It's more that double elim means much longer tournament, which may or may not be good. They have been super adamant about making sure a Western team gets reasonably deep, which makes sense. This leads to teh stupid byes, but if nothing else, S3 showed us that EU and to a lesser extent NA really aren't as behind as people initially thought.

Unlike western countries, gaming is widely accepted among the youth and the chinese are really warming up to esports. Dota 2 and LOL are neck to neck in terms of popularity in China. A win for Royal China could have been huge for RIOT. I've seen a lot of people saying that they almost exclusively saw people playing League when they visited china, so not sure if it's really neck to neck anymore. Ofc those were just a few personal experiences.

They have decent infrastructure which is one of the driving factor behind Korean success and also vast reservoir of potential talents to draw upon - theoretically they should pull ahead as time progresses.

On the other hand you have Chinese players retiring because of restrictions placed on them

Dota 2 just started open beta in China last month (chinese aren't allowed to have an international Dota 2 account). Basically the growth of Dota 2 in China is severely restricted by Valve/Perfect World's actions. Thats the biggest thing hurting Dota 2, not WC3 Dota, its largely the same game. Meanwhile, LOL is growing rapidly...
