It's one thing if you have Sphinx's in your deck, but SR isn't even that good right now, so there's like 0 incentive to run that card. Nobody ever ran Augurs to fetch Charms/Twices.
Agree with the Farseek though.
Ratchet Bomb is just better than Augur simply because Augur doesn't do anything of value sadly. I had 4 in my BUG, went to 0 as of now. Just ain't worth it. In that case, compare to Azorius Charm, which is basically the other 2 drop. Having played Augur in some lists, its ability was paraphrased to 'look at the bottom 3 cards of your library,' but I was not sure if it was just not playing the right lists that caused it to fail so often.. I just don't see ratchet bomb being better than a Verdict against 2-drops. It's fine against Advent/Voice tokens, but those are the more midrange decks.
Obviously, but I am talking about decks without the ability to make WW.

Some of it is accurate. One thing he is wrong about though, 4 round sealed Release events are limited events with high EV. They pay out 13 packs for 4-0, 8 packs for 3-1 and 3 packs for 2-2 and the cards usually have good value during the release period. I always play Magic Online during release time even if I don't play magic at all inbetween. It's usually very profitable and I get to keep some cards for my collection in case I want to play at any point. Don't play pre-release events for profit, they are really really bad for payouts, but you can feel free to play them for fun if you have $.
You basically want to stick to constructed daily events and release events when they are available.
I don't like the 8 mans or 2 mans either, I like Premier Events with low # of players. I will usually play in the Block PEs and such with 33-45 players. Once they add another round, I usually don't bother. I have a good record of making top 8 in the PEs so this works for me, but I don't play in them that often at all and Standard usually has too many people/rounds for it to be worth it. The payouts remain the same regardless of players signed up.

Would it be a good idea to start playing now? Anybody would want to mentor me :D

Anytime is a good time to play, We have a good group of guys(people) here who know a lot about the game(Much more than myself) who are normally very good about helping new players.

I mean the best way to learn is by trial and error. It's more useful for you to take a step back at times and evaluate yourself and your perspective on cards for a given format.
There's really no bad time to start playing except there's a worse (relative term not absolute) time to start investing monetarily in the game. Right now would be one of those, except you want the shock lands from Ravanica block since if you ever decide to continue playing in more Eternal formats, you will have the land base.
There's no bad time to start learning, so feel free to try it. There are various free programs to practice/test without spending any money. If you don't like those, those Duel of the Planeswalker games on Steam are a very good place to start learning the basic framework of the game without being overwhelmed.
Side note: Also, we (meaning the regulars) should compose a beginner's guide of getting into the game, Fawkes isn't the first person to ask for help getting started in the game and certainly won't be the last. So instead of repeating ourselves. We can just point them to the OP which a mod like MoonBear can edit in this stuff.

After I get my account for $10, what would one do? I know how to play the game reasonably, I just am new to the Online aspect of it. I just want to get as much entertainment value per $$$ I spend on this as much as possible.

I always recommend that new players consider the pauper (commons only) format. You can put together a competitive deck for about 10tix. The downside of the format is that there isn't a huge variety of archetypes.
On an unrelated note, some big new rule changes were just announced.

Legendary permanents (and planeswalkers) no longer annihilate each other, however each player can still only have one of a given legend in play at any time.
Some changes to extra lands, unblockable and sideboarding too.

Is this just the creation of a pauper deck to play casually or are there things I can pay to enter like tourneys to win stuff?

Most are fine and improvements, just, on a selfish note I don't like the legendary rulings change, cloning her was the most common way for me to kill an olivia

Mox Opal just became very good.

Thoughts on Thespian Depths? I guess it's banned in modern, so legacy potential? Hard to interact with this one, unlike Hexmage.
Flagstones of Trokair also far better now.

So you can no longer play more than 2 lands in one turn? Regardless of permanents allowing you to play more?

Nah, unless I horribly misread this, you will be able to play 3 lands if you have 2 Oracles in play. Basically any time you try to play a land, you check if you are allowed to play another land right now. If you have 2 oracles, you have 1 normal land play and 2 from the oracles. Casting 4 Explore will allow you to play 5 lands by granting you 4 additional land plays for the turn.
Fastbond probably gets the meaning of "you get an infinite number of landplays" or some nonsense like that lol. Gaea's Touch seems a bit weird in this context as well, since I guess it means there has to be a "forest-only land play" instead of the normal "land play".

Ugh. This rules change almost confirms the legends-based set of theros for me. One of the biggest gripes about Kamigawa was that legend ruling things out of play by the opponent was annoying. Even more so with Kokusho shenanigans.
This also has massive EDH implications since all the Voltron commanders just got better.
|
Who in their right mind would pacifism a Teysa anyway ...
But seriously this will make EDH a nightmare how are you supposed to kill voltron commanders without clones :< not every colour can run merciless eviction and final judgment

Legendary rule brought into line with other popular CCgs (such as Legend of the Five Rings). I think it's fine. Never played EDH though

I just started playing magic a few weeks ago.
I started with MTGO about one week ago. First I did the new player tournaments, and between the few boosters I won (I think 2 out of 4 events) and the cards you get for signing up, I had enough m13 to justify doing more m13. I've been doing some 3 booster draft swiss (m13) and accumulating m13 cards. I'm now about half a dozen cards away from completing the set, at which point I plan to redeem for physical cards.
I only realized yesterday that you can pick up boosters much cheaper from bots than from the store lol... I was paying 3.99 when you can get them for 2.60 from bots. By the way, why are Return to Ravnica boosters more expensive than m13, gatecrash, etc?
Any other tips for a new player?
edit: cards I still need:
