Ever since the new patch, I've been stuck in gold league despite having long win streaks against gold players. I just never get matched against higher level players. Before the patch, I was playing against plats/golds in relatively equal amounts, and since the patch I was stuck in the number one spot in gold. I decided to screw this, and used the leave league button, played 5 placement matches, won them all, and got placed into SILVER. What. The. Actual.... Anyone got an idea?

Your league lags behind your MMR in indicating where you stand. When you hit the "leave league" button and place again, it places you in the league that corresponds to your current MMR, so it's a way to get rid of that lag and get into the corresponding league immediately. If you were playing weaker Gold players who were not yet demoted, or if your win streaks were punctuated by losing against Silver league players, you'd place into Silver after you hit the button. I guess I'd say that it's not a good idea to hit the button unless you're really ready to see where you stand today.

Always the same level of players, rank 20-1 gold players. Because of the way bonus pool works and because a lot of players are inactive, you'd see the entire range of gold players between ranks 1 and 20. If you'd like to share your character name, code, and region, it might be possible to have a look at your history and see if it's possible to discern what was going on. You can PM me if you don't want to post that here.

I won 4, the 4th was against a platinum player, and the 5th against a diamond player. I lost to the diamond, but again got placed in silver. What is going on? :<

What is going on? :< After your latest PM to me I thought about this a bit, and I wonder if it's just an issue of the fact that hitting that "leave league" button doesn't zero out your MMR? I mean, if you have a long play history that puts you firmly in the Silver range, the fact that you win a match against a platinum player doesn't do much to change that MMR, because you need a lot of wins against higher-rated players to move your MMR substantially. As for why you'd be playing frequently against players with higher ratings, if you tended to play during off-hours for EU, maybe you're just getting poor matches? Or, something might be broken, it's happened before. Maybe if you post something on the bug report forum, be very clear about what's going on, and if you get lucky someone might look at the question and either give you an answer or fix it?

Before the patch I remember the match making being much more volatile, getting plats, then gold, then diamond, then silver... What's the point of doing a placement match against bronze, silver, gold, plat and diamond, only to be placed at silver regardless of the results? But yeah, I guess I should post at the bug report forum. Was hoping someone encountered something similar and might have an idea.

Those first 5 placement matches do have a bigger impact, but if you're starting from wherever the default is, then maybe that makes sense. Also, you have to be sure their league icons accurately reflected their MMR at the time of the match (were they unranked/placement games for the opponent? etc).

If MMR isn't wiped across hitting that button, then the actual placement game you play will probably have a minimal effect, however. You would place in a new league if you had been on the way there before and the "stickiness" of league promotions and demotions had been preventing your reassignment into the new league.

Although, initial placement is conservative so it may place you a league or half a league or whatever below where it thinks you actually should be. This would fit with the players who have been in one league for a long long time and then left league -> new placement and found themselves a league lower. Seems like in order to "force" a promotion you actually have to be a couple of leagues higher than your current league.

In a number of games yesterday, I met enough plat+ players on the way down and enough bronze players on the way up that it's obvious that the ladder's pretty rough right now in terms of MMR, which means it was certainly fully reset.

Looks like it's 104 for sub-Master and 180 for Master, exactly double what it was before. Made the necessary edits for Heart of the Swarm compatibility.
