I was high masters in WoL and played (and beat) GMs all the time. In HotS I played and got one of the first masters divisions. My division had a ton of grandmaster-level players, so 2 weeks later I used "leave league" to get an easier division. I had to play 5 placement matches against people of my old MMR, and got placed into diamond. Playing against grandmasters.

I find the leagues really screwed up. I beat a top 50 GM at the time while I was in diamond league, and I didn't have an exceptional winrate either (only ~70 overall%). After about 30 games against high masters and a few GMs, I finally got promoted again into masters. Really weird :S

I understand that the MMR is more important than the league ranking, but you didn't promote to Masters in WoL pairing with only 2 masters in 17 games.

Even my own promotion to masters seems questionable. I played a GM who got 10 pts off me the game before I promoted. Strange considering I never promoted to masters in WoL, although I was playing and beating quite a few WoL masters.

I don't have any updated data that would suggest promotions are any different from how they were before. It's entirely possible that you could be in Diamond playing against Master-level players and encounter another Diamond player who's also playing against Master-level players, so the quality of the game would be Master-level even though you're both sporting Diamond icons. The best way to tell is not only to look at the leagues of your opponents, but the leagues of your opponents' opponents to get a more grounded estimate.

Subtle brag much?

Well even if it isn't (cmon it is), I don't find that too weird at all. Your MMR is something you should just go by, not High Master or GM. You're a pussy for bitching out of your division. A man's worth in SC2 isn't bond by ranks and leagues, courage to stand up against players better than you are, a sense of humility, how much you squat at the gym, etc. - leagues and rank aren't everything! So be a man, 70% winrates means that you aren't losing enough! Ascend and fight even better players!

Forgive my ignorance. I haven't played SC2 ladder since season 3 in 2010. I just came back to SC2 so the MMR is fresh (being masters almost 3 years ago doesn't matter from what I've read) my question is, I went 3-2 in placements, placed gold and was recently promoted after going 4-1 in gold. Have you always been able to be promoted without beating someone in the next division? I played only 1 platinum player since my placements and I lost. I'm guessing maybe the game thought i was close to platinum when it placed me gold, hence why my first opponent was platinum.

Anyway, I thought that was a pretty fast promotion and thought it was odd it placed me higher without having actually beat a platinum player. From what little I read I heard promotions etc,. take longer these days so I guess it was a pleasant surprise.

Oh well, here's to my long, hopeful trek back to masters.

I'm finding the match making a little weird lately too. I was platinum last season (played just one game to get the placement) but I was placed in Silver in HOTS. Played 2 games, got promoted to Gold and now I'm playing Diamond/Master level players while still in Gold league. lol

In my self-sacrifice for the common good, I have started my quest for demotion to silver. Here are the statistics so far:
47 games, 15 wins, 32 losses. Opponents: 3 unranked, 2 bronze, 3 silver, 36 gold and 3 platinum. There has been no change in my opponents league whatsoever.

I'm going to give this experiment up, because I'm actually unable to get demoted. Here are the results so far:

http://www.lysator.liu.se/~john/experiment.png

The red dots (left axis) represent my opponents league. The blue line (right axis) shows my win - loss difference. If I lose more than I win it will go down. The vertical green lines show my promotions to silver and gold. There are no games missing in this graph: Every game from the start of HotS is there.

Common wisdom says that promptions should have no direct effect on my opponents league, but as we can see that is not the case here. It changed literally the exact moment I was promoted.

After 150 games where I have consistently lost more than I've won I'm still in gold. Furthermore, my opponents are spread out over bronze, silver and gold. I haven't got a clue about what league my MMR is in anymore. I wanted to see what happened if I got down to silver again, but I don't know what I have to do to get demoted. Also, it's starting to get somewhat boring.

Alright, there something not normal going on with the matchmaking system. I started out in bronze. Excluding placement matches I faced 8 bronze and 9 unranked. After that I was promoted to silver. My win ratio (excluding placement) was 47%.

In silver I faced 71 silver 5 unranked 2 gold and 1 bronze. Win ratio: 53%.

Then I was promoted to gold. I had not seen a gold opponent for 42 games. Now I was really suspicious. I decided to leave a few games, in the name of science. Here were my opponents:

Gold, gold, gold, silver, gold, gold.

I'm aware of the obfuscation unranked games causes, but I have carefully kept a record of my games for years, and the above behavior is not normal.
1: The promotions without facing higher league opponents.
2: Only getting matched against people in my own league.

Keep an eye open. I want to know what is happening here.

I have experienced the same thing.

I was just promoted to Diamond after a 6 game win streak. Up until that point, I had only faced 1 diamond opponent in HOTS. That was before the 6 game win streak, and I managed to defeat the diamond player, but then I was matched up against platinum players and a few gold players. My last two games before the promotion were against a gold and a platinum.

In WOL, as you said, I had to consistently face and defeat players in the league above my own to be promoted.
When I was in silver, I had to beat gold league players for at least 10-12 games before promotion, and then in gold I had to defeat platinum players. I was rarely matched against someone at or below my league level in the games leading up to promotion.

I don't really know what to make of the new promotion system, but it does seem unusual for the computer to assume you are ready for a higher league if you haven't been facing opponents in that league somewhat regularly.

I can echo that experience nubain.

I went 3-2 placements, 4-1 in gold, promoted to platinum without having beat a platinum player. My first two games in platinum were against a masters and a diamond.

Very strange.

Sorry if it has been answered somewhere else in the thread but I didn't feel like reading every page.

I was wondering if they changed the number of people (%) in master league? I thought it used to be 2% of the active player base ( according to this old post on the b.net forum: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/1869217581 ) but now when I look on Nios it's at 6,5%. Did they change it recently? It seems like it's a lot easier to get in master now or am I wrong?

Thanks.

6.5% seems way to high for master, but i'll let a resident ladder expert expand on that topic before I spout off foolishly.

I've been asking for weeks what the new distribution is to no avail (yet). It could be 5/10/25, or 5/15/20, or 2/8/30, or some other combination. It's not clear yet. I've had suspicions for a while that Master isn't 2% anymore and hasn't been for the better part of a year, but without new official percentiles I can't prove it, and we can't use the Nios.kr/SC2Ranks numbers as gospel either because they don't follow the participation criteria that Blizzard uses (they use a threshold of <X bonus pool to count a player as part of a league's population for the purposes of apportionment).

Q: Is there separate MMR for unranked mode, or it uses ranked MMR regardless of results in unranked?

EDIT: Also about master population - its harder in WoL to get to master. Me after 9 seasons in master Im hanging in diamond atm. Also cheese and BM is much more common in WoL now.

Some players dont even have HotS, so obviously population overall changed between games. Some players stayed in WoL, some moved to HotS. One would expect that people serious (and good) about game are playing HotS, so WoL would be getting insanely easy, yet me with very decent results from last WoL season (if I remember correctly I was at 900 pts master) got placed into diamond and im still there after about 50 games.

There is a separate MMR for unranked.

Also, I just finished reading another thread where people were posting contrary experiences to yours about Master league. I don't think it's harder or easier, it's just that the new game has shaken things up.

Ok, thanks.

To make it clear, I was talking about WoL master, not HotS. Im master in HotS, WoL is where I noticed significantly increased difficulty, BM and cheese. People are not getting demoted from master until -200 adjusted points, it always felt to me that even with -50 points you can rejoin master after placement, yet with >100 adjusted points in last season I got placed to diamond.

I currently have 700 points in gold league with like 65% win-rate, I'm wondering if I will be promoted to platinum next season when I play my placement matches? Since atm I can't continue playing for some time.

Did we ever confirm that the GM bonus pool limit is indeed 180 x 2 = 360 points with the rate changes?

I don't understand how points are awarded or removed after a game. I just lost 7 points after losing to a GM player, and only gained 5 points from beating another master player. Pretty frustrating when I'm trying to get that top 8 star.

A friend of mine looked at ladder statistics globally, and threre are 6% of players placed in masters instead of 2%... And only 12% in diamond instead of 18%... There is probably a strange bug on the blizzard side.

What about suggestion to kick inactive players from their place in whatever league they are? Would that help to have a ladder that is populated with active players and they take rank where they actually belong? For example - 3 weeks no game played - automatic leave league commits.

I'm a little confused by how the points are awarded. There's a guy in my division that has less wins and more losses than me, yet he still has more points. Did he constantly play against higher MMR players, and why can that happen, considering the sample size is fairly large?
Even then, I don't see any difference in points earned no matter who I play. Winning against a masters (I'm plat) only gave me 12 points, which is what I get in pretty much every game.

In 3 weeks you would have gained 300+ bonus pool, which should push them at least halfway down the ladder.
