BNW is pretty easy if you can survive the first 100 turns, either go batshit crazy with blitzkrieg or battleship naval superiority because the AI is bad at war.
OR if you are somewhat isolated you can just win SV or DW without doing anything

This kind of comment really irks me because it basically says "you're wrong but I'm not going to contribute to the discussion at all". Honestly I'm tempted to post it in H&F simply to see what happens since you seem to be so adverse to the idea but didn't want to enlighten me yourself. Instead I'll probably do more of my own research and who knows if I'll actually come to the same conclusion as you have.

Because your original post is something I'd probably read in Men's Health and laugh my ass off.

Intensive heavy lifting burns more than cardio in the same timeframe but Cardio still burns and yeah I do cardio myself but at the end of the day 80% is still dieting and 20% lifting/cardio. This running in the morning on empty stomach thing burning more fat is

1. About as old as this supposed "burning zone" you enter after 20min of cardio where you only start burning.
2. Even if it was true, the difference would be so neglectable that people are better off running after having a light meal and stick to HIIT instead of long, same pace runs if the goal is to lose weight.

Move over TLHF, make way for TLLOLOT

But yeah, he's right (even if he said it in a mean way). Cardio doesn't actually help you lose weight that much. It has obvious health benefits like lowering blood pressure and so forth, but it is not actually much more effective than lifting or other intensive exercise for losing weight. It burns calories, but not much more than other activities. Losing weight/ gaining weight is based simply on calories in versus calories out.

Also, since doing lots of cardio basically requires you to be in good shape (to have already done cardio), its easy to see why people give up without progress. They run, start wheezing after like ten minutes. Ten minutes of running, ten minutes of burning calories. Or, you could probably go lift weights for half an hour and end up real sore, but you'll have spent a half hour burning calories instead.

I used to run track, and I stayed thin despite eating massive amounts. That's not because I ran track, its because I ran track for a couple hours each day.

idk, doesn't hurt to explain why people are wrong. In this case, I don't know any better either. @_@

Yeah the only reason you want to run without eating is if you're training for a marathon/ultrarace. You train the fatburning metabolism, which you need at the ~35k mark. Running in the morning without being an advanced runner gets you nowhere. If you want to lose weight, just run after a light meal. It's way more enjoyable, too. That being said, I'm not a marathon runner so I only read about this.

From googling for about an hour I'm still getting conflicting information. There are a million muscle fad websites which propose this or that and the one actual study I found was from a year ago and suggested that while strength training is probably an important part of being healthy and keeping weight off it wasn't as effective as cardio for initial weight loss in overweight 50 year olds. As for the validity of my contribution it seemed pretty fizzled.

IMO this stuff is complicated and it's no wonder people get confused.

I am under the impression that cardio is required to get in shape if you are talking about someone not in shape progressing up to being athletic.

can't lift all day with weak lungs and heart?

Well we were discussing fat burn and weight loss specifically. In terms of health and getting in shape pretty much everyone agrees on a combination of cardio/strength training but they'll all have different better ways for you to do your training.

I also thought the 20 min of cardio was a relative time frame to using the energy readily available before moving on to your body needing to burn fat.

People committed to cardio are also more likely to retain exercise.

So the correlation is that if you can build a cardio habit, or you're just a masochist cyclist/runner then that is better in the long run.

But for the same reason, you could be doing strength building an anaerobic stuff when you're 50 as well (there's definitely old dudes at my gym that lift more than me).

The great thing about anaerobic exercise is that if you are out of shape and have terrible cardiovascular health, you can still do the exercises at decent amounts to make progress.

That's pretty much a myth. Calories output is calorie output, and if you burn 100 calories running for 20 mins you could probably also burn it lifting for 20 mins. Obviously your calorie output is 0 if you exhaust your muscles on weights before you've burnt through readily available energy sources (blood sugar, glycogen, w/e) but running a mile burns off the calories of like a mint.
