funnily enough barca also has the best midfield 3 ever imo, being the obvious busquets/iniesta/xavi trio. rm easily takes 2nd with kroos/modric/casemiro. cant think of any other midfield 3 that competes against these two. then again, 3 in midfield has only been the trend for 1 generation of players. For top 3 front I would definitely put Liverpools Salah, Mane, Firminho ahead of ManU. salah, mane and firmino over rooney tevez cr7? yeah no way But Liverpool peaked at an incredible level. The star was van Dijk, but these three put fear into the opposing teams. That team definitely deserves an all-time top-10 club team spot. 2011/12 Barça (73 Messi goals and the treble) is the obvious top choice. Triple CL-winning Real, 2015 Barça 2019/20Liverpool Anything before 2008. My knowledge of the teams before 2010 is not that good, but I'm very interested in your rankings of the top 10 club teams of all time. This hyper focus on front 3 was fun for comparing them to MSN, but doesn't really hold up if you go back in time. Arsenal's Invincibles was an amazing team, but had a front two: Henry + Bergkamp. 1995 Ajax was stellar, but it was a very attack oriented team. You can't really say it was the front 3 of Kanu, Litmanen and George, when a lot of the threat came from Overmars, and Kluivert was a supersub who came up from the youth and had his breakthrough season. Similarly, Bayern was amazing in the Robbery era, but you wouldn't say the front 3 of Robben - Gomez - Ribery is in the greatest forward 3s, although I'd rank Robbery as one of the greatest football duets of all time.
So true. An attacking trident is a modern phenomenon due to teams tinkering with funky formations like 4-3-2-1. Traditionally, most teams play 4-4-2 with the classic striker partnership. Especially for good ol English football. Cole/Yorke, Shearer/Sutton, Fowler/Collymore, etc. But how times have changed since 2000. Teams started tinkering with false nines, diamond 4-4-2 (which gradually incorporated an advanced CM into the trident), etc until the lone striker became the norm. The only notable striker partnership in past few years is Kane/Son.
I still do feel that football is dynamic enough that meta evolves like a tide. There's no perfect formation. Every setup has pros and cons. I'm waiting for the comeback of 4-4-2 and striking duo to somehow unlock the current meta of high/mid block pressing deployed by top teams. One recent example bucking the trend is Inter Milan sticking to a striking duo regardless of opposition (even against Man City): Martinez + Dzeko/Lukaku. There are some articles written about the brilliancy of Simone Inzaghi's counter-meta tactics.

Fluminense seems to be making some waves with their tactics, seemingly revolving around extremely fluid formations and overcrowding areas near the ball, and also the revival of a riquelme style playmaker. I'm seeing the manager suggested for the Brazil job, could be exciting!

Matt Walsh calls himself a "theocratic fascist". I don't think this thread is the right place to discuss him, however. If you are interested, feel free to send me a message and maybe direct me to a fitting thread.
In other news, Gündogan moves to Barça, and Havertz to Arsenal is nearly done as well. Tonali from Milan to Newcastle, and some more spicy news about Chelsea and Saudi Arabia: Apparently the Saudi state fund has invested money in Clearlake Capital, the owner of Chelsea. Clearlake Capital is managing assets for the Saudi state fund. The Saudi state fund is heavily invested not only in Newcastle but also in the four Saudi clubs, Al-Ittihad, Al-Nasr, Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli, that keep hiring players for obscene amounts. N'golo Kanté is already on the move to champion Al-Ittihad; Hakim Ziyech is apparently being courted by Al-Nasr; and most recently, Al-Hilal is said to be luring Kalidou Koulibaly and Al-Ahly Edouard Mendy. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has long been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia as well. The spicy part is that the hiring and transfer fees from Saudi Arabia help Chelsea tremendously by lowering their wages and increasing their earnings. To my knowledge, this doesn't break any rules, but it feels sketchy.

Chelsea made some bad business decisions last season. Many, including me, hoped that they would face consequences for that. It turns out that the Saudi transfers and, to be fair, some others, like Havertz to Arsenal, made it possible for Chelsea to keep on spending without breaking any of the financial rules. It doesn't feel fair.
Bale firing shots at Messi
Bale says Messi will enjoy MLS because losing has ‘no consequence’ there
Gareth Bale believes Lionel Messi will enjoy life away from the crucible of European and international football when he starts his new career in MLS.
The World Cup winner is scheduled to make his debut for his new club, Inter Miami, on 21 July. And while his imminent arrival has generated plenty of interest in the US, Bale believes the pressure will be negligible compared to Messi’s experience playing for Barcelona, Paris St-Germain and Argentina.
MLS has long been derided by many as a “retirement league” where aging European stars go for one final payday. The league and teams have changed that narrative as younger, homegrown talent has become more prominent but Bale, who ended his career with LAFC and played for Real Madrid in La Liga, suggested the 35-year-old Messi would find MLS a relatively comfortable experience.

Players hunting the ball in close packs (like a bunch of velociraptors!) instead of keeping to fixed zones. Playing narrow down the centre or just one wing instead of spreading players all over the pitch to dominate space.

Great video; thank you. I bookmarked the channel. The style is interesting, but more important is the idea of using a style, that fits the players.

Source What does Saudi have to do with it? Ziyech is going there for 8 million, he was going to PSG in january but paperwork failed. Kante went to Saudi on a free as they offered him 3 year deal and we offered him 12 months plus a further 12 months i think. Mendy is going there who is an out of choice keeper who 18 months ago was part of the best defensive team the champions league ever saw when we won it under tuchel, again he is going for less than £15 million. Khoulabily is the only one who is going for a decent amount at around £18 million i believe the figure is?
How is that a problem and no one cared when it was China buying Oscar for £60 million from us lol, or Arsenal buying Jorginho for 10 million, now buying Kai for £65 million and Yanited about to buy Mount for £65 million too. Oh and Kovacic to City for £30 million, they are funding our transfers not Saudi.
People also need to remember when Todd and his americans came in, we had 0 debt, to obide by FFP all we needed to do was generate £100 million in sales, we were always going to do that as we have a squad of 31....Plus the £65 million for Mount is "pure profit" as he a youth prospect.

Because they are investors and pay above market prices for the players. This is a kind of hidden sponsorship. Chelsea, of course, has a history of accepting questionable money. However, you are right, that these transfers are within the rules, and probably all of these players could have found other clubs. But the question is how many of them would actually have accepted lower salaries, which was likely as their market value dropped.

What hidden sponsorship? They do not own a single piece of Chelsea and never will? The Saudis have some money in the investment company clearlake capital which is a $60 billion investment fund that has a majority stake in Chelsea, so if that is us being owned by Saudis then i have no defense lol.
In terms of those players, like i said Ziyech was off to PSG, Khoulabily had an offer from Inter, Kante would have stayed with us and Mendy again he had offers in Italy and France. Now of course your right on them having bigger offers in terms of wages, for sure and im very happy Kante gets this opportunity because he deserves it! But that isn't anything to do with us, that is unfair!
I don't mind being hated when it justified but we have USA backed consortium money now and before that we had Roman Abramovich, who until Russia invaded Ukraine was not a problem, but them became a problem....
|
Yes, it makes no sense. The PIF is 650 billion USD investment fund. Their stake into Chelsea via Clearlake is so small it's a rounding error in their portfolio. And it begs the question why they'd do this for Chelsea but not Newcastle since they directly own Newcastle.
|
Fairly sure according to UEFA rules you can't be an owner of two teams in the same country IIRC
|
i think the rule is you cant be the owner of multiple clubs playing in the same competition

They changed because of the red bull model now as both Salzburg and Leipzig were able to compete in the champs league a couple seasons ago.
I am all for that rule though, don't like this multiple club model. Chelsea owners just bought Strasburg and are about to do a deal to buy Rio Ave in Portugal as well.

So will this be the year Everton either go Bankrupt, or unable to avoid regulation... or both. It seems the ship is sinking but nobody wants to acknowledge the reality.
