If you were a pro, and were able to scavenge the rest it would be 100-150 bucks. If you ask around you should be able to get a lot of this from friends old computers. I think this will run it fine on low, albeit we are cutting corners. If you bought everything it would be 230.
How does someone get these parts together? Any specific websites like Amazon, or Newegg or do people look for local computer hardware stores? I'm outta my depth here, but I'm guessing that the next trip to the nearest BestBuy isn't going to wield bargain-bin prices.
All your guesses are right. To be serious though, one can get an old computer for very very cheap.

He's a full time college student.
So am I, but I have a computer that does whatever I want with it. I bought out of my own pocket, as well.
How much is your tuition that you're paying? Maybe this guy wants to minimize student loans and debt

I don't pay for the tuition. My parents pay for all college expenses, but I'm on my own when it comes to food, electronics, travel expenses (minus the car), etc.
I make money from internet marketing, and some weird stuff like writing essays for lazy people on campus, and helping people with their homework on Skype and Teamviewer.

These are all over the place in cities with research Universities. Great way to pick up some quick cash for something you can't pay for working at your regular job. Raise a quick 300 bucks because someone wanted to test the effects of alcohol on right handed smokers from a split family or some shit and you've got yourself a serviceable computer to run SC2 on.

Some of us don't go to MIT
Hopefully I'll get in when I hear back 3/14.
@OP getting a computer for cheap can be done fairly easily if you know your way around stuff--I would suggest hopping on craigslist and checking out the free section--might be some parts you can salvage from old computers toward a new build.

Oh I didn't go to MIT. Actually went to school across the river from there. They're just one of many Universities in Boston that have active medical research departments and will pay for volunteers. Psych departments are the best because they will pay you a decent chunk of cash to record you doing normal stuff.

It sounds like this guy is paying his own rent which is probably no less than $400 which is already more expensive than all your expenses. I'm not trying to insult you or anything but you shouldn't say he has other problems when you don't know his full financial situation but I agree he should be worrying about things other than a game

3/14 9:26PM is not going to be fun
Good luck to you too! I thought MIT kind of overdid the whole Pi aspect, but the wikileaks spoof was really neat.
If you can't find salvagable parts via craigslist or what not, the place I'd try is micro center. They sell lots of parts that can be used to construct a computer.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but $400 is far less than the monthly dorm rent in-campus, and let alone other expenses. That, and I study at UCLA.
You could always install it on shared computers at the dorm. The University of Iowa and Stanford University have dorm computers that people play starcraft on (I think MIT does too).

The funny thing is that SC2 will cost more than $100 bucks by the time you buy all 3 planned parts.
My advice? Don't be putting much energy into a video game when there are much better things to do for a college student. Seems like there are plenty of other games out there that have a lot more substance than SC2. Games that you can play in your leisure time without having to connect to Bnet and have to endure some highschool dropout or whining crybaby teenager. Way too much of an investment of precious college time if you ask me.

A Gamecube+SSBM+4 controllers seems like a great time for <$100 in a college dorm.
