I say we choose a trustable caster with very very good connection, make a simple website, open a paypal, donate like 1 dolar for each and let that guy restream for us the rest of the money for each month he can keep

well if you're going to offer a prize pool that's 3x Broodwar's with a far smaller viewing audience and no television channels, it only makes sense to charge for VODs and Streams to recoup your costs.

would make sense if ppl actually paid the cost. As many have pointed out, this will make the sc2 fanbase for GSL tiny to begin with, so no new and bigger sponsors will be attracted. It doesnt take to be a genius to figure out they will ultimately lose a lot more money than they will gain from a decision like this. The email is especially ridiculous. Its basically as if a company producing soap would say "hey we are running the business horribly and thus have a large debt. so in order to get back on track, were going to have to charge 20$ per piece of soap. Sry guys!". This is not how economy works ^^

yah i totally agree with this, i'm just saying i can understand why they're doing it. They decided to make a high prize pool to attract players. But then they realized they need to make money to pay for those high prize pools. So then they charge for streams.

But like you said, this could cause a vicious downward cycle where less people pay for the streams and then GOMTV is screwed with no revenue, no spectators and lots of money being spent. I guess this is where extracting royalties from OSL/MSL/Proleague come in: leech revenue from the successful league to keep your flawed league afloat.

Just overall a really shortsighted business strategy imo, really blind to externalities.

The idea of re-streaming and paying the re-streamer is extremely foolish. That will quite directly result in that person getting sued for profiting off of GOM's work.

but see i'd rather not. GOMTV is starving for revenue now, and attracting us to their forums is one way for them to get some. And I guess I'm what you could call a bit of a GOMTV hater. I loved that they hired Tasteless, I loved that they gave free VODs and had a pretty good league going for a bit, but I really think the whole altruism aspect of that company is overrated. They did what they did to try and compete in an already crowded market: their strategies were not kind-hearted ones, but creative manipulations of market niches. Good for them. But now that they're on top, where did all their coolness go?

Isnt it possible to restream and hiding ur ip/identity from GOM? Im no expert in stuff like this (guess proxy is too slow) but in my naive mind somebody skilled with this (and a fat connection probably) can hide his identity and restream stuff without much trouble. Am I wrong here?

Boo-hoo, funding the most financially straining multi-league tournament in the history of e-sports is turning out to be harder than expected... How on earth did they not see this coming? Passing the funding buck onto the fans is not the way to do it. We don't care if the prize pool is $170,000 or $150,000, it doesn't really matter to anybody but the gamers.

Furthermore the extreme discrepancy between the winnings of first and second place (I believe first place recieves something like $85,000, whereas second recieves only $25,000). If you just cut the first place prize money by $10,000 that's still EXTREMELY generous. I can't think of another tournament, ever, that had such a huge margin between 1st and 2nd place. I'm sure 1st place would be just as happy with $75,000, and then you could use the leftover to provide solid commentary to the fans without having to drain and alienate us.

So true, something simple like reducing the prize pool by $10,000 should have been enough to cover the costs of streaming.

isn't it obvious why their prize pool is so high? They're competing for BW players and their audience, and it's kinda cute really how similar it is to poker. If the 40,000 dollar prize for BW players is the big blind, GomTV is the mid-position player early game with the premium hand and is raising the bet to 3x or 4x the big blind.

Except BW is holding a Full House while GomTV is holding pair 2s.

well let's say there's 8 "must-see" events per tournament, and 12 tournaments per year. wouldn't it be more economical for the viewers to just pay for their own streams then pay a dollar * 96 to watch someone restream? Plus the revenue potential for that streamer (let's guesstimate 5,000ish viewers per "must-see" event) is kinda disgusting.

Wow..that's.. really sad. GomTV's managed to shoot the golden goose before it even laid a egg. Geeze. Excuse me while I go yell at Blizzard to smack Gomtv around because I am pretty damn sure this isn't what they meant by growing esports in Korea.

Well if we're talking early game, I'd say it's more like BW's got QQ while GomTV has QK suited (more future possibilities ^_^). I dono if i'd play that hand though, not early on.. but I'm no poker expert so i'll stfu now before i look stupid

I'm pretty sure a lot of people already said this (haven't read the whole thread), but GOMTV, you would make a ton more money by making at least the VODs free then putting advertisements in the VODs: Youtube-style or an actual ad before and/or after the VOD. I'm sorry to say but if you stick to the paid VOD model I would watch the matches on free online video sites or download the torrents of the matches. (I'm also going to post this on your site when I get back home.)

Isn't that a bit too harsh? I mean give them time to figure out some official statements? Why would they want to reply to all the threads that are 100% identical?

It is better to come out with some official thread about the whole deal than just going and replying to the same shit over and over.

Lol, an altruistic company. That's a good one, you oxymoron. Every company that's not a non-profit organization is in it to make money. I would hate to see their flawed business model be the downfall of SC2 as an E-sport in Korea. The only way to promote change is to allow your voice to be heard, and the best way to do that is to post on their forums. The more they realize how few people are actually willing to pay for the stream, the more likely they will be to change their fee-based strategy. And trust me, you posting on their forums is not going to magically erase their debt.
