Man, I wonder what really seperates the people who get in and get cut, the difference is probably pretty damn marginal O_O) The difference must have been the recommendations, his stats are pretty damn impressive, but the top people at my old high school bust those levels regularly and Harvard took only 2, one was a fucking genius and the other was even more of a fucking genius especially in music (published music at an early age) I think they got additional recs from college professors underwhich they worked with (since they were required to) and published under. But yeah I find it surprising Harvard/MIT didnt make a go at Myr, he should be at least waitlisted imo, might have been the fact that MIT/Harvard grabbed from your area already and you were passed over for some reason.

That's pretty much my top choice right now. My other choice is Clemson University (hometown school), which is giving me a free ride and maybe slight spending money too. Money's going to be pretty important because I figure at Duke I might have to take a pretty bad hit, and I plan to go to grad school after undergrad anyway. Eh yeah, I'll take some time to think (although obviously Duke's a better school and I've got maybe Princeton pending tomorrow)--I've got some friends at Duke and one might tour me around. edit: Harvard already took a girl from my school in early action who is student body president. She has much worse stats than me but is a really nice friend of mine, so I'm happy for her going there. Btw, for the record, I'm American-born Taiwanese.

First off, there are probably 500-1000 candidates with the same "personality" as him- Asian male, high grades, math focus. This is not to even touch on the rest of the Asian male demograph with a different academic focus. Who do you take as a college? Maybe a number of these have excelled further- they are in national olympiads etc. Maybe a different set have some special personality- AIDS research in Africa. Maybe others break the standard "Asian" mold and are extroverted "movers" that are interested in business and politics. I don't want to stereotype, but that is something you have to pay attention to- how do YOU break the mold? *On a side note, a guy got into Harvard and two girls into MIT this year from my school. They have very different focuses- the girls are both math/science oriented- but they have also done very well- that often is enough to break a mold for a girl. As for the guy, his personality and refinement probably shone through in his writing and made Harvard interested. But all these people are also different in their approach than me. From their view, I believe they thought that I would be the entrepreneur and the mover- something I captured in my EC's and my writing. These fundamental strategies and perceptions are what anyone interested in a very competitive college should and must consider.

Naventus, that's not rude at all, it's cool. It's the way I see the situation and probably the truth in any case. Yeah, and my one non-academic feature is my decent musical talent (if I wanted I could have gotten into a lower to mid level conservatory handily), the next Asian stereotype thing to have after good grades. It's the people that were a lot smarter than me or actually did something really impressive that got in deservedly instead of me. Oh, and my essays were pretty mediocre too.
