Hello everyone I am a long time fan of brood war , now watching starcraft 2 .
One of the commentators that got my attention was Orb .
I watch him every time I am on teamliquid , which is at least 2 or 3 times per week . I only watch esl tv when he casts .
After a while I realized that giving the high quality of his commentaries he has a very low number of viewers . Then through the thread in liquid i found out about what he did while he was laddering . I also heard him comment about the subject several times during his streaming .
And today something happened : while he was laddering on his orb account at around 11:30 AM GMT+2 time, some jack ass in the ladder taunted him in the game chat : "say the word n***** ". And even though orb was obviously affected , all he did was kept his cool , won the game through a failed cheese of his opponent , and made no comments . I know what he did back then was wrong , he knows it's wrong , and today, to me, he proved that he deserves a second chance . I hope this helps him even if it's just by a little bit .

Sadly his reputation was crushed into the ground. The community loves to find drama and he was attacked by most of the community so people aren't willing to forgive/forget, maybe in a year or 2 he will be able to work his way back up to getting some major casting jobs I only hope I am proved wrong.

Basically this, he was witch hunted into the ground for a small mistake and now people don't want to watch him anymore because of it. Even if he tries to do better now and actually does an excellent job of casting or playing people won't like him until the incident is a distant memory.

I don't think he does, he is still at it.

I couldn't care less that he said nigger. It's more that he's personally been a dick to me, and tons of other people across forums and ladder games. Why give him a 2nd chance?
|
It's still kinda nonsense that it went down as hard as it did in the first place. If orb is mentioned in a reddit thread, to this day, people will still bully him with references to that whole ordeal. I mean, he made mistakes, both in the initial situation and how he responded to it, but the punishment and bullying from the community did not fit the crime. He was crucified tenfold for the mistakes he made, because the internet (both reddit and the teamliquid forums alike) fuels the internet hate train.
I'm all for second chances, but I fear the internet as a whole isn't. I'm not sure it's something he'll ever hear the end of. Even if he perseveres for years, the internet doesn't easily forgive. I applaud him for not giving up as it is- that's something I wouldn't have the courage to do. I just wonder what such courage is worth to most people.
Not trying to white knight by saying that, people are entitled to their opinions, but it's plain as day that some people took their hatred for him too far. Instead of observing the situation and applying some critical thinking, a lot of (not all) people decided their pitchforks were best used to make memes to bully him, to shit on his reputation for their own fun, acting more childish in their criticism than he himself was in his mistakes. I myself am not his biggest fan, but nobody deserves the treatment he got.

i think orb was pretty much non-existent in the TL community before the drama. I mean, i never even heard of him until that thread about him using the n-word. Now almost everyone knows him. If anything, the drama probably helped him raise viewer numbers.

Maybe he does deserve a second chance but honestly I didnt like the guy at all, and I wouldnt mind if he stays away from the community forever.

Orb streamed early in the beta at a fairly decent level. Streaming had not yet became the sensation it is today. Because of this, and his popularity he was invited to the HDH invitational where Idra embarrassed him quickly in two games. Orb was popular long before his EG drama.
After clarifying this I would like to agree with some other posters. Having encountered him on a ladder a few times, win or lose the guy's a dick. Either "no skill cheese noob" or "no skill noob strat loses" type of comments.
He's still a decent caster and I don't mind listening to him at all. But he doesn't deserve anything.

I've watched his stream a few times, but it really doesn't appeal to me. The level of play on his stream is decent, but not particularly high and the actual game analysis is limited while in game. He'll also occasionally rage or go into some annoying rant which doesn't really entertain me. As a streamer, he's still just an immature kid for the most part who has only learned not to be taunted into saying certain words. Not really worth watching.
As a caster, he does seem to "get it" and act professional. I do enjoy his casts and hope that the medium-sized organizations don't shy away from him for their casts. His casts are still a little dry (and could use a quality sidekick), but he is definitely better than the other non-premium casters out there that I've seen.
I personally didn't demonize him for what he did during the incident since I understood it for what it was... just an immature kid raging. He got hit harder by the community than he deserved and will have to work hard for years to get past it (and will still get the memes forever). Still, none of that is really relevent to why I don't watch him stream as noted above.

I see a lot of people talking about orb's reputation, but almost none of it has to do with his casting.
To all those people that say orb should not be given a second chance due to his indiscresions on ladder, think about what you are saying for a moment. You cannot and should not judge a person by their moments of weakness, just because a person swears and does heinous things on ladder does not make him a bad person. I mean, I don't know if you guys were around in BW, but Artosis was one of the most BM players on this side of the Pacific. Yet it seems like everybody adores him, even though on stream and ladder he seems to be vulgar as well. (obviously not as bm orb was, but he's still very passive-agressive) You simply cannot judge somebody on how they behave on their private stream. (and honestly, orb has acted a lot better as of late)
Obviously, I don't know why orb is/was so bm, (perhaps some personal issues, etc) but what I do know is his casting is top notch, and if we're gonna let people like Artosis and Idra cast and adore them, then certainly orb deserves a second chance as well.

While the technicality of what he did was what really shoved his reputation into the ground he was also known for just having a poor attitude and personality. Ever since beta all he did was rage at people and call them much more then n*****.
I just do not think he deserves a second chance considering the length of time these actions occurred, and if anything he already had many chances.

It´s not just about the nigger, it was also that he was such a dick
Orb failed on the corporate side by racist remarks
Orb failed community wise by being a pretentious little prick

orb always was a dick. this stupid thing just made evryone that was annoyed by him before go apeshit on him.
also 1 post and romania -_-'

gee, i'm not too sure about that. He isn't even that good at sc2 and his casting is rather mediocre (doesn't have the skills to be an analytical caster, nor the personality to be the fun fun caster).
Edit: from what catz has said, he "doesn't have a huge following".
|
I do have to say he sort of had an unique quirkyness/personality and could easily (if he wasn´t such a dick and did those stupid things) went on to become a major caster.
He was gaining a lot of traction due to ESV and NASL (Think he was casting both, or was it just ESV?) but then just blew it all with the most childish posts about how ''it was his friend playing''. His reaction to the whole ordeal cost him the community vote.
I mean he was in the EG house for godsake, but he threw away an opportunity of a lifetime and that´s his loss and he is the only one to blame.
|
If the community gave LastShadow a second chance I think they'll be able to give Orb one eventually.
|
He could grow a beard, change his name to Orbit, and I would gamble most of the people hating on him during the controversy wouldn't remember who he is.
|
We can get technical and talk about how he ladder rages, or we can lament about how we saw him laddering and his opponent taunted him. The truth of the matter is he has the most unique case of a tarnished reputation, but no one knows him as a bigot or racist, just that guy the community witch hunted for no reason at the beginning(fake picture) and then they found a reason(found a real replay) and EG had to maintain their rep.
If he wants to, he can still cast, not neccesarily make it big. As far as I hear, that's what he's doing.

stream barely working on 240p for me; might be my internet though
