Guys, SC2 has been out for what...5 days? Of course it's going to feel like BW is dying, that's because everybody is interested in SC2 at the moment! The game (and not even the full version) literally just came out. Being a hardcore BW fan myself, even I am interested in SC2 and checking out what is new, which is all good and fine.
However, what isn't fine is all these people saying "OMG BW IS DYING I'M SO SAD!". Well if you really don't want SC2 to take over BW, then just keep playing BW! Simple as that! I'm doing both, playing BW and reading about/watching SC2.
A lot of you guys seem so READY to ditch BW. If you are then just do it! If you don't want to then don't blog about how sad you are that BW is dying. If you keep playing it it's not dying. While your flist might be a bit shorter at the moment there are still TONS of players on iccup.
And comparisons with other games are useless. Melee survived brawl, War2 didn't survive sc (from stryker's blog), etc.. There are many examples where gamers have switched over to new games or gone back.
Regardless, the answer is that the better game will be played (SC2 or BW). If SC2 ends up sucking in the long-term (not in the first week of the game being played because pure graphics and awe can sustain interest in a game for at least a good month), then many of us will probably go back to BW, great. If SC2 turns out to be amazing (which personally, I don't think is there yet due to game balance issues), then great, we will have an EVEN BETTER game than BW!
So let's drop all this depressing talk. Whatever game will be played, it will be the better one and the one that is more fun. Of course everybody will have different opinions, but a majority will eventually accumulate for which game to play and that's that!
BW is dying only for people who wish they had beta.
I'm with you pretty much all around. I love SC, and I have a hard time thinking the sequel could possibly be as good, but I'm still putting a bunch of my nerd time into checking out all the cool new stuff.
For me it's more of a "how things turn out" kind of thing. It's just the way things are, not really trying to discredit anything about SC. The fact is, similar things have happened in the past and once you start seeing warning signs, you get wary and embrace for it. Probably worse for me since I went through it once before with War2.

You and me both, I mean obviously when I get my hands on SC2 I'm going to be playing it like crazy. But there's a good chance I'll still play a little BW from time to time.
Everyone's just interested in SC2 because they've waited so long for it, and the SC2 forum is really active, which I guess gives the impression that no one is interested in BWs now? But people are still live reporting and watching games and playing on ICCUP.
I think the feeling is amplified because of light being dismantled and a couple players retiring all at the same time as the beta was announced.
BW's a great game and it's going to survive for a while, even when we're all 70 years old we'll probably still be able to dload it from Bnet and pwn our grandchildren.
Great point though that if SC2 does eventually kill BW it will be because it's the better game.
It's more for me the unknown with how things will move forward. It took ages to balance brood war. Will it take ages to balance starcraft 2?
And if starcraft 2 ends up being a flop having to move BACK to an empty shell of a community that brood war may become during the first year or so of sc2 might prove to be no easy feat. or easily possible at all and it surely won't be the same as it was even if everyone is forced to move back to bw.

and then there is actually 1 well written thread about BW being probably replaced by SC2.
Yeah, this forum is plagued.
Is it really that hard to see the general themes/thoughts? Jeez man I'm just trying to be positive, if you don't like this thread for some reason then close it.
Just kidding On topic though: there's a general theme on this forum that people are expecting way too much too soon. I mean, there's already a thread about battles being lackluster because people aren't microing enough. There's a reason for that. There's a reason why SC2 was in development since 2003 and it took 7 years to even get to the Beta stage. There's a reason why BW has remained popular for 12 years. These things take time. It will be many years before BW dies out (if it even does), many more years before SC2 is balanced, and many more after that for everyone to realize its true potential.
