Right now I can't do it at all, lol. I played basketball for about 4 hours last night, and I am really sore in both legs. But I'll try doing that in a day or so and see what happens.

overpronation would cause the tibia to medially rotate in weight bearing and thus shorten the popliteus right? wear pattern seems like a good fit for it

+ Show Spoiler +

1. Google a pic and mark where it hurts.
[image loading] [image loading]

2. What exercises hurt? Which shoulder articulations hurt? Make sure you check both with passive motion and resistive/active motion.
it happened during running, i might have exagerated a bit the miles

3. What type of pain is it? Burning? Ache? Tingling? Sharp?
ache

4. What would you rate the pain at on a 0/10 scale? 0 being no pain, 10 being go to the emergency room.
4

5. Acute or chronic (chronic more than ~6-8 weeks)? What date was onset? How has the pain improved since the initial injury?
i think it happened somewhere around 5th september so it is almost 2 months now

6. Have you been training through pain? If so, how long?
i trained rarely, like 4-5 times in those 2 months

7. How deep is the pain? Is it more superficial tissues? Or does it seem to be more inside or around the joint? Describe it.
it is around my knee joint mostly, and sometimes it goes down to my feet but not very often.

8. What have you been doing for recovery purposes?
nothing, i thought it would be nice to train on lower tempo but then i saw it wasnt a good idea so i stopped running

9. What seems to help? What seems to make it worse? Is it constant? Does it increase/decrease with certain activities?
it seems to be completely gone when i wake up, and seems to repeat when i start walking/running. especially in the evenings it starts to show itself even on 5-10 mins walking (i am walking from shuttle to home)

10. Check the tissue quality of the surrounding muscles. Which ones are tight? Which ones are tender? Is there any swelling?
no swelling at all, back of my knee tissue seems to be a bit tighter than the other one.

11. How does it feel after exercise (if any)? How does it feel at the beginning of the day? How about the end of the day?
after and during exercise it hurts sometimes it hurts so much that i cant move my knee (bend it, move it). at the beginning of the day when i wake up it feels good no pain nothing at all. at the end of the day if i walk even short distances pain comes back

12. Any previous injury history?
nothing in that area as far as i recall

13. How's your posture?
seems to be ok, nothing wrong

14. What is your current workout routine for that bodypart? Do you play any sports?
i dont play any sports, all i did was running 4 days a week but i stopped after the injury happened.

15. Any other information I should be aware of or that comes to mind that may help?
well my routine was 8k, 5k, 8k consecutive days then 1 day break and then long run which is 10k or 11k. i had a break for like 1 week or so then i started again. i might have pushed a bit hard and i might have twisted my knee though i am not sure.

Okay, it sounds like it could be a direct musculotendinous problem (mainly because of the activities that aggravate it) , the structures you have around there to be worried about are

+ Show Spoiler +

gastrocnemius - big calf muscle, has two 'heads'

soleus - smaller deeper calf muscle

hamstrings - run from the base of your pelvis to behind your knee

try this stretch with a bias to either side (ie when you bring your leg back pull back at an angle across your body)

popliteus - twists your tibia (shin bone) inwards on your femur (thigh bone) when your knee is bent. try moving it the opposite direction.

try some of these stretches and see if you can isolate pain in any particular movement

Got my calve injured, yesterday during swimming at the kickoff from my last lap I felt an intense pain in my calve and had a hard time using it. First thought it was some weird cramp but it still hurts when walking, much less when I elevate the heel of my left heel (injured leg) and walk like an idiot. I feel a small bump on that muscle as well.

Not sure about the translation, however the literal translation from Dutch to English would be whiplash but I associate that with neckpain. Didn't see a doctor so I hope my amateur diagnosis is wrong! Hopefully this is over soon, don't want to stop training for weeks

you should try the gastrocnemius vs soleus stretches i posted just above to see if you can differentiate between the two (but it does sound like a gastroc thing). best thing you can do right now is rest over the next 48-72 hrs and ice it for 15-20 minutes a few times a day (whatever you have time for). a moderate grade muscle tear can leave a noticeable deformation. certainly any stress on the muscle in that first 2-3 days around the injury isnt going to help.

Likely a popliteus tightness. I aleady answered this joint in another post which is here:

I've been having a very annoying and painful problem after running. Here goes.

1. Google a pic and mark where it hurts.
I tried, but it's kind of hard to show in a picture.....it's kind of weird. It's right behind my knee, and kind of vertically extended a couple inches above and below my knee in a straight line almost, with the center being the very back of the knee. It's in between the bone and the outer skin of the back of my knee.

+ Show Spoiler +
2. What exercises hurt?
Things like climbing stairs really tweak it. Running obviously hurts, and just walking is kind of painful as well. Passively, nothing much I do can make it hurt more. At rest it's just a really dull throb regardless of position.

3. What type of pain is it? Burning? Ache? Tingling? Sharp?

Ache for sure. When climbing stairs it moves to more of a burn.

4. What would you rate the pain at on a 0/10 scale? 0 being no pain, 10 being go to the emergency room.

Probably around a 5. Not crippling in any way, but definitely uncomfortable, and i can't run on it.

5. Acute or chronic (chronic more than ~6-8 weeks)? What date was onset? How has the pain improved since the initial injury?

Chronic I guess. Started as soon as I started upping my mileage past the 5 mile mark(per run). I run, it hurts, so I do nothing for a few days. Pain subsides. A couple days later I run again. Repeat.

6. Have you been training through pain? If so, how long?
No.

7. How deep is the pain? Is it more superficial tissues? Or does it seem to be more inside or around the joint? Describe it.
Definitely outside the joint. It really feels like a hyper-extension of the knee, but extending the knee causes no additional pain. It kind of feels like a pulled hammy....but behind my knee, lol.

8. What have you been doing for recovery purposes?

A little ice and rest.

9. What seems to help? What seems to make it worse? Is it constant? Does it increase/decrease with certain activities?
Running always brings it out, but short runs, or much slower runs cause me no problems.

10. Check the tissue quality of the surrounding muscles. Which ones are tight? Which ones are tender? Is there any swelling?
None, really. It's a localized pain, and neither my calves or thighs feel tender/tight/swollen/etc.

11. How does it feel after exercise (if any)? How does it feel at the beginning of the day? How about the end of the day?
Light exercise(walking) helps it, I think, and it starts subsiding after a couple of days.

12. Any previous injury history?
None.

13. How's your posture?

N/A I would think, unless it's just poor running technique.

14. What is your current workout routine for that bodypart? Do you play any sports?

All sports, lol, but none aggrevate the problem really.

15. Any other information I should be aware of or that comes to mind that may help?
I got new shoes a few weeks ago, but I kind of had the problem starting already.

I would think it's likely a very tight popliteus.

Sit down in a chair and cross your leg:

http://dogonlanguages.org/photos/012_01_sit_chair_one_leg_crossed_JH.jpg

And then try to dig into your popliteus and loosen it up. Google popliteus muscle to accurately get it's location if you're having issues.

Also, do all of the stretching which emjay said to do. That will probably help as well

Soleus stretch seems alright, tried the gastrocnemius one but when im getting slightly in that position it already starts to hurt so didnt really attempt it.

I'm feeling a severe loss of grip strength. It is like when you wake up in the middle of the night, or very early in the morning, and your hands have no strength. Your hands feel kind of clumsy and weak. That is how it feels all day.

A kind of tingling, uncomfortable feeling that forces me to let go of my grip after a while. Makes it very hard to hold a pencil.

0 when not using hands, 1-2 when using hands.

Started a few days ago.

I do cross country, but that doesn't really use my wrists.

Hard to describe, not exactly a numb feeling but a weakness in my entire hand.

No swelling.

Don't exercise my hands that much, but gripping a pencil for a while makes my hands feel exhausted and weak.

Hurt my right wrist a while ago, but this is in both hands.

Maybe pain is caused by using computer keyboard?

I play violin daily, but that doesn't use very much strength in the hands.

http://classes.kumc.edu/sah/resources/handkines/nerves/nerve.htm does the area you feel pins/needles/numbness in match with one of these areas? also does it hurt at night? you described waking up at night but weren't really clear whether it happens to you or not because of this

most common is carpal tunnel syndrome (median nerve compression), but there are other nerve entrapments.

try these two tests

edit - your picture actually looks like radial nerve distribution but its not quite clear

@eshlow, i think ive slipped my SI joint. I know you had a great writeup on it a while back when decaf was having problems with his, but im at a loss for how to find it. Tips?

Also, i'm on my phone now but i can describe the general problem and do a better writeup this afternoon.

Three days ago i woke up with shooting pains thhrough the top if my foot, any time i put pressure on the ball of the foot. I tried to i did ice, anti inflams, and a little comoression too but continued to practice on it. Stayed the same for the next day. That night i stood up out of a chair and noticed my hip felt "funny" like it had cme forwaprd out of place. This has happened before and usually goes awapy in a few hours oe apfter sleeping. In the morning i woke up with the same footpain (and by now i am limping a bit which i suppose created the problem in the firstp place) and experiencing mild radiating pain in the lateral side of my left knee (my left knee has never had problems, my right is bad) and the front of my hip socket. I continue thriugh my day, skipping oractice AND my lift, but it only gets worse.

This morning i woke up with pain in the same places (top of foot, outside of knee, front of hip) that i would rate a four. It affects my walking but unless i need to run, it isnt a "grit my teeth and suffer." In addition, the bottom of my foot has gone to pins and needles or numbness back and forth for an hour and a half now.

There is definitely somehig out of place in my hip, and i cant think of anything else that has bothered me in the last few days. I will clean this post up and attach pictures when i get to a pc.

Maybe - there was a post back in the tlhf superthread that i remember, but it's irrelevant now.

Oddly enough, while dissecting the hamstring and psoas complex on my cat today, i sat back in my chair to take a breath, moved my thigh just perfectly, heard a pop and my whole leg went numb. Not an "its asleep" but rather a "no feeling". It still holds my weight. Got up and walked around, there is no more limp. My legs dont feel like one is longer than the other anymore. Yay!

Go and see a doctor. It sounds like a tendosynovitys (inflammation of the tendon) or a myositis (inflammation of the muscle), but since you have it in both hands, I'm a bit more concerned than I'd be if it was just one of them.

You say that you're spending time at the computer and playing the violin daily. That means, you're performing a monotonous movement. Judging from what I know and what I hope this picture will help you understand, this is what happens:

The tendons of the hand's extensoric muscles pass under the dorsal carpal ligament. In addition, they do some crossing on their own.

By performing certain movements when playing the violin, you create a friction between the ligament and the tendons and / or within the tendons. The movement performed when typing on the keyboard is - from a medical point of view - a mere variation of the violin - movement. This subsequently means that the friction continues. What then happens is an inflammation, for the muscles and tendons are permanently stressed and react to that (how exactly is on wiki, just search for "Inflammation", would be to much medical blah here).

In short: the inflammation can't go anywhere since the hand is a very tight construction and the process just repeats itself and adds up all the time.

Why I'm telling you to see a doctor: it's in both hands. This could be a hint to a set of different diseases, but to speculate about anything is out of my competence and makes absolutely no sense online. A neurologist should be the right address, but even if you get an appointment with one later on you should at least have your family doctor check your blood for any signs of inflammation and give you some general advice.

Get well soon!

^^ I would agree with this.

Generally, with numbness, loss of sensation, weakness.... it's a nerve issue. Something is getting trapped somewhere.

Need to see a orthopedic doc and possibly get a referral to physical therapy for that. If you wait too long you may need surgery and other costly things like that.

Link is in the OP. It's the low back article.

That does sound like a hip/SI issue referring some pain into knee and foot though.

edit: looks like you got it resolved inadvertently, haha
