever I want with it. I bought out of my own pocket, as well.

Heres something similar to what I did when I was an undergrad and needed some out of budget money for sporting events or whatever. http://mit.edu/kitmitmeg/subjects.html These are all over the place in cities with research Universities. Great way to pick up some quick cash for something you can't pay for working at your regular job. Raise a quick 300 bucks because someone wanted to test the effects of alcohol on right handed smokers from a split family or some shit and you've got yourself a serviceable computer to run SC2 on.
