With the way American sports leagues' player drafts and salary caps work, they are designed for parity. Most teams tend to see regression to the mean. So I don't think that really makes sense, unless they change it to a system that promotes more of a permanent pecking order. Though I agree with the suggestion that the MLS should attempt to follow the model of most global football leagues.

Leave the American franchise based concept for the purely American sports, and 'play ball' with the rest of the world in football. They would 'fit in' better that way. It sounds great in theory, however, you've got to realize that the "original" MLS teams (and those that have come in recently) have dumped literally millions of dollars per team just to get the league up and running. Right now, if you want to enter the MLS as a new expansion team you have to fit a big checklist. This includes coughing up $10 million (I believe) to the league. This is because the original teams started with virtually no support, and just on the hopes and dreams of being successful. Now if we introduce promotion and relegation, you've got to realize that these teams have no history. So if a current MLS team gets relegated, their support will dwindle significantly. This would more than likely lead to financial ruin. This is the main reason that promotion and relegation is not used in America. If we had started our leagues like most other leagues in the world, promotion and relegation would be fine. Another knock on promotion and relegation is that it was really only invented because a lot of teams wanted to be in the top league while there were so many spots in said league. While I'm certain that many of the NASL/USL teams would love to be in the MLS, they just don't have the financial backing to do so. Edit: Although it must be said that the movement away from the drafting system (slightly, it still exists but isn't as important) and towards the youth academies is a step in the "right direction."

In terms of the cost, yes it is quite high when you are in a huge country but it seems to be done in Russia and Brazil so it must be possible. Perhaps the cost to join the 'second' division would be cheaper. By the way aren't there already lower divisions in America, just not connected to MLS? What really should be done is a total relaxation on wages and absolutely no draft system at all. Don't get me wrong, I think the system is excellent for the purely American sports, but it doesn't fit in with the outside countries.

Sorry for the AFKness ![]() Thursday i stayed away from the forum due to Chelsea vs Real Madrid was awaiting me at home recorded, then after we got Ronaldo'd i didn't feel like coming on! However, after reading the last few pages i didn't seem to miss much xD Im glad Chelsea lost in a way because now Mourinho can show them his tough side and they can get better. We did get well and truly beaten though. Ronaldo was just NOT marked and Ivanovic showed why he shouldn't be a RB defending vs a pacey winger! Loving Van Ginkel though, damn son he could become VanBommel like. Runs around the pitch makes good tackles and plays the ball off simply, isn't affraid of bomming forward either.

I really hoped he would finally break through this year, but it appears that his transfer was a bad investment for Gladbach.
