If you think about it, it makes sense. The fat will just fill in the creases, no matter how huge your abs are (to a realistic point). Once you drop below a certain BF% (somewhere between 8-12% for most guys, depending on how your body distributes fat), you'll start to see a 6-pack. Once I start to see the 6-pack, then I start working my abs to make it more defined.
Contrary to what most infomercials will tell you, it doesn't really matter what you do for your abs as long as you work them, and work all of them (lower and obliques may have to be targeted specifically). I do weighted sit-ups, bicycle crunches, and leg lifts if I'm at home, and at the gym: leg raises, ab machine, and decline sit ups either with a dumbbell, or a 10kg ball to throw up at the contraction of each rep. This way I always get some high rep, low resistance, and some low rep, high resistance exercises. You can also work your obliques on a lower back 45 degree bench. You're first sentence is retarded. How do you explain a skinny person without a 6pack working out and getting a 6pack without losing any weight?
Everyone has a six pack, it's all about body fat percentage. Skinny people do have visible six packs. It's just not as eye bulging because it's most likely not that big.

I've read in a few places that you don't get a six pack by working out, but rather that you get it by being in really good shape.

All I did was swim when I was younger, every summer and in the swim/water polo team in high school, and I had a six pack without even trying. Now that college started though, I've lost it from sitting around and playing SC too much.

Half of the ab exercises you do should be weighted at no more than 10 rep capacity. If all you do is 1000 sit ups and you're actually lean enough to show abs, they'll be there but they'll be rather undefined, puny, and generally unimpressive. This is because the more ab work you do will actually put on a small amount of mass on your obliques making your abdominal section appear wider and thus flatter. In the long run this is great if you are able to bulk the rest of your abs sufficiently, you'll obtain the girdled look of say...the typical underwear model? Once you have your abs, maintenance is ez as long as you eat relatively clean and stay active..ab workouts maybe 2x a week will suffice at this point.

if you work out you'll have a bigger 6 pack obv, but for it to actually be visible, you need a low % body fat, so RUN LIKE THERE'S NO TOMOROW, and work your abs out 8)

I got a visible 6 pack by just doing some grueling ab workouts. I started training in Muay Thai and the teacher had us do medicine ball situps, where the ball is thrown over our heads and you catch it while going down, and then you must keep your arms fully extended and throw it back up to your partners head while he is standing as you come up. No set amount, just continous for like 5 minutes until you drop.
Then one of us would get on our knees and the other would sit on his back like youre riding a horse, and you would let your torso roll all the way over till you your back was curved like a crescent moon, so your head was about to touch the ground, and do a full sit up till you were perfectly up right again.
It was great.
