I really like episodic-leaning shows with an emphasis on non-linear character backstory (although having some sort of story arc helps bind it together)
1. Cowblitz BeepBoop (the Blitzstar show) 2. Baccano! 3. Durarara!
For existential questions/psychological (also lots of killing :D)
1. Black Lagoon 2. Monster
I also like big robots:
1. Eureka 7 2. Gurren Lagann 3. FLCL
I also like lesbian robots:
1. Kannazuki no miko
Kind of overrated, but for the mindfucks:
1. NGE 2. Code Geass
Comedy:
1. Gintama 2. Golgo 13

i only watch romance/drama/slice of life anime so i feel out of place in this thread lol.

Also, I love the Naver comics. Really hoping the guy who does Wake Up Deadman and a Fairytale for the Demon Lord starts writing again. SAO was... uh, I thought it was overall pretty meh. I mean, the art is great, and single segments go from classic to great, but when putting it all together it really feels rather weak, and the ending was somewhat underwhelming too.
Also I generally dislike Harry Potter books from the first to the last page, from "readable but not worth my time why am I reading this rather than the Pratchett on my shelf" to cringe-worthy. I'll read the 7th one day though, just so I can criticise it while knowing what I'm talking about. I get into slice of life stuff rather easily but that's because my mind is weak, gotta get stronger.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is the best anime.
THE BEST.
Seriously though, it feels legitimately character-driven while having an awesome plot, and the ending is perfect. I'm a person that pays a lot of attention to storytelling (seriously, if you're at all interesting in storytelling, and have the time, READ THIS note: long but worth it), and I feel this one holds up on just about every level. Plus, for an anime about school-age girls, it never falls into that exploitation stuff that makes a lot of that anime feel kinda icky... it's sad that that's something to comment on, but there it is.

I'm a sucker for dark sad stories with a bit of hopeless romance thrown in.
I also like stuffed animals. I am also single.
DON'T JUDGE ME.

I saw SAO and thought you were going to mention Sword Art Online. Which, btw, wasn't a bad anime. Kinda slowed down towards the end, and that second arc was definitely not as good as the first. Either way, decent anime and interesting theory(kinda). I think it could have been a lot more dark, and been just as good. Not enough deaths.

I watch/read all types of stuff, so recommend away! Stuff like Tatami Galaxy, Natsume Yuujinchou, Mushishi is interesting with a bit of slice of life involved.

If we're doing recommendations, I thought the movie Perfect Blue was really well done and exactly the kind of story that tells best animated. It's about a Idol of some kind being stalked and maybe going crazy (maybe not, that's the thing with crazy!) It does have scene of a scene of a rape (movies about making movies) which was... inappropriate for me regardless of age, but is part of the movie and not animated T&A.

Reading KS right now, what should I say? :<
But it's 'k, most of the time is spent having Lysteria re-read it at the same time and when discussing it we end up mostly trash-talking the protagonist (or he mocks me for landing the bad end thrice before I got a route).
|
If we're doing recommendations we should talk about Visual Novels ;D
Currently reading Aiyoku no Eustia, it's been incredible although it's a bit difficult reading the VN machine translated as it doesn't have a full translation(knowing a bit of japanese helps and I think I've understood the general idea pretty well anyway). I love the setting, it's so far from the usual happiness and friendship and other cliche things most animes are all about. It's definitely the most interesting VN I've recently read, up there with Rewrite(which is incredibly amazing, recommend to anyone).
A manga based on the VN started last year although it's still very incomplete: http://www.mangahere.com/manga/aiyoku_no_eustia/c001/
I think the manga is really good as well.
Wow people still are hype around Katawa Shoujo? >< Come on
|
Because the part of Umineko I was re-reading while TL LoL spammed the hell out of KS discussions is pretty boring, plus it's a horrible game that's too busy toying around with your brain and making you dance in its palm to allow you to actually trash talk its characters.
Which is totally a reason for anyone here to read it. And don't go near the anime, it doesn't pay it homage.

I totally understand the people that don't like Katawa Shoujo, especially when compared with other, more high quality visual novels, but everyone here who DOES like Katawa Shoujo holds it in such high esteem because of the emotional impact the game can have on you. I had a friend who at first played it like it was jsut a visual novel, and was talking with us on Skype while he read it, and just didn't care for it at all because of the lack of options and not really caring about any of the characters. I told him to give it a try at night without any human contact, just him and KS. The guy comes out a few days later a totally changed man. I think a lot of people here have had that deep period where they forget about the real world, and come out and see everything in a totally different light. That's why it holds such a special place in my (and others') hearts.

You gotta learn to quit while you're ahead. I'm basically the same here. I watched the first season and loved it, saw the first few episodes of the second and it didn't do much for me. I watched the real ending to know how it all wrapped up and now I just pretend that the end of season one is the actual end.

That's also pretty much all the anime I've watched. I watched Ergo Proxy because it was on that list but wow was that ever some garbage. Death Note (first season) and Code Geass are tied for my top anime. I will add here that I haven't really watched too much anime, so there are probably better ones out there that I haven't seen.
