I know I haven't been treated too differently (beyond a bit of surprise if I mention I have no degree) and so I doubt that they'd be looked down on, but it might present more of a problem when it comes to getting in the door in the first place. I really have no idea.

There's a huge difference in job functions and compensation between "IT" and "computer science."

Computer Science = the academic study of computer science; this is usually done in an academic setting or research institution--while usually what people study in school is "computer science" most people don't actually do this when they go to work because a lot of people aren't interested in the relatively academic aspects of the field. Software Engineering = designing and writing software; this is what people are usually referring to when they call someone a computer programmer--someone who writes code and develops software applications as their primary function. Depending on the company, the line can be blurred between IT and SE/SD, though based on overlapping functions in their roles. If your friends are working for major tech companies and making that kind of money, they're probably employed as software engineers.

Not quite a software engineer if your not designing anything and just fulfilling tickets/specs someone else defined. but def more programming oriented than IT. of course i could just be stuck up. As I said, the distinction can be a bit blurry. Plus I think companies still try to hire people into those positions as "software engineers", if only so that they're more likely to entice (over)qualified applicants, lol.
