How much money have you spent so far approximately?

I assume you mean online? Because I also bought some physical stuff and play with a couple of friends on the weekend.

I spend the 10 to get started, about 10-12 on entry fees, about 25-30 on individual cards for completing the m13 set, and maybe 32 or so on boosters for entering tourneys (would have been more if I didn't win boosters sometimes, obviously).

Yeah I did. I'm still in a dilemma cuz I don't know what to do. I play physically, spent like several hundred so far on the game. But can't always meet up and play, and want to kill time to play online but then that requires another investment >.<'

I started with MTGO about one week ago. First I did the new player tournaments, and between the few boosters I won (I think 2 out of 4 events) and the cards you get for signing up, I had enough m13 to justify doing more m13. I've been doing some 3 booster draft swiss (m13) and accumulating m13 cards. I'm now about half a dozen cards away from completing the set, at which point I plan to redeem for physical cards.

Hm. If you want to play physical it might just be cheaper to buy physical cards instead. When you redeem an entire set you get a lot of junk that you probably won't want to use. But then again, I don't have a lot of storage space and I tend to know exactly what I need. If you find it fun going through the whole process and redeeming an entire set please don't let me stop you!

I only realized yesterday that you can pick up boosters much cheaper from bots than from the store lol... I was paying 3.99 when you can get them for 2.60 from bots. By the way, why are Return to Ravnica boosters more expensive than m13, gatecrash, etc?

Each set has different cards which are in different demand. Return to Ravnica has some really good and very popular cards like Sphinx's Revelation, Deathrite Shaman, Supreme Verdict and Shocklands (the rare dual colour lands) which drives up the price.

I've been enjoying accumulating the m13's, and now I'm almost done. I'm debating if I will do it for Ravnica as well. Starting with Gatecrash the redemption fee is much larger which kinda discourages you from getting the cards electronically over just getting them IRL.

The other advantage of playing online is it's giving me valuable draft experience so I can manage okay if I go play in an event at a local game store. The hardest part for me right now is knowing how best to choose cards when drafting... I guess that takes time/experience.

Could you explain that one? Don't really see how it is going to make a difference as you're only able to control one at a time.
The way I play with two mox in hand right now is tap for mana, sac for arcbound ravager then cast second one.
Or you mean in case of mirror affinity?

Anyway, on a completely unrelated note, I just saw they revealed a few more card for modern masters and Dark Confidant is one of them! Really eager to try a draft with this set!

You don't need Ravager as a sac outlet any more which means you can probably go up to 4 Opals without worrying now (possibly dropping Springleaf Drum to 3?) and yes it does help in the mirror now. Fast mana acceleration also means you might be able to eek out Tezzeret by turn 1 even? Hm. Also, free mana is just begging to be abused in some kind of combo but not sure how.

The way it works now is that when you have 2 legendaries you have to select one to sacrifice. Thus with mox opals this is how it would work:

Opal - tap for mana
Play new opal
Sack tapped Opal
New Opal - tap for mana

Rinse and repeat. Its somewhat like those spirit guide cards now if you have multiple opals, and you could probably squeeze out some 4drop turn 1 if you are lucky.

Mox Opal needs metalcraft, lets not get too far ahead of ourselves now. Definitely worth exploring.

Ornithopter, Darksteel Citadel, Mox Opal for U (since it triggers its own Metalcraft), Mox Opal for B, Mox Opal for something else, Turn 1 Tezzeret.

It feels almost like Legacy UB Planeswalker Ramp lol.

I have been thinking about playing magic and from what little i know about the rotating format I should wait until M14 comes out in like 2 months or just jump right in?

I've got a question, I have a high tide (really old version using palichron) that I'm thinking of selling, and I was wondering what's the usual price range for the entire deck? The quality of the cards are still in good shape.

My suggestion is to get the 10 dollar game on steam so you can learn the basics of how to play and whatnot. Nothing wrong with waiting for the next iteration before spending money on physical cards, but waiting until they come out to first start learning might be an inefficient use of your time.

AFAIK the m14 cards will not be valid any longer than the current block will for standard play, however (Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, Dragon's Maze). Someone with more experience can weigh in if I'm off.

It honestly depends on what kind of Magic you want to play. if you're interested in playing standard, the cards from Return to Ravnica block are gonna be used. If you're interested in legacy or modern, the cards mostly are out there, so it's best to start now. If you are new to the game though, M14 is a great starting point, since it will have fewer mechanics to know and there's helper text as well.

edit: saw Micronesia's post, standard is the most two recent blocks, and the most recent core set. M14 will come out early summer. At the start of the summer, the legal standard cards will be innistrad block, return to Ravnica block, and M14, but after the first set in fall comes out, innistrad will be out, and the new set will be in. M14 will be legal til M15 comes out

Heya guys and girls, so will be wanting to play standard gameday this w/e, but I am also looking to build a cheap deck out of scraps, as I am pretty low on cards atm, selling off most non ravnica block cards. So I would like suggestions for this list Thanks in advance

29 Creatures:
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Diregraf Ghoul
4 Knight of Infamy
4 Spike Jester
2 Thrillkill Assassin
4 Dreg Mangler
3 Geralf's Messenger
4 Falkenrath Aristocrat

11 Spells:
3 Rancor
3 Victim of Night
3 Pillar of Flame
2 Searing Spear

23 Lands:
4 R/B Shock
4 R/B Tap
4 G/B Shock
3 G/B Tap
7 Swamp
1 Mountain

Yes I know it is more than 60, so help me cut stuff :D not sure about cacklers, not sure about diregraf ghouls at all (isn't really zombies any more), considering stromkirk etc. Sideboard will have deathrite, duress, appetite for brains, vampire nighthawks and the like. But yeah, keep in mind it should just be a very aggro jund deck, without getting into crazy expensive cards, as I am working on getting a completely different deck for post block rotation anyway

I believe M13 and M14 will both be legal from M14's release until the next release a couple of month's later when the next block starts.

This is probably the worst time to invest into standard since half of the format (4 sets) will no longer be legal as of October of this year.

Doesn't that happen every year? It would just be bad to specifically invest in the Innistrad block. Ravnica still has a while.

If you know when the best times are to sell/buy, you really can buy in anytime, just make sure you part way with your rotating cards before it's too late(those with modern or legacy play will retain their value, so something like snapcaster mage probably won't drop off that much tbh) . You will have losses by selling/buying but you can keep them from being too substantial. And it's a good place to test.

For getting in to Magic Online...
If your in for the LONG haul and don't want to play in order to test standard/modern online anytime soon and just want to play, spending very small amounts of money the strategy of playing Block Constructed, if your trying to build a collection from scratch and have time to play daily events, then playing a TON of Theros release sealed events, then Theros block constructed daily events is a good way too accumulate cards as well as tickets. After Born of the Gods comes out play more release events + block, then Journey to Nyx same thing. Then when Return to Ravinca rotates out you can start with the new block and repeat the same process, but you will also have standard cards as well. However, this process won't allow you to play standard until the fall of 2014.... so yeah... It's fine to invest in to a standard(with lots of ravinca cards and few innistrad cards optimally, search through the competitive decklists and find one that meets those requirements)/ravinca block deck now, (something that has a lot of cards useful in both is perfect, like Sphinx Revelation control in both, or some kind of aggro deck in the same colors in both, maybe a Domri Rade deck or something, I'm making stuff up). Then you can play both formats, and then when Innistrad rotates out hopefully your decks can translate well to the next standard with Theros block(you hopefully ditched your Innistrad cards by this point)

I originally built up my online collection using this method. I played Alara Block and that was it, and then when Lorwyn rotated out I was able to play standard as well as the new block constructed.

Having a nice disposable income is honestly the best way to play Magic Online, just avoid buying random decks to try them then reselling them. Buying a deck to play with it for a period of time, getting good use out of it then selling it for a slight loss isn't that bad at all as long as you have the $ to do those things. And you can play limited much easier since the losses won't sting as bad.

Buying in to paper magic someone else will have to help people with, I've never done it. Have always borrowed then earned cards through winning credit . When I was 12-13 I had my own collection but it was cause I was spoiled not because I had some formula for buying into Magic.
