I know that feel bro. Until I moved closer to the city, 90% of my restaurants were burgers, Italian/pizza, or steaks. Look, I'm like 9/10ths Italian, but I get tired of pasta and beef sometimes too -.-

My city, and many others offer small garden patches for rent if you live in an apartment.

Speaking of cultural food, it's funny... I know a lot about Japanese food, and I'm also just starting to learn about Chinese food (there is so much good Chinese food that, prior to this year, I didn't even know existed)... but in the end my favorite foods are still burgers and pizza. You can just do so much with them. And the thing that hurts the most is that I think really good bread can make or break the burger, and I've never found really good bread that I can use for burgers at home. The best I've found was the brioche bun from La Boulange, but I can't find it anymore. Supermarket tomatoes are only red because they're gassed with additional ethylene, which is why the inside is usually pale. A garden fresh tomato is much more red and it comes through in the taste. You can also just buy tomatoes from the farmer's market. And it is tomato season...

Still having a problem with the dogs eating the strawberries though. Didn't think dogs were into fruit. I was wrong.

Herb gardens can be grown in windows. I particularly like basil, thyme and rosemary. Plus, they smell amazing.

Banh mi tiet, pho, eggrolls, rice dishes, vermicelli, etcetc are all good, no weird or exotic tastes. Any viet place worth their salt offers BBH. Pho in a lot of places is made with like MSG and instant bouillon rather than being stewed from bones, since it's become like an American fad the same way Orange chicken is "chinese" food. I'm not trying to be a food snob and say you should only eat "authentic" viet food, since my grandparents would probably kill me if they knew I liked orange chicken. But I don't really need to go to a restaurant to eat MSG when there's shin ramyun. So find a place that offers BBH, with the pork blood and knuckle, and then order the pho there and it will be top notch.
