I like the idea of a silent keyboard in theory but I'm wondering how the lack of sound affects typing speed, enjoyment, etc. It depends what your main purpose for the keyboard is; personally, I enjoy reds for StarCraft and blues for typing. I like reds for StarCraft due to the lesser force needed to actuate the keys and the lack of a tactile bump, which I find now to be a distraction when playing. With some O-Rings and PBT keycaps, not only is the keyboard quiet (great for those late night gaming sessions!) but it feels amazing too. Cloud of boobs indeed. Typing on reds feel quite nice, but I enjoy having the tactile feel especially when typing out long articles or just overall use outside of StarCraft. Blues are probably the best typing switch out there, only rivaled by ergo-clears (so I've heard, haven't tried those nor do I have the modding skills to do so). The clicky sound makes typing such a joy, while the tactile bump adds to the experience. No joke, I get an extra 10+ WPM typing on blues than any other switch. However, I don't like them for StarCraft as the aforementioned bump gets somewhat distracting; even with headphones, the clicky blues are quite loud and aren't well-suited for my personal use at night since it wakes everyone up. I found it tougher to press the keys in rapid succession due to the extra force needed in comparison to the reds, and the bump makes the reaction time "feel" slower. In reality, there's no difference in performance (APM is still the same) but over time the reds are less fatiguing and more enjoyable when it comes to gaming. The browns, I don't know anymore. They're a compromise between the reds and blues and are still the safest switch to choose if you're looking at doing both typing and gaming and can only afford one keyboard. The tactile bump is there, but barely noticeable. The feel of the browns becomes annoying when playing games, and not as enjoyable when typing. Never enjoyed the black switches; they felt like more consistent rubber dome keyboards but were really fatiguing on my fingers. Reds a much better switch IMO. Never considered black switches as a purchase. TL;DR Personal preference. If it matters, I am currently using a Filco MJ2 Ninja with reds for SC2 and a Filco MJ2 Ninja with blues for everything else. My Filco MJ1 is sitting in its box doing nothing. All three have aftermarket PBT keycaps and O-Rings (40A on blues and reds, 50A on browns. Browns feel more responsive with the harder O-Rings in my opinion.)

After doing some basic research, I think the blue switches are where I'd like to be - I appreciate the tactile feedback and while I like to game, it's not such a serious consideration that I'd be willing to sacrifice the tactile feel for the easier actuation of the red switches. Probably the majority of my typing is either papers or general usage, and it seems the blues are better for that (or that's my impression, anyway). That said, I have a couple of follow up questions that hopefully someone can answer: 1) How expensive is a set of o-rings, and generally speaking how difficult is it to install? 2) I'm a bit confused on the PBT keycaps. Do they replace the keys, or merely cover the keys (which is what I think they do)? And what is the benefit to having them? Thanks for all the help - I'm thinking of making my first foray into the mechanical keyboard world and I like to do my homework before purchasing - makes the chance of being burned by a bad buy much lower.

Currently using a Qsenn as I'm learning korean and it is necessary for typing but I would like a mechanical keyboard without having to switch back and forth for my practice. Anyone have any recommendations? Get a english keyboard and then buy hangul keyboard stickers online for like 5 USD

I love blues, just make sure its ok for you to make quite a racket when typing/SC2ing. Blues are loud. WASD keyboards sell O-rings for $14. Installing is more time consuming than difficult, pulling all the keycaps off (being careful with the big stabilised keys, youtube will tell you how) and putting a o-ring on each and then putting all the keycaps back on. Having a keycap puller is very useful, but you can make one at home without too much trouble. I used floss before I got one. PBT keycaps are entirely new keycaps made from a different type of plastic. They resist wear better and feel better? Im not really sure as I don't have any. Im sure someone else can answer.

has the red switches and is sorta cheap compared to lots out there. From reading some posts, seems like Ducky is a respectable brand. Anyone have this and can share their experience. This would be good for FPS and RTS right? the keys also have the letters in chinese or ?? kinda weird. Thanks Boblhead but i was specifically looking at the Steelseries 6gv2. i'm open to others but def cherry reds are it for me.

PBT keycaps are entirely new keycaps made from a different type of plastic. They resist wear better and feel better? Im not really sure as I don't have any. Im sure someone else can answer. The O-Rings from WASDKeyboards come in three different varieties: 40A in "standard" and "low" profiles, and 50A in standard. The 40As are softer and reduce the sound of bottoming out a bit more than 50As, which are crisper and more reactive in my opinion. Installation is time consuming as already mentioned. Be careful with the stabilized keys, especially on boards with Costar stabilizers, you don't want to break the metal bars or the plastic inserts. PBT keycaps do indeed have a rougher texture that's more resistant to shine and wear. Depending on the thickness of the keycaps, they can reduce volume quite noticeably too. I have a set of engraved keycaps from qtan that I enjoy with the reds because of the rougher texture, while a thick blank set from imsto graces my blues because of the added thickness and lower profile. Having used both PBT and ABS caps for an extended period of time now, I don't want to go back to ABS caps if given the option. Hope this helps!

Steelseries has great customer service but their mechanicals aren't as solid performers as other companies like Rosewill or Filco. Only consider the SS if it's on sale somewhere below the price of a Rosewill or Leopold.

Rosewill has costar stabilised keys which many prefer to the cherry stabilisers of Ducky. Ducky's usually have extra keys above the numpad with media functions. Rosewill probably trumps the ducky slightly for quality, as they are very similar to filcos. Your better off ordering from pchome http://global.pchome.com.tw/?mod=store&func=style_show&SR_NO=DCAH0X&tm=u you can navigate through the site pretty easy with a translator. But they ship to europe for $20
