LCS players can't do that because there's only one game in town. There's only one game in town if you want to play League of Legends because League of Legends is one game. I don't really see your point here @_@ If you wan't to make your living by playing League of Legends, I see nothing unreasonable with adhering to the rules set by the company that makes League of Legends, however unreasonable you may think they are. I guess it just feels weird to me that Riot can make up rules that everyone has to obey because there's literally no other way to be a LoL professional player than to play in the LCS. And while the same is true of baseball or any other sport, I feel like it's more weird here because I can't tell whether anyone is looking out for the players, or even if it would matter if they did.

YOu think they can drink a pepsi on TV? There is nothing that really makes LoL a direct competitor to DotA (or Hearthstone, etc.), which is the problem I have with this whole debacle. You can buy your Popstar Ahri skin AND your Cat Drow Ranger gear and a booster pack in Hearthstone. One does not preclude getting the other one. Riot is being anti-competitive in an industry that is not directly competitive. As a fan of LoL and other games, it is harder to support LoL when they are taking an aggressive stance and trying to push out other games that I also enjoy. are you trying to make "direct competitor" into a term like tanks and melee carries? because all i see in this post is you giving words your own personal definition that others are certain to disagree with.

Regi, HSGG, Evil Geniuses, Curse, Dignitas, Fnatic, are all huge organizations that all now have dedicated CEO Figures. They obviously said "this wont hurt our streaming numbers" so thats that.

Pro players are free to play whatever games they want – we’re simply asking them to keep in mind that, on-stream, they’re the face of competitive League of Legends.

I get why they don't want League players playing Dota 2 or even SC2 on stream as those games are Riot's direct competition, since that'd be like an athlete sponsored by Coke drinking Pepsi on TV, but preventing them from playing stuff like Hearthstone, which doesn't compete with Riot's niche at all is just strange. As far as I know, the NFL or NBA doesn't prevent its players from playing soccer or baseball for non-professionally.

In fact, there are only maybe 1-2 games on the list that could be considered "Pepsi" to LoL's "Coke".

True, but their interests are clearly aligned on this one issue, so it is not a problem. If we were talking about salary negotiation, revenue splits, etc, that is a place where Team interests would not match up with player interests. However, both want to maximize stream numbers while maximizing team LCS success.

Namely injury prevention because injured athletes cannot play the sport they're being paid large sums of money to play and that tends to be frowned upon. It's also not what's going on here. Riot's statement clearly indicates that the choice is an intentional one for control and image purposes. It's certainly within their legal prerogatives, and is fairly standard within modern business circles. It's also a significantly anti-community move and one whose negative implications they clearly have not really considered or simply do not understand.

Magus addresses the issue really obliquely. I guess this: Pro players are free to play whatever games they want – we’re simply asking them to keep in mind that, on-stream, they’re the face of competitive League of Legends. is a simple reiteration of what the contract says; you may play other games, but you can't stream those we view as competing with us, or those that belong to companies we view as competitors.

The non-compete/image perspective makes perfect sense to me (Coke/Pepsi analogy). However, many of the games on the list just don't make sense, like Hearthstone or the console games.
