i'm also disappointed that destiny, for all his "people skills", hasn't learned any PR from the orb situation. people seem to think every situation is one where they as a unique, proud individual is being threatened, when even a cookiecutter apology can go a long way. if not to the community, then to warden. at least nobody will be writing your sponsors, you know.
why is this community so stupid sometimes? Sorry, "PR"? You want to talk about respect? How about treating a community of people like humans, and not a mindless hive-blob of blithering idiots waiting for you to appease them with hollow, empty, meaningless phrases that everyone finds kosher? You may not like what I have to say, but I will go down in flames screaming nigger/gook/spick/faggot/queer before I ever release a pointless cookie-cutter apology. I'm honestly disgusted and disappointed that you, as a human being, find meaning in these bullshit PR moves that other people make. I'm tired of public figures that stand for nothing, and instead merely try to act as a mirror, reflecting back onto other people whatever it is they want to see. I'm disgusted and disappointed in you as a human being that you have no empathy for the people that your racial and hateful slurs affect. How do you not know that just because you think its okay doesn't mean everyone else does? This isn't even about religion or free speech. Its about using words that you know hurt people just because you think they shouldn't hurt people. News to you, just because you think people should act a certain way doesn't mean they do. I'm going to stop responding to thoughtless post like this until you respond to my questions earlier. Tell me which words a person should/shouldn't be allowed to say, and then tell me why some groups of people are protected while others aren't. Why do you have to say any of those words? They're in the dictionary like all the other words he uses.

I'm a relatively creative person, whether I'm making an analogy or insulting someone or talking dirty to your mother over the phone. I can get across most messages I have pretty clearly. Some groups get that protected status because of institutionalized marginalization and discrimination. White people don't get that because they've never been marginalized. Ah. However, we can convince Quantic to keep you in line. I would leave my time and abandon any sponsorships before turning myself into a politically correct zombie who spews meaningless bullshit because people are too fucking weak to handle a few swear words. There is a difference between being a 'politically correct zombie' and not condoning public use of racial slurs. The move to degrade 'political correctness' has been a go-to for right-wing nutjobs for a long time, and it does not help in the current debate. What is at issue is whether it is okay for public figures to use racial slurs. Forget whether it 'offends' people for a moment, and consider that publicly endorsing this language contributes to a culture of marginalization of racial minorities. If this is the case (which some believe), then it would be better to not endorse use of this language. Why wouldn't I condone public use of racial slurs? It has abso-fucking-lutely nothing to do with racism. People can use racial slurs without being racist. Not in an attempt to insult or demean another person they can't. Either you think vietnamese are just people, or you think they're subhuman 'gooks' to be shot without remorse. The word carries the baggage with it, regardless of how unthinkingly you used it. That you also resorted to homophobia is fairly telling as well.
Quite frankly, either E-sports is totally opposed to bigotry and hate, or it's just another cesspool of 'xbox-live kids'. I don't have any problem with people emailing Razer and expressing dismay that their company is being associated with such things, that's a sensible position. There are consequences from that to be sure, some of which may be widespread for the whole of E-sports unfortunately. But frankly that's the way it has to be. Hate within our community taints everyone, the damage has been done already. Cleaning it up, and making it clear that some behaviors are never acceptable, without exception, is the only way forward.

Even if you disagree with what I said you could probably agree that quantic deserves a chance to respond before you start emailing sponsors.
dear incontrol, i can understand your point, because you're a person who has to directly deal with everything our mails to razer achieve. but i can't understand how you expect us to wait weeks for quantic gaming to respond in this short-lived times. if they were known for taking a stand against unaccepable behaviour i could've waited for a response, but they already gave a subliminal statement when they signed a person like destiny. "he is well known for his behaviour on stream, this is not new, we don't care as long as people don't care loud enough" neither did i ever read a statement from one of the other players on quantic that they are not ok with destiny's behaviour. so the team and any player can be accountable for the outcome of this shitstorm. supporting evil behaviour by not acting against it or just being silent is just as bad as the behaviour itself. the good thing about messaging razor directly is that they are sponsoring so many teams. they are in a position to enforce professional behaviour from many more players than a single pro-team could ever do. if my email to razer is playing a tiny part in forcing teams to have higher recruitment standards or leads to a moral code for razer sponsored teams i can be proud.and frankly if we as a community don't take a firm stand against any haters of gays/women/ethnic groups we don't deserve to have sponsored teams.
Oh, you naive forum-goer. Do you really think Razer really cares about eSports that much, so that they are willing to act like a Kespa and enforce professionalism? No, they are sponsoring it to promote their products, and when you send them angry emails they pull out en masse. And so not just Quantic gets hurt, every team that Razer supports, Team Liquid, Slayers, etc all lose funding.
This community has way too many people who know way too little about how the real world works, yet are way to eager to act without thinking and end up messing up a scene built through years of hard work and labor by a few.

is there a thread on reddit about this? I cant find one on the front page and would like to get more into this

This thread makes me sad, how are we supposed to grow as a community when people react so immaturely and hastily over these issues?? The world isn't full of political correctness and fluffy bunnies, if everyone was fired for making a remark that someone, somewhere might find offense ... well then we would have a problem.
Destiny has explained and defended his actions many times in the past and has made it abundantly clear to the community that this is his personality whether it is accepted or not. Destiny doesn’t force anyone to watch his stream or adhere to his beliefs, all he does is be himself, and this has been instrumental in building this community.
So if you are offended by destiny's actions, then that's your choice, but instead of trying to get him fired or punished by his team/sponsors (running to mummy for help), why not just not watch his stream?? Go and PM White-Ra and tell him what a nice person he is. Don’t bring negativity into the community, it doesn’t help anyone...

If you don't like the things I say or the way I act, don't watch my stream. Less people watching me = less money for me, meaning I either A) have to change the way I behave, or B) fade away from the public eye. On May 02 2012 00:44 SherlockTV wrote:I think any community that is a community at all would see his stream has a negative impact on it and would seek to prevent it by de-listing his stream. Negative impact on the community? I have the most viewer hours of any current SC2 streamer. You don't think that counts for anything? That we are trash-talking immature button mashers that rage and argue like children. ITT: someone wishing that someone else's child gets bullied in high school, then calling that person ignorant because he uses bad words on the internet. On May 02 2012 00:44 SherlockTV wrote:Seriously people, stop watching his shit. Its not entertaining and its not funny and its not even educational. Its a waste of time and its very negative just to listen to his logic and world views. Educational...I lol'd. Here's a novel idea Destiny...don't say any of them! Is your vocabulary so small that that really cripples your ability to communicate? Or even communicate cleverly? Some groups get that protected status because of institutionalized marginalization and discrimination. White people don't get that because they've never been marginalized. Although to be honest I have no delusions that we're going to be able to convince you in this thread. However, we can convince Quantic to keep you in line. You didn't respond to anything I said. Do you think you sound intelligent because you're requesting that I arbitrarily edit out certain words from my vocabulary because some groups of people may find those words offensive? My vocabulary is larger than most. What does that have to do with anything? Are you trying to make the claim that everyone that swears is stupid, or at least has a small vocabulary? I think I communicate cleverly plenty enough. Ah. So white people are never A) poor, B) bullied, C) disabled, or otherwise disadvantaged? You think every single white person in the world lives a perfect life? Sorry, bro, but that's pretty fucking racist. And bigoted. Although to be honest I have no delusions that we're going to be able to convince you in this thread. However, we can convince Quantic to keep you in line. I would leave my time and abandon any sponsorships before turning myself into a politically correct zombie who spews meaningless bullshit because people are too fucking weak to handle a few swear words. Your entire argument boils down to "I should be able to say offensive things that have no place in polite society." You aren't saying anything more intelligent than the 12 year olds who think they're being edgy and hardcore on xbox live by spouting that nonsense. There's a huge difference between swearing and slurring. And no, you've never been marginalized for being white. Asians have been marginalized for being asian. Homosexuals have been marginalized for being homosexual. If you want to pretend like you're some valiant defender of free speech, go right ahead. The Starcraft higher ups have already made it pretty clear they don't like this stuff coming from their players or casters. Maybe the LoL community will have a home for you. Asians are not really a marginalized minority within our society. They are comparable if not more successful than whites on most of the relevant criteria; college attendance, job performance, the like. The mere fact that we stereotype Asians as "smart" or "good at math" is pretty indicative of this. If you look at the community's perception of Koreans in general, this is pretty clear. Many individuals think Koreans are better either just innately or because their culture is innately superior. Yeah, that could be true, but it's often characterized as racist when applied to Western (read: white) cultures. I'm sorry that you get offended easily, but that's you, I don't really care about slurs on my Irish ethnicity, although it's only been a few decades since we've fit in mainstream "white" society, and barring the sole exception of the Kennedy family, are generally absent from the top echelons of American society. Slurs on African Americans receive a more serious response in American society because of the huge impact white-black race relations has had on this country. For better or worse, that's a fact, and orb paid for that mistake. Destiny insulted some random guy on a video game in which said ethnicity is widely regarded as superior. I don't see anything coming of this. Maybe you forgot about the concentration camps we had for the Japanese back in WWII? Or maybe you're unfamiliar with the political ads that blatantly demonize the Chinese?
Yes, the United States is concerned about a powerful China, as are our allies in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Myanmar.
I mean, what? How does China's political rise have anything at all to do with race, especially when we're closer than ever with our Asians allies in the aforementioned nations?
Sure, we did terrible things once upon a time to the Japanese during a very critical moment in our nations history, and we paid for it. Unlike other cases of discrimination, we apologized as a nation and gave monetary recompense.for our actions.
Neither of your points, for the record, addresses the use of the slur "gook", which comes from the Korean word for Korean "hangook" and is an offensive slurs against Koreans, not Asians at large.
