I thought they would for sure, since the Rochester draft originated from here after all. But instead it was everyone building their deck while keeping their cards face down. Open up a pack, take a card, and pass it around. I had a lot of fun anyways and will definitely be doing this regularly! Only cost me $15, I had a blast for five hours, got to meet people in the local MTG scene, and got to take home all the cards I played with as well as the two boosters earned from winning two rounds (though I didn't get much good cards or anything really rare - best one was Bow of Nylea probably). People there were really friendly and helpful given this was my first booster event and I'm just starting to come back to playing MTG. I want to get more involved with the local scene here and have more people to play with regularly. I really only have one friend to play with right now. I assume my local store usually has a few people playing MTG at all hours throughout the week, even without an event going on. Any suggestions other that randomly stopping in the store to find more people locally who play MTG?

"Monsters" Like mechanics like this I feel are going to be underwhelming (like Desecration Demon, people would play him as a 4 mana 6/6 flyer regardless) or overpowered where you are damned if you tribute, damned if you don't.

I really think BotG will be a good set. After temporarily leaving MTG after the Zendikar-block, the Theros-block really feels like a good place to return to the game

http://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=6371&d=236694 However, I've changed the sideboard up significantly and made a couple swaps for creatures. 8 of my sideboard cards right now are specifically to deal with UW control decks that have Sphinx Revelation, Divination, Detention Sphere, etc. However, since I'm so new to the competitive scene, I really don't know what cards I would swap out for them. Here is my deck and sideboard: Main: 4 Rakdos Cackler 4 Firedrinker Satyr 4 Ash Zealot 4 Firefist Striker 4 Fanatic of Mogis 4 Burning Tree Emissary 4 Gore-house Chainwalker 4 Lightning Strike 3 Shock 4 Dragon Mantle 1 Hammer of Purphorous 20 Mountains Side: 2 Mindsparker (UW hate) 3 Toil//Trouble (Sphinx Revelation / Divination hate) 3 Skullcrack (Life-gain / Sphinx Revelation hate) 3 Electrickery (deals with 1/1 creatures and tokens) 2 Seismic Stomp (against other creature heavy decks) 2 Act of Treason (against stompier creature decks) Sub against UW control? I'm thinking I bring in 2 Mindsparker, 3 Toil//Trouble, 3 Skullcrack and sub out 4 Dragon Mantle (tough enough to get creatures out, probably won't be able to put it on anything for the draw), but then I'm not sure what else I would sub out? I'm also open to changes in my main deck and sideboard (I really want to put in Chandra's Phoenix, but I won't be getting that card for a few more days - ordered online). edit: I think it's clear 4 Firefist Striker should be the other sub, duh. I likely won't be able to keep 2 other creatures around on the field long enough against this deck to make him useful. So my gameplan against the deck: Start Mulligan if I don't get a hand with at least 2 lands and 2 creatures. (Risky?) Pump out creatures quickly. Hold onto Skullcrack and Toil//Trouble for the big life-gain play When he has at least 7 mana, if I have Skullcrack, keep 2 mana untapped in case he casts Sphinx Revelation. (Ideally Skullcrack then to prevent the life-gain and deal 3, then Toil//Trouble to blast him for 7 more)

So game breakdown with my RDW deck at my first Standard Tournament: Round 1: vs Bigger Red Deck I didn't have anything in my sideboard for the mirror match, like Peak Eruption or ah... forget the card... a +2+2 and gain mountain-walk enchantment. 1st Game: Started off well with my aggro creatures coming out and swinging fast. But he had a turn 3 reckoner, followed shortly after by a Chandra planeswalker and Stormbreath Dragon. I had nothing to deal with the dragon so was eating 4 every turn. He did Chained to Rocks on my Ash Zealot and Fanatic of Mogis. I just got overwhelmed and lost board control by turn 7 or so and it was game over then. 2nd Game: I sideboarded in some Seismic Stomps and Skullcracks to avoid his creatures and deal damage easier. This game was a lot closer. I had board control for the first 5 turns and was pumping out creatures like crazy. However, that was a big part of my downfall - he sideboarded in Anger of Gods and got a 5 for 1. Ouch. I ended up with 4 mountains on board, 2 Fanatic Mogis and 2 Seismic Stomps in hand. All I did the next two turns was Fanatic for 1 damage, then he Chained to Rocks my Fanatic - and then next turn cast another Fanatic Mogis. He was down to 4 life but I couldn't keep up as his bigger red creatures overran me. Round 2: vs Mono-blue devotion: I lost abysmally 0-2 here. I've been out of the loop so long I didn't even know what Master of the Waves or Nightveil Specter did. In game one I misread the board when he has 6 +3+4 elementals out and attacked into them losing 3 of my creatures. That was the dumbest play I have ever made for sure. 2nd game I tried subbing in Electrickery to deal with the tokens and Mindsparker to deal with some of his blue spells. Didn't matter, he ended up with 2 Nightveil Specters and it was just game over. At the end of the game I asked him for some constructive feedback on how Red decks can deal with his deck. He said I need to kill him before he gets Master of Waves out otherwise it's pretty much over. Maybe Anger of the Gods... Mizzium Mortars overload cost would take too long to get to. Not sure how to deal with his deck really. Ending Thoughts I was pretty bummed out that the 3rd person didn't just want to play for fun anyways. I really want more experience playing against different decks. Meh. My friend there was bummed out losing with his UW Control deck that I overprepared my sideboard for, losing to two aggro decks, that he didn't even want to play me afterwards. It's tough to make new MTG friends. I end up coming early to tournaments and sitting at a table play testing some of my decks and everyone just sticks with their group of friends. I think I just need to be more proactive in asking people to play rather than hoping someone sits and wants to play vs me. Ah well... it was a fun few hours for only $5. (Sorry this post seems more blog-worthy I guess)
