Cost 1 too much. Good enough to play, not good enough to play around.

That being said, I think the 5 damage giant is fairly powerful in draft and I don't think the mechanic is not a total bust.

I dont know if it costs 1 too much. It's a strictly better Chandra's phoenix imo. 1 more power and toughness and when it dies it goes to your hand without needing to hit them with a spell. Plus if they really are on the backfoot it is a 5/5 flying blocker for 4, seems ok to me. Yea I can see games where you draw this and need the haste but they give it +2/+2 and you lose because you cant alpha but you'll play this card regardless of that.

I like the tribute mechanic, they're coming out with some good stuff.

I should have wrote more. I just meant 1RR would, clearly, make this card a mono-red staple and maybe even a cube card. 2RR makes it a fringier player. I don't know if it's that much better than Chandra's Phoenix. In limited, it's pretty awesome.

I hate to be that guy, but after you pay the tribute, it dies to Doom Blade, Ultimate Price, Hero's Downfall, AND Supreme Verdict.. If it cost 3 it'd be a lot better because you'd either cost them effectively their whole turn dealing with it or get in a bunch of damage. Instead, it comes out to where, even if you're on the play, they verdict next turn and it does nothing, or they Doom Blade and play a 2 CMC spell. The only thing that doesn't trade mana efficiently is Downfall in that situation.

If it cost 3 and they were relying on verdict, you'd get in at least 4 damage and get it back after the verdict, or 5 damage and that's probably good enough for a 4 mana spell.

Tribute is awesome in draft, and I think it's good enough to cause a shift from aggro to midrange, but it won't be awesome.

That card also makes your lines against Charm, Obedience and other cards worse.

Same thing as i said with the giant green monster. If is the sort of card that makes you win harder if your already winning but considering the dominance of mono black and the amount of removal it runs they just pay the tribute and kill it end of turn.

So I'm going to a Scars of Mirrodin draft and since I know nothing about that set, what should I expect.

What cards are must-picks?

Re: Phoenix

It's definitely constructed playable, but not insane. Remember that it's just a 5/5 flyer for 4 with a drawback, and it doesn't have haste, so it's not clear how it compares to something like Stormbreath Dragon. It can definitely be valuable to top your curve at 4 and cut lands in some decks.

Ummm...in my opinion Scars block is the worst limited set in Magic history, at least since Tempest. Nobody that I know would ever willingly do a throwback draft of it. I assume you're drafting with the full block and opening NPH first?

Infect is pretty strong, but in a throwback draft, you can expect people to force gimmick strategies pretty aggressively, so if I were you I'd just try to draft strong U/B or U/G value cards and removal. The aggro decks like white weenie and metalcraft are difficult to draft if you don't know the format, because many of the good cards look very bad, and vice versa.

Just Scars or mirrodin, not the whole block (at least, when I talked to my friends who's working at my LGS)

I think its best in the RG decks or maybe Big Red if something like that ever pops up in this cycle. 5/5 does mean it wins most creature match ups.

Also how does the tribute mechanic work? Does the creature come into the battlefield with those counters or is it a trigger EtB?

It comes in with them on it. "when this creature enters" is an ETB. "as it enters" is a replacement effect.

Hm. Flame-wreath Phoenix might have applications in Modern Jund Mirrors? Evasion and being able to dodge Lightning Bolt no matter what is pretty good.

That was my thought too, its best in mid range creature mirrors.

In that case, it's undoubtedly the worst limited format ever. Just don't play. Seriously. The whole format is just broken infect cards and silly bombs.

I remember that format, when a 4 mana cantrip removal spell on a 1/1 mana myr was a good play, I wonder....

Anyways, this I recently found out. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/fox-bring-magic-gathering-big-670529

Edit:

The comments are indicative of the reason why I would never watch a movie, let alone some kind of franchise about MtG.

People are saying that you can Lightning Bolt it in response to the tribute trigger. Is this true?

Nope, I asked my question earlier for that intended purpose. Tribute decision is made I assume is made before the creature ever enters the battlefield, so the Phoenix would hit the field as a 5/5 if the Tribute was paid and thus giving no opportunity for the Bolt to kill it.

I am sure the judges and pseudo-judges (not mocking you guys) can explain it better than me.

It's the format where you can attack multiple times with Wurmcoil Engine and still lose to a goddamned Plague Stinger.

Because your Wurmcoil Engine is a 1/1 trololol.
