Are you out of you collective fucking minds? Koreans have dominated the game for 9 years. Foreigners got always shat on in GSL, no matter how "great" they were while harvesting easy money in the rest of the world. Now we have multiple people crafting excuses why GSL suddenly isn't the ultimate tournament just to fit their narrative? Cmon, that is just pathetic.
Even more pathetic is trying to downplay the preparation. The difference between knowing the exact opponent for weeks and having a 16man bracket and then a week (outside home!) for another 8man is day and night. Again, this is not a "theory", this is observable for years and years as the difference between performance in GSL and elsewhere for many players (in both directions).
Serral is a great player, the best foreigner we ever had by miles. It is honestly not really his fault that the reality of the world is as it is, but he can't be "the greatest" if he doesn't play in GSL. And it is even not a fault if he doesn't go there, it's just a rational choice I think it's fair to say that he's the best player currently but he's definitely not player of the year or GOAT/Bonjwa (though I don't think anyone says that seriously?) Winning 2 weekenders in a row doesn't come close to winning 3 GSLs in a row. If he would be korean absolutely nobody would call him player of the year. Yep, I called this a month ago, Serral won Blizzcon and you re still hating and doing the mental gymnastics to try and discredit him. Blizzcon is a weekend tournament now, is it? Well, to counter-balance your load of bullshit, I would just like to highlight that GSL is a 2nd tier tournament, since it s clearly not the highest level of competition, proven by the fact that the best player isnt participating in it. Let s just call it a series of stretched out best of 3s and best of 5s, where some of the better players are preparing 2 weeks to snipe each other with map-specific bullshit builds, clearly not a good test of true skill. + Show Spoiler +(since this is the internet i feel like i have to give the disclaimer that this was satire) Sorry that I'm trying to put some reason into your blind Serral fanboyism but it is just how it is. Rogue won 3 tournaments in a row last year and most people still viewed Innovation as the player of the year. What Serral has done multiple players have done before except for the fact that he's non-korean. What Maru has done is completely unprecedented. If Serral would be korean nobody would be calling him player of the year - that's a fact. Calling me a hater doesn't change that. Interesting, the use of "unprecedented". I cant think of anything Serral did this year, that would qualify as unprecedented.... "Arguing" with you is completely pointless you're 100% detached from reality, you dont care about facts, results and the games themselves. You announced prior to Blizzcon that even if Serral would win (which you doubted) it would mean nothing. So nobody should be surprised that you keep spouting this bullshit after Serral curve-stumped the Koreans (btw the only player to not face any foreigners in their run from the ro16). Im just pointing out how you stick to your blindly held grudge against foreigners. Not sure if it stems from just a crazy amount of self-hatred that you project this way, or what exactly is the reason, i just really wanted to gloat. I was 100% right about predicting both Serral's wins and your reaction and mental gymnastics. Now, you re not the only one, there are like 2 others at TL who do exactly this, but seen your comment here just now. Okay I'm done with you - you have no arguments except calling everyone who disagree a hater. Also this You announced prior to Blizzcon that even if Serral would win (which you doubted) it would mean nothing. never happened and I said that Serral is definitely the best player in the world now but apparently you have to make up things for your narrative that everyone is a hater who doesn't think he's a bonjwa Im sorry if i'm mixing up some commenters, as i said, you and the 2 other Serral bashers are the same to me, i dont really recall who wrote exactly what. Then again, i apologize if you werent the one announcing it, sadly i cant go through your post history it would take too much time. But, while we re at it, i never thrown around the word "Bonjwa" either, so.... I claimed prior to the event, that if Serral would win blizzcon that would mean 8-9 months of undefeated run filled with trophies, which would have been unprecedented. But the very next day he dropped an online series to Neeb, so i stopped with that narrative. On paper his winstreak is incredibly impressive but he avoided the best players for a long period so it's not as impressive as it sounds. Currently he's on a 9 match winstreak against koreans which is incredibly impressive but not something that has never been done before. I'd say it's similar to Rogue's domination last year. What Maru did has never been done before which is why I still consider him player of the year

I think its just funny, how people want to discredit Serral cause he didnt face Maru. Maru won 3 GSL without facing the arguably best player in the world and nobody was like "but he didnt face Serral".

So have Serral, MVP, NesTea, soO...
In my opinion Maru has brought this all onto himself, he had the chance to show that he's the best in the world by winning GSL vs. the World and/or Blizzcon. And yet he failed. Losing is okay, happens to everyone. But the way he went out against sOs? That's not the Maru we've seen until sept.
Actually I'm happy Serral didn't face Maru. At least Stats put up a fight after beeing down 3 games.

Don't act like Serral was the best zerg in the world for the whole year, he peaked at this level only relatively recently

Hum dunno, I post my thought about it earlier but I don't feel that so special. He has the perfect conditions while the scene is not at its best to say the least, no fresh blood, a lot of retirement or "disparition" (herO, Dream, Curious, Sacsri, Rain, Parting, Life and while I forgot a lot, it's already way easier without these guys playing competitely around), no gaming house or even team for a majority of his rivals in a format which favors preparation... Even without trolling I am not really impressed.

It was amazing,i almost had forgotten how much fun it is to watch starcraft. This should draw more players towards the game. Congratz to serral, seems like a great guy as well.

It probably won't happen ever again. Look at the time it took for a 2peat to be made again

Agreed. Truth is we have two players of the year this year, and previous rules don't apply. They both break standard statistics.
Nobody can say for sure how a Bo7 between them would go. (That, by itself, also breaks the 'b' word).
What's for sure is only one is the hottest player in the world right now.

I feel like gsl advocates always dismissed him while he was constantly demonstrating a freaking hight level of play and was casually dismantling gsl champions. He might have not been successful in gsl (even if getting ro4 during bl/infest as terran is a good feat), but he is by far the terran who impressed me the most.

Serral did not drop enough maps in the entire thing to lose the finals, only lost 3 maps. What a fantastic Finnish!

People will always find excuses to strip X player of his/her achivement.. the most common are: 1. online != offline.. he would not stand a chance in offline tourney... 2. he beat Y player only because Y player wasnt in his/her peak form / ms issues ect... 3. player Y is still better.. just was unlucky.. 4. if it wasnt for cheese... 5. in long macro game he has no chance... 6. avoided YXZ player (he'd loose to them but they got eliminated by other players) 7. It's just xxxx tournament.. GLS / Blizzcon / SSL (pick one) is where the best players win. 8. it's just weekend tournament.. if XX had time to prepare he would have won. ect ect...
Funny really.
The fact is: Serral won WCS beating TOP koreans on his way.. He's the best 2018 starcraft 2 player . END OF STORY.

Statistics are hepful but it hides the specific conditions which helped maru achieving this feat. Actually soO with 4 final in a row in a more competitive scene and everyone in gaming house backed by a kespa team is a greater feat, well, that's what I think at least.
