1. Google a pic and mark where it hurts.
Where the black circle is.

2. What exercises hurt? Which shoulder articulations hurt? Make sure you check both with passive motion and resistive/active motion.
Chin-ups. Shoulders are fine.

3. What type of pain is it? Burning? Ache? Tingling? Sharp?
Continuous sharp pain in my neck.

4. What would you rate the pain at on a 0/10 scale? 0 being no pain, 10 being go to the emergency room.
When it's at its worst, probably 8. Hurts too much for me to function normally. Had to lie down today for a few minutes before I could tolerate the pain.

5. Acute or chronic (chronic more than ~6-8 weeks)? What date was onset? How has the pain improved since the initial injury?
Chronic. It gets worse when I push myself during chin-ups. Been hurting on and off since I started training 3 months ago.

6. Have you been training through pain? If so, how long?
Sort of, for a couple of months.

7. How deep is the pain? Is it more superficial tissues? Or does it seem to be more inside or around the joint? Describe it.
It's in my neck muscles.

8. What have you been doing for recovery purposes?
Nothing much. Pain goes away after a while.

9. What seems to help? What seems to make it worse? Is it constant? Does it increase/decrease with certain activities?
Just relaxing seems to help the pain go away. Massages seem to do nothing. Chin-ups is the only thing that makes it worse.

10. Check the tissue quality of the surrounding muscles. Which ones are tight? Which ones are tender? Is there any swelling?
It's only on the right side, left side feels fine. The muscle that connects to the back of my skull seems to be the one that hurts. Can't feel any swelling.

11. How does it feel after exercise (if any)? How does it feel at the beginning of the day? How about the end of the day?
After chin-ups it hurts like hell sometimes, other times it's just a small headache. I feel fine as long as I don't do chin-ups.

12. Any previous injury history?
Hurt my neck practicing back flips once in the same place. Was also in a car accident but I hurt my knees that time so it's probably not relevant.

13. How's your posture?
Not that great.

14. What is your current workout routine for that bodypart? Do you play any sports?
Don't work out my neck in particular I played soccer on and off but not playing any sports atm.

15. Any other information I should be aware of or that comes to mind that may help?
When I do chin-ups, my solar plexus also hurts. Similar pain as my neck but it doesn't last as long.

Are you craning your neck doing chins?

If so, change your form.

This is pretty odd though.. if it gets worse you might wanna get it checked out by a doc or PT

Sometimes. I'll keep my head neutral all the time from now on.
Do you think doing stretches and a few chin-ups at BW will help?

See what happens doing that.

The fact that only chins are aggravating it is a bit suspicious... likely some sort of form/technique issue?

I've deloaded atm but my highest work set was 42.5lb. When it hurt yesterday, I was only doing 35lb and it wasn't that hard so I find that a bit odd.

Oh, I just realized I put the weights in a backpack instead of using a chain like what most people do. Would that be bad for my neck?

Just tried 5 chin-ups at BW and it still hurt, but nowhere near as bad as last night. Been having a dull pain at 1-2 all day but it went up one step after the BW chin-ups.

Hmm.. could be an issue with the neck or thoracic outlet. Would suggest getting it checked out by a PT if it's bothering you even when you're not exercising

Will do. I'll research more on the neck/thoracic outlet and look into finding a good PT.

Hello dudes,

I've got some tendinitis (sp?) in my forearms from lifting, I had recently increased my weights and kind of shot out my forearms or something. I can do hammer curls (lifting with the weights vertical in your hands) , without any trouble.

You guys have any ideas as to how I can get rid of this, I've had it for god knows how long, and each time I think it's gone away, I go back to do a bit of lifting and it's back fairly quickly.

Thanks!
I don't always herp, but when I herp, I derp

Omfg i jarred/jammed my right middle finger pretty badly and have been RICE'ing it ever since- 15mins of ice an hour, bandaging for compression etc.

I was wondering if i could still do dips/pullups tomorrow since they are both grip intensive excercises.
i injured it on saturday and iced it saturday and today and defs tomorrow.

Keep up the great work!

dips ought to be fine, you bear the weight through the palm of your hand. Any swelling etc is going to get aggravated by increases in blood flow but i feel like pretty much anything you do in the gym will do that.

just try it and see?

Yes.

That is sore on most people though so it's not abnormal

"I often hit up my soft tissue while I am driving to and from work"
nice

looks like i got "Medial epicondylitis (inner elbow – Golfer’s elbow) which arisea from excessive pulling exercises."
+ Show Spoiler +

on saturday (just entered tuesday now) , after my lifts, i held onto two 20kg plates (one in each hand oc) to work my grip a bit. was doing 15-20s reps. i dont find it easy

on 2nd or 3rd set of this i strained a bit too hard (20s i guess) and felt blood or something weird rushing into my left arm below or around my tricep. bummer. i done one more quick set to see if there was pain but it was okay, just felt warm and i knew something was wrong

so today-ish, 2 days later, im kinda suddenly feeling a soreness on this area and it must be this golfer's elbow.

i guess i will try to ice it and rub it and i guess i should completely stop doing deadlifts for a few sessions? (and stop hanging onto 20kg plates oc). or should i try to continue as normal but stop straight away if there is a pain? (and try lighter weight if so)

your thread has lots of recommendations tbh

how long am i supposed to RICE my jarred finger for?
the swollenness is almost gone cept for the joint but it's still quite stiff and hurts little if i bend/use it too much.

Ok RICE is most effective in reducing the swelling and excess effects of inflammation in the first 24-72 hrs after injury depending on severity. But if you aggravate it, then the process is going to start again, so ice will most likely still help after a session. Just do it for 15 minutes at a time, 2 or 3 times in 24 hours at the most. I'd be surprised if you have time for more and it probably wont make a huge difference anyway.

Backround: My girlfriend starting doing stronglifts with me probably 3 months ago and has seen good gains. Now that the weight is starting to get heavier she is getting a strain on her right shoulder. Washing windows/circular motions cause pain/ I get her to answer the questions below for completeness:

1. Google a pic and mark where it hurts.

http://postimage.org/image/gf5lf9ie3/

2. What exercises hurt?
Squats, shoulder press

3. What type of pain is it? Burning? Ache? Tingling? Sharp?

Aching/sharpe

4. What would you rate the pain at on a 0/10 scale? 0 being no pain, 10 being go to the emergency room.

5

5. Acute or chronic (chronic more than ~6-8 weeks)? What date was onset? How has the pain improved since the initial injury?

1 month ago. Pain hasnt gotten any better.

6. Have you been training through pain? If so, how long?

1 month.

7. How deep is the pain? Is it more superficial tissues? Or does it seem to be more inside or around the joint? Describe it.

Inside or around the joint.

8. What have you been doing for recovery purposes?

Extra stretching.

9. What seems to help? What seems to make it worse? Is it constant? Does it increase/decrease with certain activities?

Increases pain with circular motions. No pain if not moving.

10. Check the tissue quality of the surrounding muscles. Which ones are tight? Which ones are tender? Is there any swelling?

No swelling.

11. How does it feel after exercise (if any)? How does it feel at the beginning of the day? How about the end of the day?

Worst after exercise (specifically squats) No big difference after morning or night.

12. Any previous injury history?

None.

13. How's your posture?

Average.

14. What is your current workout routine for that bodypart? Do you play any sports?

Stronglifts, and yoga.

Might be a strain rather than tendonitis TBH....

If there's pain I would definitely go with lighter weights though. Work your way back in slowly..

Hmmm, I couldn't get much out of this tbh. Not enough detail.

Could be an issue within the joint, or it could be something like impingement, or other problem.

Is it possible to get it checked out by an orthopedic doc or physical therapist so you can at least get a diagnosis?

Quick question:

My right shoulder has been incredible unstable as of late, most likely because of my old injury. When I was 15 years old I tore my sternoclavicular ligament and didn't notice it until it was too late to fix. So I just built muscle around it and it wasn't much of a trouble.

Any suggestion of shoulder exercises to keep working on keeping it nice and stable?
