I've played for a few years, nothing special, hanging in diamond current rank 22. I've seen lots of threads over the years about mmr is broken, why aren't I promoted, etc. Never paid much mind to it, ladder seemed to basically function fine.
But lately the mmr seems to REALLY not work. Getting matched against vastly different skill levels. Example today - one terran multitasks and harasses me so bad I can't even remember to put drones on gas or make overlords. Closes the deal with complex multi-drop, 8 different unit-type coordinated attack. Next game guy stays on one base, makes a ball of marines in view of overlords, walks out of single base at 12 minutes and dies to banelings, gg's. First guy apm 170, second guy about 70 (mine is about 100).
I'm not asking just because of those games. It's been like that ALL WEEK. Is this because of declining players on bnet? Am I just imagining it?
I don't have a perfect answer but I wonder what times you are playing and what server you're on. I imagine sometimes there are so few players that the matchmaking system keeps expanding its boundaries as far as what's an acceptable MMR range. I'm not sure if this actually happens.
Also, if you are playing people in diamond, the skill level fluctuates because MMR doesn't necessarily = current skill. MMR decay could mean you're facing ex-GM's in diamond, or people newly promoted into diamond.

We're in the process of verifying and testing the changes before pushing them live. The adjustment could go live as early as next week, but it will depend on when everything is completed. We'll provide an update once the timeline for deployment gets locked down.
We've done league distribution adjustments in the past. These adjustments look to help get the various league percentages closer to the target values for Heart of the Swarm. Usually you'll see a flurry of promotions after this is done, as players spread out a bit more and move to different leagues.
I'm currently working on messaging that will offer details the changes coming this season, next season and in the future.
(As seen in http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/16285498918?page=5 ) League fixes inbound are nice.
I can also say that the MMR search range does not widen beyond a certain point. I'm master in WoL 4v4, which is an extraordinarily dead gametype now and I left a search running for more than 300 minutes over the summer without any games found. I've had similar experiences leaving it running for 45 minutes+ before - if the search radius widened I would have found matches, since unranked wol 4v4 searches take about ~5 minutes at gold league and I get matches similarly fast on other accounts in WoL 4v4.
The only fix I found for this is to just play 4v4 with someone who is lower ranked, which lowers the average team MMR and allows a game to be found. Of course this only works for team games.

There's more coming than just that, I'm happy to say. I'm cautiously optimistic and while I don't know the full extent of it, what I do know should be welcome news.
Also that is interesting to note about the 300-minute 4v4 queue for WoL Master, that's a quality data point. Thanks for mentioning it. What it means is that the system will not just "settle" for literally anyone who is around. If there are only 2 players queued up and they're beyond each others' max search range, they'll never play each other. Good stuff.

Oops, never mind. My comment was mistaken.

I don't think it necessarily means this. It could just be that the lower ranked players never have their search range get that high because they've already found a game with players closer in rank.

Was there a change in ladder, perhaps only related to team games? Last season we barely crambled to finally break platinum, this season we were placed straight to platinum (usually we get a league less than last season and then get promoted later) and got to diamond very shortly. I don't believe we got that much better and the APMs of people we meet are still the same (I know it's not popular, but APM is a relatively good indicator of skill in the lower leagues, where it varies a lot).

If im getting diamonds occasionally in ladder, and im gold, does that mean promotion is close?

Does anyone heard something about the ladder revamp now? We got the 2nd season next week of lotv and no announcements yet....dont tell they need more time like 10 weeks for 2-3 patch note fixes

From today's community update:
+ Show Spoiler +Wait Time Issue at the Top of the Ladder
There was an issue where the highest skill level players were getting a higher frequency of uneven matches, and we are hoping to put out a solution very soon to increase match quality by giving these players more time to find ideal opponents in the queue. This will be addressed with the season roll on February 1.
League Boundary Distribution Update
We made some minor adjustments to Bronze and Silver leagues to maintain our previous percentages. These adjustments are also planned to be addressed with the season roll on February 1.
Leave League Bug
This turned out to not to be a universal issue, but we have confirmed that under certain circumstances leaving league can produce unintended matchmaking behavior. We have already mitigated various edge cases that led to this in recent hotfixes, and we expect further improvements moving forward.
(... ) Ladder Improvements
The ladder changes we presented at BlizzCon continue to evolve. We are hoping to be able to upgrade the ladder early in the second half of the year.

Guys, is it just me or is the MMR all over the place? I hit a bad streak of losses so the system started to match me against players from the lower league (gold vs. plat), which is understandable. Soon after I had a nice winning streak and everything went back to normal (plat vs. plat every game).
Here's where things started getting weird. My opponents in the last 5 games were: platinum, platinum, gold, diamond, master. Nothing changed in my league, I'm still platinum. That's a three-league difference in the span of three games.
Anyone else experienced this?

did you check the master's match history? was he playing ranked?

The game doesn't look any different from his other games. How can I tell if it was ranked or unranked?
EDIT: Nevermind, I just noticed he was offfracing. So it must have been unranked.

You can tell when a player is playing unranked if their match history shows a win that didn't earn any points (it either means unranked or a placement match). If they lost, it's a little harder to tell because bonus pool absorbs point loss, but if you see that they had a string of games where they would have used up all their bonus pool followed by a game with no point loss, that would be an unranked game.
So, to use a match history example (reverse chronological order): Win (+11) Win <-- This was unranked Win (+10) Loss (-10) Loss <-- This was unranked Loss (-14) Loss (-12) Win (+13) Loss (-11)
The timestamps matter, too. For that "unranked loss" example in the match history above, if that game happened to be 8+ hours after the previous game, then it's possible the player would have earned enough bonus pool over that time for that loss to be absorbed if it were ranked.

Has anyone ever fully reverse engineered the MMR calculation from SC2 bnet?
Like, given 2 players' pre match MMR and enough assumptions to eliminate complexity (both players 0 bonus pool, both active players with recent matches within the hour) could we determine the MMR gains/losses they would get from a ladder match?
