I have the feeling that HOTS takes into consideration, at least to some extent, the MMR from WOL. I was master in WOL for like 2 years (never got demoted). Then in HOTS I won 4 placement matches and lost 1, getting placed in platinum. I got promoted to diamond just after 4 or 5 games. And then I got promoted to Master with a record of 17 wins - 8 losses. Isn't that very few games to get to master if the MMR was fresh?
My friend was diamond in WOL for a pretty long time, got placed in gold in HOTS and rapidly promoted to platinum. He has a similar record than mine I think, but he stabilized in diamond.
My guess is the system is prone to get you to a level similar where you were in WOL.

Nice, the league leave button seems to work as expected. Been playing ranked wol games on an account that's atrophied to mid-diamond and left the ladder each time to try to directly place into masters. After a number of games, finally placed into masters directly from placement. Not sure if, in the end, its easier to place in a higher division by staying in your league vs. repeatedly playing your placement match. But at least it's good to know first-hand that it's possible.

I don't know if it belongs to this thread. I just found out something that you guys certainly already know, but people playing unraked games can get matched with people playing ranked, wich I think is completely retarded because of the fact that when a player plays unranked games, there's a chance he won't play his usual style and try out new strategies instead, hence failing more than he would when playing ladder games.
A player who only plays ladder games and say, meets 60% of players playing unranked games will have a higher rank than a same skilled ladder player who meets 40% of players playing unranked.
Imo, this breaks the ladder system and Blizzard should set up different matchmaking pools for both ranked and unranked matches.

Never gonna happen, the entire point why Blizzard didn't implement any matchmaking other then ranked in WoL is that it cuts into ladder player pool. Also, your unranked MMR only equals your ranked MMR for the first unranked match, after that they develop on their own. So if you ladder, you should still have about a 50% win chance against your opponents.

It feels like it a little, but my friend has a much better record than me(20-5) vs (18-8), and was ranked higher than me in WoL is only diamond, whereas I'm in masters. However, one thing I did notice was that I ranked up really quick, jumped from plat to masters within 3 games. 12-8 started a win streak 16-8 got to diamond 18-8 got to masters, but it could've been that the winstreak shot my MMR through the roof or something.

This season it was at ~2:30 AM EST for NA.

Question : You used to drop out of grandmasters after 2 weeks of inactivity, because the bonus pool IIRC was 90 per week. Is it now the same or you drop out in a single week of not spending BP?

I adjusted the ejection value to 360 since that's probably what it is, but Blizzard hasn't confirmed anything.

The placement matches are really weird. I went 5-0 and placed in Silver. I immediately left the league and started playing more placement matches. I guess it will eventually give me the chance to play higher ranked players and place into Plat/Diamond if I keep winning placement matches.

I played 3 completely new players first an won and lost to a former diamond and a former masters player in my 5 matches. To me it seems like there is no mmr taken over from WoL, contrary to some other posts here.

Is there any way to know for certain? I leave on a trip and wont be able to play for 7 days, and this is the 1st time i get GM i would hate to lose it because of that

I had a friend who finished WOL in platinum league. He played his placement matches, went 3-2, and was placed in silver at the start for HOTS. He won his next game and he was promoted to Gold. He then won an additional game and was promoted to Platinum. I have never seen back to back promotions like that.
The WOL ladder is even goofier now. GM league is only like 50% full. I finished last season in WOL as a Top 8 platinum. I destroyed the kid I faced in this season's placement match and I was placed in... Gold?? WTF! All of my opponents were gold at this time. I played about 6 games (won 5), and was promoted to platinum and have been facing diamond level players.
I really don't put much stock in my league or MMR (particularly since the level of competitions varies significantly depending on the time of day I play, there are truly leagues within leagues based on whether I play normal afternoon early evening hours or in the middle of the night), but the ladder has been acting particularly strange lately.
Hopefully both sides, WOL and HOTS, will be addressed and stabilize.

Unless Blizzard confirms it, it's unlikely that we'd certainly know, no.

Can unranked people play ranked people?
|
Yes, I have played against ranked as unranked, I verified it was a ranked game for my opponent as he did receive points for his win against me.

I don't have any way to verify, but I'm pretty sure I was able to get master's within 25 games on a brand new account when I played WoL (last time I played was Nov. '11). So that's consistent with a MMR reset.

Why don't we lose points for ladder losses any more? Does that mean that having the same amount of wins as someone else will guarantee that your point total is equal? So someone with a low win % could have the same point total as someone with a higher win %?
