Welcome to TeamLiquid. This thread will help you get the most out of your stay. Please read it, and if you have any questions, PM a moderator.
Introduction
TeamLiquid is a private site created in 2002 by Liquid`Nazgul and Liquid`Meat. Since then, it has grown to become the premiere English BroodWar site on the internet. There is a great deal of information on this site, and more is always being added by a core of valuable members. We have more than 20,000 people visit on a daily basis, and more than 45,000 registered users.
Rules and Guidelines
Imagine your friend invites you to somebody's house for dinner. You would probably be polite right? Then, once you got to know people you relax a little bit. TeamLiquid is just like that. If you are new, show respect, be polite, and have something to contribute. There are many people here who have been visiting this house for a long time. Respect that too. If you have been to dinner before, show the new person around and help make them comfortable.
People who break these rules are removed from the site, much like an unruly house guest.
For a more detailed set of rules, please read The TL.net Ten Commandments
How to Use the Site
You should start at the top on this site. From left to right, the top menu bar will give you everything you need:
News - The news page features news from the Korean progaming world. Updates on tournaments, progaming gossip, interviews, and site updates are all here. Some worthy user created threads are also promoted to the featured threads section.
Forum - This is the meat of TeamLiquid. Clicking the Forum button at the top of the page will bring you to an index. There is a very active forum divided into many sections. There are also shortcuts to each section on the left.
If you wish to post here, keep the rules in mind. Before you create a new thread, search to see if your question has been answered. If you cant find anything, make sure your new thread contains lots of information and something to generate dicussion. Ensure that your title includes a tag such as [Help], [R] (for request), [Vid] for video, etc. Poor threads will be locked.
Please do not spoil results of tournaments, that is a simple way to be banned. We have anti-spoiler BB code (the [s] button), use that instead.
Any material not safe for work should be labelled as such. Posting tubgirl will get you banned.
VODs - Using bittorrent technology, it is now possible to watch all games played on Korean television. If you use this service, please say a thank you to the people who spend their time and money uploading VODs. Also, this is a community, so please make sure you continue to upload after you are finished. This will allow the original uploaders to move on to the next day's games.
Files uploaded to the tracker will automatically bump this thread.
Liquibet, Blogs, Replays, Articles - Liquibet is our own progaming betting league. Show your knowledge by picking the winners, and if you come out on top you get a cool icon.
Each user can create their own blog on TeamLiquid. Each blog entry is rated by other members, and the highest ranks blogs appear first on the Blogs page. To start yours, go to the Blogs page and click 'Create Blog'. Bloggers who bring something unique to TeamLiquid typically get the highest ratings and the most views.
Good replays are uploaded by staff in the replay section. You can comment and discuss the games there too.
The Articles section is a massive storehouse for the history of progaming. If you are new to the scene, this is the place for you to go and get the answers to your questions. There are also several FAQ's and quality interviews there.
My TL.net - This is your personal space on TL. Customize your profile, set various options, and send private messages from here.
Calendar - The calendar features the dates of upcoming live events. It is possible to watch these events live, and discuss them in real time on the forum. If you have a BW event, PM a staff member and they can add it to the calendar.
TLPD - The TeamLiquid Progaming Database is exactly what it sounds like: a comprehensive database containing every progamer and every official game played to date. You can find statistics for every player, every league, and every map, in addition to embedded VODs of over 2500 games.
Staff
There are numerous people who work on TeamLiquid. People with blue lettered names work on news and other special features. People with red lettered names are moderators who keep the board clean. People with black lettered names... you'll find out.
These people have all shown themselves to be excellent at what they do, and deserve respect for helping this site continue to prosper. If you are having trouble or have questions, send a private message to a moderator, and they will be glad to help you.
Have fun
By using the top menu bar, and respecting a few simple rules, you will be able to enjoy one of the best forums on the internet. Feel free to poke around, as there are many features not yet mentioned.

Search Function Techniques and Related Methods
Before making an inquiry, please make an effort to see if you question has been answered before in the past. The best way is to use the search function, which you can find in the right side on the screen, half way down. By default it searches for thread titles, but you have the option of searching for thread content, along with other search criteria. If you want to know what kind of career Garimto has had in the past, a simple search for "Garimto" or perhaps his korean name of "Kim Dong Soo" will yield results for your viewing pleasure. (careful not to bump old threads unless necessary though!).
Another thing to keep in mind, is that the search function does indeed accomodate string searches such as "zealot rush" or "unit control".
Checking the "sort results by forum" can be very useful if you are looking for results in the broodwar section, but want to keep an eye for other threads that may have been somewhat misplaced.
Along the same lines, it is often worthwhile to check the first page of the appropriate section of interest. If making a thread about that Savior game that happened 2 days ago, just check the thread list in the broodwar and tournament sections beforehand. Maybe there's already a thread about the very topic you wanted to discuss. If not, go ahead and make the thread under the correct subforum, making sure to include ample information that will fuel the discussion that will ensue therafter.
Edit: GOOGLE SEARCHING
You may notice that next to the "search" button is one that reads "google". This is a nifty feature where a google search is employed on the website's threads, enabling a potentially more powerful results list. However, it doesn't allow for the kind of filtering that the custom search function allows (such as subforum limitations).
Its most striking advantage is the ability to use words of 3 or fewer letters as the search criteria. "zvz" for instance, is finally searchable by using google search. However, note that this returns hits on both post content and thread title, with no subforum filter. Might take a bit of sorting through the results to find what you're looking for.

I have a feeling Mani wrote this cause there's no Starleague action right now and he's bored. Still this is good stuff for the TL newbie.

Unfortunately the search function does not handle 3 letter words such as pvp, pvz, OSL, MSL, and other potentially useful keywords. The reason for this is server resource limitations. However, for OSL/MSL, sometimes using the sponsor name such as "uzoo" or "shinhan" can yield good results. Also, the articles section has some nice summary threads on league results.
Another thing to keep in mind, is that the search function does indeed accomodate string searches such as "zealot rush" or "unit control". However, it cannot handle strings that contain word lengths of 3 or below, such as "pvp help".
Checking the "sort results by forum" can be very useful if you are looking for results in the broodwar section, but want to keep an eye for other threads that may have been somewhat misplaced.

I came up with this good idea, and I've been trying to use it whenever possible. I use the matchups just like a tag, ex: [PvP] or [PvZ]. That way, when a user goes to search, they can search for the string "[PvP]" and yield results, opposed to searching "PvP" and getting nothing back. Perhaps this is something we could start doing more often. You can even use it with things like [OSL] [MSL] [RWA] [FPR] etc etc
[edit] for some reason I always thought this worked but I guess it doesn't...? Or at least, it doesn't right now. I'd been including those tags anyway to help my threads stick out, but perhaps such a feature could be implemented into the search engine to allow us to search using [] tags.
Oh, and it may also be useful to mention the google search when looking for three letter strings. I'm surprised this isn't used more often, actually.

Nice. Very well put together.
