They brew that shit 5-8 miles from my house. Till this day I haven't mustard up the courage to even take a sip. I've probably bought two in the passed but refrained from drinking it.
Okay to the OP. I'm going to recommend a few drinks which you might or might not like but I don't know you at all and have no idea what you prefer in alcohol taste.
Recently I have been enjoying mineral water(topo-chico/perrier) with Buchanan's Scotch Whiskey. It's not no bitch drink and you certainly will not encounter a hangover.
+ Show Spoiler +Your going to need this for sure. Then get yourself some of these.
If your more into a sweet drink and just wanna get a quick fucked up drink. Pick up some Joose. It's sold in 24oz cans only and its not like a boones farm or mad dog 20/20. I thought it tasted like Hawaiian punch soda. + Show Spoiler +
If none of these seem to tickle your fancy then fuck it just get some Crown Royal.

I guess it depends what you are after, whether you are looking to make it a memorable occasion or just to start out exploring.
Personally I would reccomend port, its a fortified red wine and tastes quite sweet and gentle. I think its a better bet than sherry and happily sits between a whiskey/brandy (which to me have always had sense of an event about them) and wine, which might taste great if you are just starting out. Port weighs in around 20% by volume which makes it stronger than wine (by 50-80 % or so) but half the strength of a spirit.
I think you can go wrong with a bottle of red/whte wine as there are a wide range of flavours, so that you might come across one you aren't so keen on, and you probably want a safe bet.
You don't need to go for a vintage port, any decent ruby or tawny will do.
If you are inclined for a bit of an event, you could buy a half bottle of sparkling white/ champange (dont buy too expensive as you'll really be just appreciate the flying cork and the bubbles)
Definately drink in moderation, try not to mix your drinks (I mean have lots of different types of drinks) and don't get too much in.
I hope you have a happy birthday!

Do not get whisky ffs, especially not good one. Whisky is the most complex alcoholic drink, it takes a lot of experience and trying and indeed skill to really appreciate the taste. Don't mix whisky either, it's simply barbaric and only serves getting drunk real fast. Generally, never mix with any soda or highly processed non alcoholic drink, the result is guaranteed to be disgusting.
How is your previous experience with alcohol? What did you like? Generally people can say whether they like beer, red wine, white wine etc. If you haven't tried any of it it will most likely taste awful the first time you try it.
If you like wine then I would say that is the obvious choice, especially since you are celebrating just with your girl, right? Get a bottle of good wine, either red or white. Usually with wine you can safely go by price - the higher the better. Good wine can even taste good to people who normally don't drink at all. Only make sure you don't buy expensive just because the wine is old, you won't appreciate the age anyway.
Another good suggestion here is Bailey's, it is very gentle, in fact you almost can't taste the alcohol at all. It is also something your girl will most likely like. You said you enjoy soju but don't like vodka, which is funny because the two drinks are almost identical. Did you have sweetened soju? That might have made the difference as usually vodka does not have sugar added. If that is the case a combination of something sweet and vodka might actually be what you are looking for. You can mix vodka with anything and everything, so go by what fruity and sweet taste you like. Go easy on the vodka as too much will make the alcohol dampen your tasting senses and all the sweetness won't matter. An alternative to vodka as the base alcohol is some sort of corn schnapps, but make sure you get a neutral tasting one (the less added the better).
If you go that route I highly recommend you try mixing with jostaberry juice unless you really don't like jostaberries (either with vodka or corn). It makes for a surprisingly well tasting combination. Don't know about the states, maybe you can find a jostaberry drink somewhere but I doubt it.
xD i never said i actually enjoy soju. Thats just the only drink i'm commonly familiar with. Not a big fan of beer, i've tried plenty kinds and find the taste to be horrible or maybe i just need to drink more to get appreciate the taste. My friend recommended smirnoffs. Are those good? And how much money would i normally need to purchase a good amount of alcohol?(Not intending to buy tons. I'm going on a 6 day trip up in San Francisco for my birthday)
|
|
What are smirnoffs? Smirnoff is a known brand of vodka, but I guess your friend is refering to smirnoff ice, that's really low on alcohol and has a sweet taste. You would need about 10 of these to get even slightly drunk.

WHITE PORTO !!!!!!!!! ( my favourite > 15°+ drink ) It is very good like a white wine but way more alcoholized ( ~ 18° ) but it still tastes sweet ( contrarily to all the 40°+ alcohols ).
Or Armagnac ( but i doubt you can find a good Armagnac for a decent price in the US lol ) one of the few 40°+ alcohols i enjoy ( with home made fruit brandys :p )
Wines are cool but expensive.
Whisky and Vodka are horrible and i only drink it when i'm or i want to be drunk because it tastes like shit ( personal taste ).
Beers are cool because you can drink a lot, control your drunkness level and it is soooooooo cheap.

I'm usually more a beer-person; of the high proof stuff I usually drink gin tonic or Jägermeister, apart from coctails; but this is all a question of personal preference and taste. Your at the perfect age for experimenting, just don't overdo it.

zatic is thoughtful, but if its your first shot with alcohol, vodka or rum is the way to go. gotta hit it a little hard, but something without a brutal taste. which is why i still stand by my reccomendation of bacardi grand melon.

White Russians are fun, and a good sipping drink. Vodka + Coffee Liquor + Creme. Quality of vodka is irrelevant, Kaluha is fine for the coffee liqueur, and whatever creme you normally use for your coffee You can put them in any ratio you want... 1:1:1 2:1:1 1:2:1 ... Obviously more coffee liquor will make it sweeter, more vodka will make it stronger. You can go heavy on the creme too if you really want, but most people don't like that.
Wine is great, but it's an acquired taste so don't bother with it. Same with spirits drunk straight. Manifesto is right when he says to get something fruity if you're drinking straight.

Grolsh is so good, heineken not so much.
