My first time blogging is about a phenomenon that I've noticed on TL lately, a group of people I label as the 2010 crowd.
This group of people is a mysterious species of forum troll. They range in all manner of icon, from the lowly probe to the distinguished lurker, and are not always easy to spot at first glance. Although the more obvious sign that you're dealing with a member of this group is the 1000+ post account with a worker icon, some blend into the background of their fellow forum-goers more seamlessly.
However, sure enough, whenever there's someone flaming other users, balance whining, posting an internet meme, or just entirely derailing a thread, you'll notice something similar if you look closely enough...
Like a subtle sign that reads, "i migrated from 4chan, u mad bro?" Now, it's important to note here that any account made post-2010 (i.e. 2011) falls into this exclusive group of people as well. The existence of this group may even predate the arrival of SC2 to TL, as while old accounts and bad posters die off, new ones inevitably rise to take their place. Indeed, there's no strict evidence to support that this phenomenon even began in 2010, and this may instead be a semiannual breed of troll.
So when you, a civil-minded human being, are confronted with their seemingly endless numbers, what are you supposed to do? The most important first step is to identify that you're dealing with a member of the 2010 crowd. Some of these simple tips should prove useful:
Bad grammar and grammar nazis:
I guess your beyond retarded, because the governments theory of 9/11 its self a conspiracy. A common theme among the 2010 crowd is a complete disregard for the English language. Spelling conventions, punctuation, full sentences? Forget it, they'd rather roll their palms across the keyboard.
On the other side of this coin, however, we have the grammar nazi. These people snort with derision at someone's grammar, and they derail a thread to simply point out how much smarter they are. A quick glance at their profile will often tell you what you already know about both.
Flaming other users:
but your comment is the most stupid one i've seen on any forums since internet has been implement. A member of the 2010 crowd will often resort to ad hominem attacks, sometimes even without provocation. Although TL encourages clever flaming, the 2010 crowd does not employ wit or tact to their insults. A simple profile check will often identify him quickly.
Image macros and memes
/trollface One of the most obvious signs of this crowd, all forms of image macros and memes invariably mean you've stumbled across one of these breeds of troll.
Balance whining
when protoss starts using more than one army ctrl group ill consider their QQ Most of us learn quickly that here at TL, if you don't have something meaningful to contribute, then don't contribute at all. Yet somehow people still whine about balance on these forums, under the false pretenses that whining on TL will affect game design. As a sign of someone who never played SC:BW, where everything was imba, and someone who hasn't learned how to post properly here, this is a surefire sign of someone belonging to the 2010 crowd.
The troll who posts all one-liners
Build Ghosts. It's the hard counter to anything bio or with shields after all. But it's kay, we'll all just go mech. Ghosts rape mutas, what are yo talking about? I'm a Zerg who jokes about how Infestors are the counter to everything. TvP, Ghosts are somehow stronger. Two all-ins fail. Economically, we all lose. inb4 mule joke The trickiest troll of them all, the one-liner doesn't always post in a grossly offensive way. Instead, their posting often goes entirely unnoticed, and it won't be until the user slips up and gets a ban that their posting history comes to light. Only then, 100 posts down the road, do you realize that they've been deliberately spewing filth all over the forums. Indeed, this is the greatest enemy of them all, and he rarely survives the year.
Not all of us have the power to ban, and not all of us even have access to the report function. So what are the best answers you have at your disposal when you meet a member of the 2010 crowd?
First, remember that you used to be just like them. Maybe not last year, maybe not even ten years ago, but we weren't always the forum veterans we are today. Soon enough, 2012 will be upon us, and with that extra year of experience many members of the 2010 crowd will move on and either start posting appropriately or find another forum.
Education is key. Not everyone who posts here knows how TL is run. TL has a unique set of rules we refer to as our ten commandments, and although that image macro or inb4 lock may be fine on another forum, TL has standards. A kind private message can go a long way - it has for me before, and it will for other people. Don't derail a thread to do so, however.
Ignore them if nothing else. As hard as that may be, moderation will deal with them in time, and feeding the trolls is never the solution. A lot of the 2010 crowd just want attention, and they have no interest in learning to post better. Although it may be hard to overlook them shitting up your forum, they'll shit it up twice as fast with your encouragement.
Failing in that, you can always just avoid General and the SC2 forums. Happy posting!

Or maybe I got him! And by transitivity, you also!

That was taken way too seriously.

It's not about seniority either. Just like wine, some years made better products then other and honestly, 2007, to my expert tastes (probably better then yours, gotta admit) made the most refined posters.

this shit is the dumbest thing ive ever read u shuld kill urself cuz u suck also protoss imba as fuck
...
Unfortunately, despite your disclaimer signifying satire, I think a fair amount of this is at least partly accurate. Most of the truly frustrating, ignorant, dumb-as-fuck, or insulting posts I read are made by the SCII crowd. Of course, not every 2010'er is a pile of shit poster, but for every Probe1, there are a hundred and seven SuperArcs (at least, the equivalent of SuperArc). It's more a case of the Internet than a case of new users, but that makes it no less annoying.
Also, my registration date is in 2010. T_T I only wish I had found out about TL back in '05 or so, to experience the community in its prime. I consider it a lost opportunity...

I found out what happened on Feb, 4th 2008 and was going to blame you for it but its nothing but bad news so never mind I enjoyed the read though ^^. Pretty well done, but have you actually ever used a ghost vs mutalisks? its carnage. =p

brb checking my profile for register date.... only 2008 I was sure i had been here longer! ^_^ stupid lurking and not registering; if you read this and don't have an account register immediately! you don't want to be known as the 2012 crowd.

Singling out a year for it was arbitrary and meant in good humor. Although I do mean a certain amount of the sentiment I expressed, like there have been a lot of bad posters roaming around lately, I mostly just wanted to vent about it in a joke blog. I don't actually believe it has anything to do with join date beyond a lack of familiarity with TL. I guess I lost that in writing though.

Yeah, it wasn't pretty.

As a 2005er, I fully support this post. actually, this is discrimination and has no place in our society!

i was going to label this as confusingly pretentious
after reading the disclaimer its just confusing :F
must be a traumatizing experience for those not used to big forums, and with that i mean how TL went from being a rather tightly knit community to a fullblown salad of ... well, everyone you could find on the internet. Theres just that much more shit to plow through to get to the quality but thats just how it goes D:
gl in your future trolling, lets see how well the post-beta crowd (rather than post 2010, cause join dates are irrelevant considering the amount of lurkers who have been lurking for far longer than their join date would indicate) rubs off on you :D

Yea needed to be more obvious (or maybe I just haven't been trolled enough.. good or bad thing?). The way I read it: Hey (people of which I know 1% of thousands), you are stupid trolls from 4chan. Wait you take offense? Well obviously you're too thick to get I was kidding. Here's a disclaimer. I'm on a horse
IDK maybe next time ^^
