As for the Swarm Host I think it's fine. Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

It popped up suddenly in the past few years, and almost everyone who 'has' it was unaware until someone asked them and showed them a video and then asked some loaded questions. I've literally had this for years and thought it was the dumbest, most made up thing. And then I saw this thread. I can say with confidence that probably some people genuinely have this fear. It's not about itchiness for me. I get extremely uncomfortable, need to look away, and feel the need to get away quickly as fast as I can. I can't believe that I am unique.

A phobia is a irrational fear of something. Irrational means there really should not be a reason to fear the thing you are afraid of. A phobia of the number 13, large bodies of water, large ships or having your photo taken are all examples of phobias. You can have a phobia of a thing that is dangerous, but the fear itself is not rational. Fear of spiders is a good example. Some spiders are danagerous, but not all. Trypophobia is not a phobia because it is just a discofort with the deformation of something living. People are afraid of parasites and all the grossness that goes with them, with good reason. The fear is not irrational. I am not devaluing your fear of the video and its subjects. The video is creepy as hell and I stopped watching after a few minutes. Having a strong reaction to it is not irrational. The concept of having your body invaded or having something living burrowing in your body is horrific. Creepy frogs and bloat flys are not the number 13. Its ok to think they are creepy.

I couldn't get past the first 2 seconds because the "suggested videos" on the side were so revolting that I had to immediately close the window. Zergs in general kind of bother me. Larvae freak me out the most, and since you have to click on that shit all game to make anything, I can't ever play Zerg. Mutas, hydras, and ultras are all okay though. Blizzard should not be catering to people like this for obvious reasons and I'm 99.9% sure they wont.

And the picture of the little girl with things in her skin was just odd...like someone tried WAY too hard to make that creepy so it just seems generic. Ultimately I was unphased by the video, however I do think the holes in the swarm host make it seem more repulsive and biologically abnormal. I think this is SUPPOSED to happen, generating a WTF? responce the first time or two yo usee it. Working as intended. I would say that I do not suffer from this phobia. Still, interesting to think about and killed some time at work. Thanks OP.

I don't think you'll complain if blizz comes out with a better unit design to replace the current swarm host. I personally find all the vids/pics in this thread disgusting... the swarm host itself doesn't seem to bother me much though. Why not help out alll the people who are grossed out and feel uncomfortable because of bugs? I guess the entire zerg race is going to have to change, to accomadate their fear.

It is the same with lice, really think about lice. How they are crawling on you head. A lot of people will get itchy after reading that, does not mean they have a phobia.

I have no issues at all with stuff like honey combs or similar but when it comes to stuff like this on human skin it completely freaks me out. I have no real problems with lotus seed pods and that frog is gross in another way and I don't really have a problem with the Swarm Host but I can totally understand people that do as it is borderline for me. People that mock this needs to shut up, it's real. And like all/most phobias, it's not really rational or can be explained. You can't compare it to fear of the dark or anything like that. Fear of the dark very rarely triggers from watching a dark space, you have to be in the dark yourself etc. A small change to the art work would be nice I think. On October 28 2011 18:16 blah_blah wrote: But it's really not self-diagnosis -- there's an actual physiological reaction going on, and either you experience it or you don't. I mean, I can look at lotus pods without really feeling anything, and that picture of cracks that some guy posted has zero effect on me, but show me a lamprey or especially those goddamn photoshopped lamprey fingers and I feel profoundly unsettled and uncomfortable. I saw the lamprey fingers for the first time on the internet probably a half decade ago and they still absolutely gross me out. There is clearly some sort of instinctual, visceral reaction to patterns like this. Wrong, wrong, wrong, WRONG. The effect of trypophobia (thanks urban dictionary!) is down to subconscious (or primordial as a previous poster put it) level, and it is present in all humans. Humans are naturally disgusted by flesh that is disfigured/damaged, to varying degrees, from slight unease to outright disgust/fear (which is why discomfort can be caused by lotus seeds in their natural form, ie unphotoshopped onto people - it looks like it should be smooth flesh, but the holes induce this unease), if you are not there is something wrong with you. The above poster is correct in recognising an instinctual reaction, but is wrong to think it is a psychological phobia. Personally, the pictures affect me not one whit (although they still made me feel itchy, what a coincidence, huh?), and I will tell you why. This entire thing was made up to troll people on 4chan many years ago. Their reactions then were the same as many people's in this thread, minus the 'itchy' part, which someone cleverly added on (you are getting itchy because you are getting told to feel itchy, not because of what you are watching). What is interesting is that no one said anything about this being a phobia then, it was just an interesting way to make people feel utterly freaked out until someone explained that the shit was photoshopped. The only cure for this 'phobia' is to grab a bag of cement, and harden the fuck up.
