So is the current stance just that there are no longer american politics discussions on TL..? Are we allowed to make a general election thread? It's kind of unclear what is happening.

And on the minimum post length: while there are one-liner shitposters that pollute the discussion, there are also plenty of genuinely good one-line responses that add to the discussion, and plenty of long-winded shitposts from downright unpleasant posters. It's not a length issue.

You're entitled to an opinion, but there has to be a line of past ridiculous somewhere. He would have just been the first of a series of people I banned and rather than go on a rampage I thought I'd pass it to the rest of the mod staff.

I know the thread gets a little empty when people get banned a lot; but I think the quality improvement is worth it.

Personally I didn't see any one person who was clearly responsible for that low-quality discussion. There was a fair bit of shared blame in there that would probably be hard to moderate fairly.

I have been traveling and haven't kept up, so not sure what caused the lock, but the thrrad has been increasingly more like a shouting match rather than a discussion over the last few months. Stricter moderation, keeping to the 10 commandments seems good.

If you don't understand why that's a mountain of a problem then you need to leave it alone. I wouldn't want to be a mod right now for a hundred dollars.

I mostly lurk because the discussion there tends to be of pretty low quality and I honestly get sick of following repetitive, dogmatic discussions that tend to be neither insightful nor interesting. Yesterday and the day before were certainly on the poorer end of the spectrum, though nothing out of the ordinary for the US Politics thread. And on the minimum post length: while there are one-liner shitposters that pollute the discussion, there are also plenty of genuinely good one-line responses that add to the discussion, and plenty of long-winded shitposts from downright unpleasant posters. It's not a length issue. Aren't longer posts better than no posts? I just a few days ago resubbed TL+ to sort posts in that thread only to find now is the time, after hundreds of pages with a literal handful of mod actions and no mod notes, that it's boiled over so much that we stop being lazy and shut the whole thing down. If you had one line of content, you could still post it, you'd just have to add more. It's not about the specific posts, it's about what it does to the thread. What one line posts do is create a culture in the thread where it's common to misunderstand, strawman, dismiss, and try to out-snark and out-smug each other. Then someone invariably comes in and does just what he sees the other posters doing. If you type long enough, you'll eventually hit content, and it stops people from hitting the post button before thinking. I'm not remembering that many long shitposts. You are right that length per se is not the problem, it's posting badly that hurts the thread. But posting badly is probably concentrated in posting without effort. Why would people spend 20x the effort shitposting when they can do it in one line? Do you really think length isn't a factor in this, in other words, short bad posts aren't more common than long ones, they're equally bad? It's like in Battlestar Galactica. Technically, the problem is the Cylons because they want to kill everyone. But since it's impossible to genie Cylons out of existence, you have to leave the humans on sublight ships behind to get massacred. Except instead of Cylons, it's terrible posting, and instead of sublight ships, it's making a post that's shorter than your signature. Does it mean every human on every sublight ship is necessarily less competent or would contribute less to the survival of humanity than each human that you didn't leave behind to get massacred, no. But generally speaking, if you stay behind to try and save them, everybody ends up dying. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/general/383301-us-politics-mega-thread?page=4034 I mean look at this, one of the most recent pages, over half the posts don't reach 3 full lines. In fact, look at 4033, too. How is it not length? Aren't these pages what pushed Kwark over the edge? Some of these pages I'm reading filled up in like 10 and 15 minutes. My main problem with like a daily post quota is that the volume of posts in the thread changes depending on the topic and what's in the news. And if you restrict people that way, it will stretch out and fragment lines of discussion that would normally end faster. People would be be quoting things from days ago all the time and not be able to reconcile different tangents. A better way to measure that, if you wanted to do it, might be a 1-2 post per person per page limit. But I do still think minimum length is where to start. We should want to slow the rate of garbage by raising the level of effort required to post.

What one line posts do is create a culture in the thread where it's common to misunderstand, strawman, dismiss, and try to out-snark and out-smug each other. Then someone invariably comes in and does just what he sees the other posters doing. Johnny was doing it regularly, folks would write out long thoughtful posts and then Johnny would come in with some one-liner bait and then perform rhetorical gymnastics to claim what he "was really saying was...". I made the point then and that the election would make it worse and no one acted. Now here we are where precisely I'd said we'd end up back in March. There's already a "low content post" mechanism built in, seems reasonably simple to more strictly enforce it by warning more often and then following through with bans.
