So, getting back into magic. I have a ginormous order on TCGplayer of probably every cheap card I will ever need. ( Ancient Grudge, duress, mulldrifter, Elvish Visionary, loam lion, delver, mortify, lots of Charms, etc etc) Just simple stuff that works in lots of decks.
Is there some interesting, multipurpose cards (cheap!) that I may have missed? I think I hit the obvious useful commons. What I'm looking for is stuff like Fleetfoot Panther / Winged coatl - solid, useful cards that aren't seen too often, that I may not know of.
In a similar vein, I'm also looking for cheaper versions of expensive cards - ex: Duress vs Thoughtseize.

Its the cheapest card in the Power 10.

Basically this.

oh. budget Modern, mostly. But my friend has a Modern Devotion to Gary deck that's really nasty (and is building an affinity deck), so I'm trying to be at least semi-competitive.

Just build Living End without the fetches, it's under $80, cheaper if you have the standard shocklands.

i'd rather have multiple useful cards than a single deck made out of a bunch of jank cards which can only ever be used in that particular deck. Plus, i have an irrational hatred for cascade.

Uh, there's really nothing too cheap. I don't know what's the point of building a semi competitive deck but having scattered cards that won't really build a deck to accomplish the former.

It's about end goals.
Do you want to FNM competitively each week with only 1-2 deck choices or play a bunch of theme filled low tier decks?

I don't really care for netdecking (I found zero satisfaction in winning with someone else's deck). I play with friends in between Burgers&Brew and SmashBros. We like to tinker with decks a lot. If we all had just one deck, and if we played the same match-ups all the time, magic would get boring for us fast.
Plus, whenever I go to FNM I only draft/EDH.

Umm, Affinity and a Devotion deck (which if nothing else is probably under-explored in Modern). So not sure where you are getting casual from in your original post.

Kiora from DotP is in Born of the Gods, thoughts?
Kiora, the Crashing Wave 2GU
2 starting loyalty
+1: Until your next turn, prevent all damage that would be dealt to and dealt by target permanent an opponent controls. -1: Draw a card. You may play an additional land this turn. -5: You get an emblem with "At the beginning of your end step, put a 9/9 blue Kraken creature token onto the battlefield."

It seems really bad to me, at least as long as haste is a thing. UG doesn't traditionally have a lot of instants or ways to control the board, and this planeswalker doesn't have the kind of immediate impact necessary to make up for that.

In Modern it'll die almost immediately to Lightning Bolt, Lightning Helix or some other spell and her -1 is underwhelming since any deck that wants this effect can just play Explore (and the only deck I can think of is RG Tron which can't even play this). And if you -1 you get blown out by Electrolyze so... still not good. And can't think of any application in Legacy right now. (Maybe it's a super janky sideboard card against TNN decks?)
Seems like something more focused for EDH probably. I don't follow Standard so I comment on that, but if Ral Zerek isn't seeing play (is he?) then this probably won't either.

She's a double explore in the sideboard against control, that's really, really good for UG. She's so terrible against aggro she's not going to see maindeck play.
|
if you get her to stick, she's an answer to Blood Baron, althought a weak one.
|
She is actually quite useful in a Maze's End control deck or turbofog deck. Getting the extra lands out really accelerates your win.

Terminate, Blightning, Putrefy, sundering growth, explore, farseek, goblin bushwhacker, goblin electromancer, goblin runeblaster. Blade Splicer, Wall of Omens, Solemn Simulacrum, acidic slime, oblivion ring, phyrexian metamorph, celestial purge, flashfreeze, timely reinforcements, arc trail, mana tithe, sunlance, tidehollow sculler, vampire nighthawk, gatekeeper of malakir, Kuldotha forgemaster, stormblood berserker, molten rain, leave no trace, wear//tear, tragic slip, smallpox, everflowing chalice, sphere of the suns, signets, condemn.
I'm sure there's a lot more cheap cards, I just thought of ones that I remember playing myself in any format or seeing in deck lists.
