sigh. unfortunately i have to quit sc2 and just watch because im too poor to afford a nice desktop. so depressed right now. the only thing i can do is fourgate or my framerate goes hits 1fps. anything above 100 supply kills this laptop. so stupid that i can only get to platinum when i know i should be top diamond low masters. (played customs at friends house vs. masters and was winning almost half of them.) and i know that you can build a good destop for cheap but im a fulltime college student trying to work a job to pay the bills cause i moved out of my parents house. 100 is way too much for me to spend on myself. i get lucky to spend 20 dollars about every 2-3 months. well cant really play serously until summer when i can save to build a computer. i soo hate my life right now.

anyone got any ideas how i can get a computer to play sc2 not laggy for under 100 bucks? and before anyone says it i have my settings on low already

Either as a charity, trading stuff?

But most seriously, your best bet would be to get a junky desktop at a computer store, get a newer GPU, and just play it on low.

play brood war it runs on shitty computers
BW is still out there and a lots of people still watch it. SC2 is a different game and different people. Please go back to BW if you think sc2 is not suited for you - Dustin Browder

A whole computer?

I would look into replacing hardware parts, which is normally far less expensive. The requirements for Low Graphics Setting are pretty reasonable in today's standard. If you can, list your hardware specs in the Tech Support section and ask for some suggestions in that department.

Alright. I'm going to create a build that will run it, but it will be well over your budget. By like double, I think. But still damn cheap.

you can usually find 5-10 year old computers fully working in the electronic trash of apartments for instance. At least here in Sweden. Add a 50$ graphics card to some random brand P4 computer and it should run around 10-20 fps on low I'd presume. Also if you know anybody who works with computers, like it management of some company or government, they usually have exceed or partially malfunction computers (even if its just the cd-drive not working for example) they will have to throw away. Other than that, I can't think of a better solution but to save up somehow.

But seriously, play BW instead...

I'd say play BW. Pretty much ANY computer can run it, and if you're just going to play on private servers like ICCUP, you can get the game for free too.

Dual core processor: 55
Case: Scavenge or ($20)
CD Drive: Scavenge (or $10)
Mobo: 45
2GB RAM (20)
HD 5450 (30)
HDD scavenge, or 30 (160GB)
PSU Scavenge, or 20 (400W)

If you were a pro, and were able to scavenge the rest it would be 100-150 bucks.
If you ask around you should be able to get a lot of this from friends old computers. I think this will run it fine on low, albeit we are cutting corners. If you bought everything it would be 230.

I can second this. There are calculators that can run BW without problems.

How about you get a job (or whatever method you can think of to make money), get a decent computer, and THEN play SC2 or whatever video game you want with leisure?

It sounds like you have more issues than having a crappy computer to play games with, which is in of a problem itself.

How does someone get these parts together? Any specific websites like Amazon, or Newegg or do people look for local computer hardware stores? I'm outta my depth here, but I'm guessing that the next trip to the nearest BestBuy isn't going to wield bargain-bin prices.

So am I, but I have a computer that does whatever I want with it. I bought out of my own pocket, as well.

Pretty easy way to make money on the side as a college student in a big(ish) city is to participate in paid clinical studies and drug trials. Give blood to a research lab for 50 dollars, join a paid non-invasive study, etc. MIT paid me $90 to push buttons on a computer when I saw certain shapes while they took pictures of my brain for 3 hours. Drug studies pay even better considering the hours you put in. I've personally never been too comfortable with that, but whatever. They're supposed to be safe, and this is for e-sports for fuck sake.

Heres something similar to what I did when I was an undergrad and needed some out of budget money for sporting events or whatever.
http://mit.edu/kitmitmeg/subjects.html

These are all over the place in cities with research Universities. Great way to pick up some quick cash for something you can't pay for working at your regular job. Raise a quick 300 bucks because someone wanted to test the effects of alcohol on right handed smokers from a split family or some shit and you've got yourself a serviceable computer to run SC2 on.
